ASP.NET 4 24-Hour Trainer (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThere are no easy roads for those wanting to get up to speed on new technologies. Many books and websites promise instant gratification, or instant knowledge, via some "easy way." "Stay young with seal fat soap! No effort required!" Or "Learn through osmosis! No thinking required! Just vegetate and let the knowledge seep in like jellyfish slime!" The electromagnetic spectrum bursts with such promises and audacious claims. So who can blame anyone who becomes skeptical at the subtitle "24-hour trainer?" And it doesn't refer to making gelatin spitballs, but to learning ASP.NET. So does the skepticism hold? Can the clueless and nescient learn this complex technology in a mere 24 hours by using this book?
Well, yes and no. Despite Wrox's new rock star theme, this book will only get you so far. And where exactly the 24-hour time frame comes in remains a little mysterious. Nonetheless, the book has plenty of value and will teach anyone quite a bit as long as expectations stay clear. For starters, this book, and accompanying DVD, emphasize process over fundamentals. Each chapter comprises a defined task. For example, the chapter "Master Pages in Web Forms" covers just that and not in great detail. Given this approach, beginners may sometimes find themselves wondering what just happened. Those with some experience or knowledge will probably benefit more.
The book sticks to a pattern. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the topic and ends with a "try it" section that steps through a specific task. Unfortunately, the introductory material often provides a glimpse of the technology. For instance the web.config file receives a lot of attention in this book, but nowhere does the book delineate the file's purpose in any detail. As an introduction this approach works great to a point. But as a way to means to solidify a foundation or to obtain a thorough understanding of the concepts in general it often falls flat. Still, for those who learn best by process, this book could work wonders. And it could serve as a great supplement to more detailed reading. Give it a prolonged glance to see if it works before buying.
The book also doesn't reveal everything in its title. Apart from ASP.NET, the book also covers the relatively new MVC (Model, View, Controller) framework. Those who don't possess the fundamentals may get lost quickly. MVC represents a fairly significant departure from the standard ASP model and the book's cursory introduction to the concepts may not suit everyone. Plus, most of the chapters have "A" and "A" sections that alternate between ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC. For example, Lesson 19A, "Displaying Data in Web Forms" flows into Lesson 19B, "Displaying Data in MVC." For some, this may just be too much at once. MVC could probably stand a "training" book of its own with a more detailed introduction to its core concepts. jQuery and AJAX also appear in a later chapter and though readers will get waked through some examples of how to use them, the core concepts again receive only a speck of detail. The W3C tutorials may fill in some of the gaps for beginners.
Still, the book has value. Those needing a refresh in the "how to" and not on the fundamentals may find this the perfect resource. Or someone looking for just a taste of ASP without committing to learning the core concepts may also find this a perfect page flapper. More experienced programmers may walk away from this book and be able to start cranking out (simple) websites. Beginners, at least not all of them, may not be so lucky. Absolute beginners may need to find other resources to really understand the construction of a real world ASP.NET application. And no matter how one uses the book it will very likely involve far more than 24 hours of interaction. Visual Basic 2008 For Dummies ReviewWhile a decent Dummies book in essence, the problem lies in it's target. The main focus on the book is VB 2008 Professional Edition. I find it hard to think of a common situation where a user would have full access to VB'08 PE, a $650 package at least, and be on a "dummies" level. For a user to have a need of this book, they would normally be on an entry level. Most entry level user's would be using VB'08 Express. There are a lot of features he highlights that are not available in this edition. This makes this book of little use for a lot of the "dummies" demographic.
It does have a lot of useful information in it. With some trial and error and copious use of the Help files, you can adapt this book to the VB Express edition. I have to give it 2 stars for that. I wish I had found another resource instead to waste my money on.Visual Basic 2008 For Dummies Overview

Live Hacking: The Ultimate Guide to Hacking Techniques & Countermeasures for Ethical Hackers & IT Security Experts ReviewIt is clear that English is not the first language of the author, so some of the writing is in the idiom and grammar of his first language. It could have profited from an English editor, but the level of writing does not take any of the value from the book. I think we are all used to working with talented people who express themselves more fluently in another language, but that doesn't prevent us from appreciating the value of their work.
Here the work is an excellent and perspicacious primer at the script kiddie level for those new to hacking, but with a solid background in application and system architecture. It is an eye opener for those not otherwise engaged in security, and an entree to those interested in moving into penetration and security testing.
There are a good deal of references to outside utilities to start to build one's toolkit for all sorts of nefarious activities. There is little if any tutorial on how to use any of the tools, or how to glean the significance of the data being presented by the tool, but if the reader has the proper background, there will be a lot of forehead smacking when you see what these tools can reveal and exploit when used properly.

Big Java ReviewWhen I bought this book, I was unaware that it was written with the intention of being a class textbook for learning not just Java, but also the basics of computer science. Even so, this is an excellent Java book that will serve the reader well.
First, this book is extremely well organized. The table of contents lays out the biggest points of each chapter without cluttering. In turn, each chapter has its own table of contents, outlining more minor points. Things that relate directly to Java and the targeted course are outlined in black, while other topics such as coding suggestions, historical notes and bits of trivia are outlined in blue. This makes navigation through the book very easy and straightforward.
As any textbook has, this one has plenty of practice exercises. These exercises are very relevant to the topics covered and offer the reader some practice. If you buy this book and are turned off by the idea of doing a bunch of exercises, well, don't do them. Then again, practice does make perfect...
Many people like Java books that plunge right into graphics programming. I don't. This book does cover basic graphics and applet programming fairly early on (chapter 4), and that is not much to my personal preference. But, it's relevant in relation to the information in surrounding chapters.
The book even comes with a style guide, which is very nice when you would like some idea of coding standards. Perhaps you will adopt the author's suggestions, perhaps not. Either way, it's an excellent place to start.
This book covers some advanced topics, including XML, JSP, servlets, and relational database interfacing. The coverage is clear and occurs later in the book after the building blocks are out of the way.
There are some errors in the book. HOWEVER, there is an errata page, at the author's web site, that addresses the problems and gives very clear corrections. Most programming books seem to have errors in them, and this one is no exception. The fact that there is a very easily accessible path to get the updates (at no extra cost) is a big plus.
Before I got this book, I was using "Thinking in Java" (Eckel) as my primary book for learning Java. Big Java has taken TIJ's place. Big Java ReviewFirst, this is unmistakably a book for entry-level programmers. The experienced might find other books more useful -- this one starts with basic principles.
That said, I still found it useful enough to keep my copy after I was through with the course that required it.
The writing is very clear, with numerous examples. Concepts from variables to multithreading are generally explained in an easy-to-follow manner. The book is nicely laid out and well-indexed, too, and the combination of traits makes it a good quick-reference tool for a refresher.
It is, however, lacking in depth of technical detail. This makes it easily accessible to new programmers, but experienced ones will want to have other references handy.

Sams Teach Yourself Java 6 in 21 Days (5th Edition) ReviewHaving had incredible success from The Visual Basic edition of this same title line, I was optimistic about this book. I was quite intimidated by Java but this book has not disappointed me in terms of making me interested and making it easy to learn.
However, I am only now finished with chapter 2 and have found an overwhelming amount of errors in quantity and severity. There are errors in the definitions of primitive types, there is a total mess in one of the code samples... one sample has several lines of code completely reversed, while the comments inserted are the same for one section of code as they are for another section performing the exact inverse calculations! It is an utter mess.
I really hope these errors are cleaned up in the next edition of the book. I've already written to the author, and I'll either want a written guarantee for a free copy of the next edition, or I'm returning the book.
My fear is that as I progress, I will encounter errors that I'm not sharp enough in the language to catch, and will end up with confusion, frustration and time wasted.
So, from what I can tell so far, the book's technique seems like it will be very successful in teaching me the basics of the language, but if the quantity and severity of errors persist as I've seen thus far, I'd have to say that there's got to be a better alternative.

I spent 20 years working for investment banks starting as a runner on the floor and retiring as the head of a trading desk. "What," I asked, "does this book have to teach me?"
Ah, beware of hubris! I was pleasantly surprised at what I learned. The book has a good introduction to how to obtain the sorts of information that a real day trader will need, but is best on the emotional. Emotions are almost always overlooked. I've seen lots of bright people rise to a certain point on a trading desk and then just implode because they couldn't handle the stress. And these were people working with other's money. It is even worse when it's your own dough on the line. The guy who practices day trading until he has his system all ready and then blows out a month after going live is very common.
Early in my career I started my own firm. This was before day trading was even technically possible and the firm was in the options pits. I got on the emotional roller coaster: on good days it was "Come on Honey, its steak dinner time!" On bad days I tried to save money by rationing toothpaste. It all ended in tears.
This is all by way of stressing the role emotions play in successfully trading the market. This book discusses strategies actually employed by some of the best traders on Wall Street and the book is worth looking into for that alone.

Java Servlet Programming Bible (With CD-ROM) ReviewAfter reading Marty Hall's Core Servlets and JSP and O'Reilly's Java Servlet Programming 2ED, I think this book does a better job of teaching and explaining the concepts and examples as they pertain to servlets in a clear and concise manner. Hall's and O'Reilly's books are good after you read this one first since they are more in-depth. I've been looking for a book that clearly explains Applet-to-Servlet communications. I've finally found a book that explains Applet-to-Servlet communications far better than the other 2 books, or any other books for that matter.
Marty Hall's examples are too scattered. For instance, you'll be on one page, but it will reference code from a totally different chapter-the layout of such examples are too annoying for me. Most of O'Reilly's examples are not explained very well and needlessly complicated (like most O'Reilly's books), but its examples are comprehensive. Both books over-use multiple classes or user-created packages when explaining a concept. I'd suggest using just one or 2 classes to explain a concept, as this book has done, which has reduced code clutter spanning multiple pages. This may go against "proper" OOP, but who cares as long as the point is made. If you have read any books published by Murach, then you'll know what I'm talking about. Too bad Murach don't publish a book on servlets! Don't get me wrong, Hall's and O'Reilly's books are good for in-depth coverage, just wished I had read Java Servlet Bible prior to reading the others.
Anyways, Java Servlet Bible isn't comprehensive and in-depth as it should NOT be in one book. The title is just marketing-if you feel tricked, look at that 545-page book again. But, it does a good job of covering the basics. It explains Servlets at their core and other APIs that servlets often use (JDBC) and useful programming paradigms (MVC architecture). It even threw in a brief intro to JSP to illustrate how to create dynamic web pages.
BOTTOM LINE: This is an excellent book to understand, learn, and get startly quickly with servlets. Read the other books afterwards for more comprehensive and in-depth coverage.
PROS: easy to follow, examples are clear and concise. Best of all, it doesn't try to teach you XML-related technologies like several other books : ) .

ASP.NET MVC Framework Unleashed ReviewDisclosure: I do not own this book, but the review is based on reading the first 4 chapters from my Safari subscription.
This book is a really, really great starting point for learning ASP .NET MVC. An important caveat is that you need to do the NERD DINNER tutorial first before ANYTHING! I'm real particular about my learning style and had baulked at the mere 10 reviews the book had received, but really, don't let that dissuade. This is a great book and the author breaks things down into easy to understand chunks. I will say that he isn't as detailed as the Nerddinner tutorial in explaining the Visual Studio features for adding Views & Controllers, but the description's for doing so should suffice.
Some people may not like that the code examples are in both C# & VB .NET; however, I don't mind this. It certainly adds to the size of the book, but I haven't found many books going through this stuff and showing VB .NET code, so that can only be a plus. Another gotcha is the book uses the Entity Framework for data access. I don't mind this since I haven't had exposure to it, but I think that might turn off some people. To be perfectly honest, I don't think there's a book that explains the basics of ASP .NET MVC in conjunction with NHibernate or ORM's outside of LINQ to SQL or Entity Framework. I did look at ASP.Net MVC in Action on Safari and I can tell you that it is definitely not a starter book; however, if you want exposure to using third party frameworks with ASP .NET MVC, that might be your book.
Okay after making to about chapter 19, I've come back to this review and bumped it down to 4 stars. My main bother here is that there isn't a published errata and their needs to be one. Thankfully, this doesn't come into play until Chapter's 17 & 19. The mistake made in both chapters is they start using classes without A) defining the code for the class b) without mentioning the class anywhere outside of a code example that assumes their prior creation C) a & b.
This isn't a huge deal, just download the book code and know that you will have to copy the code for the following classes:
UnleashedBlog.Models.BlogEntry (Chapter 17)
UnleashedBlog.Models.BlogServiceBase (Chapter 19)
UnleashedBlog.Tests.Factories.ControllerFactory (Chapter 19)
The last 2 really ticked me off because there is absolutely zero mention of their creation until they are magically used in code. Despite this, they aren't complicated classes and you can still understand what they are doing without the book having to elaborate.
Despite it all, I still recommend this book. Beginning Programming For Dummies ReviewYes, the humor and drawings can be corny and silly but overall this book is at least as good as Greg Perry's 'Teach yourself programming in 24 hours' (SAMS, 1998). As well as giving a solid grounding in venerable old QBASIC (hopefully then the reader can try their hand at VB, VBA, VbScript), Wallace's book presents bits of Java, Pascal, C/CC+ presented throughtout, and lots of useful websites. Beginning Drupal 7 ReviewI was very happy with this book and highly recommend it to anyone needing to get started with Drupal. Even if you have little or no experience with developing websites or other CMS packages, this book will give you a great start. It was a very quick read with lots of visuals and illustrations, and included ample information to get you on the fast track to developing websites using Drupal. The book covers everything a novice needs to know to get started, and presents it in a very organized fashion. It was a real "page turner" for me.
I've been developing desktop database applications for 15+ years (as a full-time IT Manager, and as a night/weekend consultant), but have been doing more work with websites in recent years. I have developed a few simple websites, and my first CMS experience was with Joomla. But after trying WordPress, I quickly converted the site I had in Joomla over to WordPress, and all web development since has been with WordPress.
The manufacturing company I work for full-time is in the process of developing a new corporate website. After looking at many expensive enterprise-level CMS packages (SiteCore, Kentico, etc..) we decided to go open source, primarily because of the lower hosting costs and we wanted to own 100% of the source code to our new website. After many hours of researching options, we decided to use Drupal as our base. Since my CMS experience has been primarily with WordPress, I needed a book to learn the basics of Drupal, and to help reinforce our decision to use Drupal before we started the development of the website.
This book will help me as I manage the developer(s) who will be developing our new website, and I look forward to reading "Foundation Drupal 7" and "Pro Drupal" next!

I have a collection of books and tutorials and, WITHOUT FAIL, each and every one of them ends somewhere with some sort of mistake in code that I've never been able to get over (including the first book by Hartl, by the way). As I am a functioning idiot, this is no mean feat. It is quite an accomplishment. Not by me, but by the author.

CSS Web Design For Dummies ReviewI generally turn to "Dummies" books when I have no knowledge of a subject, but need quick information. I like the books... Unlike most techies, I like the humor contained within. One thing about techno-dummie books is that they generally give you just enough information to get up and running... They're great starting points. However, you will not learn standarized methods, as proposed by the W3C, from this book. You'll learn about selectors, but things like the box model are not really explained as well as they should be.
THIS BOOK IS GEARED TOWARDS IE BROWSERS ONLY - as the author states several times throughout. In regards to marketing, MS owning 90% market share, it makes sense to teach from this angle. But to learn the full potential of the language I can't see the justification. Firefox, Opera, and Safari, already support alot of selctors from CSS Level 3, leaving the IE viewers a degraded or dimished view of pages created to standard. It's possible that IE may take advantage of these things in the future, hopefully, and you won't learn what CSS truly has to offer in the dummies books.
I would definitely recommend looking at WROX CSS books such as "Professional CSS..." and "Accessible XHTML and CSS Web Sites Problem Design Solution" after reading this book. Other good books would be Jeremy Keith's "DOM Scripting...", which is geared towards CSS guys, and Dan Cederhom's "Bulletproof Web Design..."
That being said, the Dummies book, in my opinion is the easiest starting point... just be prepared to do more reading.... lots more.CSS Web Design For Dummies Overview

Let's just say that I am very impressed. I know HTML and JavaScript, so this book is a refresher on the code I already know. Yet with HTML5 there are definitely some new things to learn.
NimbleKit is used within Apple's own Xcode programming software. Yes, you read that correctly.
What do I like about this book? It discusses everything from starting to program an application using NimbleKit to submitting it to the Apple iTunes App Store. Since purchasing this book I have created an application for a music group (being released in early March), and I am planning on releasing a lot of educational software in the near future. Since I am going to be a high school History teacher next year I have a lot of apps that I would like to make for my future students (and anyone else that appreciates educational apps).

RESTful PHP Web Services ReviewThe book is a good introduction to PHP web services, cURL and DOM. It goes into details of building a web service from scratch. That is good for understanding, but I would much rather use a framework from WSO2 or Zend.
Book has a lot of examples. Though the examples have a few problems
1. Very basic sample programs for RESTful server.
2. A lot of code is printed, but with very little explanation.
3. Code explanation does not offer more than what you would get by reading the code itself. No options or pitfalls are described.
4. Printed code formatting is awful. Statements wrap around, instead of line breaks and indentation. Random words are highlighted. Bold words have no connection to the concept being explained. For example, frequently (but not always) functions have plain "return;" highlighted.
All that makes the book hard to read.
Before buying the book, check websites for WSO2, Zend, Flickr and Yahoo. They have good documentation and tutorials.
RESTful PHP Web Services OverviewLearn the basic architectural concepts and step through examples of consuming and creating RESTful web services in PHP. Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform (Pragmatic Programmers) ReviewI've read several books on Android from cover to cover, and skimmed several others, and "Hello, Android" is hands-down the best introduction to Android development.
Here's why I say that --
You really can get through the book in a day or two. The explanations are clear, the topics focus on what's relevant to getting started in Android development, and when you're done you have the skills to dive into the SDK to continue learning.
There is a consistent example project that is developed throughout the book. I found this very helpful, because it showed me how all the different parts fit together. For example, launching activities from an existing activity, using multiple classes in your project, adding preferences, etc.
There are very few (if any) "gotchas" in this book. I followed the examples step by step without any problem. I think some people have used the book's online forum to ask about which packages to import, but when I used Eclipse it was done automatically for me. (By the way, all the files are also online.)
Even after having many months of Android development under my belt, I find that I still refer back to this book from time to time. That's saying something for a book that sets out to be an introduction.
Remember, this book is a great introduction. If you already know Android and are looking for a deep-dive, look elsewhere. But if you are curious about all the excitement around Android and have a few hours to spare, spend them with this book and find out what developing in Android is all about.Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform (Pragmatic Programmers) Overview
