Visual Basic 2008 For Dummies ReviewWhile a decent Dummies book in essence, the problem lies in it's target. The main focus on the book is VB 2008 Professional Edition. I find it hard to think of a common situation where a user would have full access to VB'08 PE, a $650 package at least, and be on a "dummies" level. For a user to have a need of this book, they would normally be on an entry level. Most entry level user's would be using VB'08 Express. There are a lot of features he highlights that are not available in this edition. This makes this book of little use for a lot of the "dummies" demographic.
It does have a lot of useful information in it. With some trial and error and copious use of the Help files, you can adapt this book to the VB Express edition. I have to give it 2 stars for that. I wish I had found another resource instead to waste my money on.Visual Basic 2008 For Dummies Overview

Spring Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach ReviewI used this book as a quick reference to Spring 2.5 for use on a recent JSF project, and was thrilled at how easy it was to find exactly the information that I was looking for.
With JSF and the application context being my focus, I only read about a third of the book (chapters 1 through 4, 10 and 11).
These chapters detailed exactly what I needed to do to get Spring 2.x up and running with JSF, including how to use it instead of the JSF managed bean creation facility, and how to unlock the request/session scopes.
The chapter on the advanced features of the Spring container is particularly interesting as it clearly portrays the number of ways Spring can instantiate a bean (viz., using a constructor, a static factory method, an instance factory method, from a static field, from an object property, or a factory bean.) Also noteworthy are the Java equivalents that are provided for each of these instantiation methods, making understanding the differences a no-brainer.
There's also a wealth of information on multiple approaches to achieving the same goal (e.g., injecting references using the ref element, using ref attribute of a property element, or using the p schema), with clear indications as to why one might be preferable over the others.
Really stretching for a con here - the recipe approach felt a bit contrived and unnecessary. However, the quality of the writing is beyond reproach, and more than made up for any discomfort I had with the topic structure.Spring Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach Overview

This book opens up a lot of new possibilities for web development on the client side. Beginning J2ME Platform: From Novice to Professional ReviewJ2ME is a jungle of configurations, profiles, and APIs. A beginner's book might soar over the jungle like an exotic bird, pretty but insubstantial. Such a book would see everything from a 20,000 foot view. You'd see the lay of the land, but wouldn't get your feet wet.
Another approach would be for the authors to grab their machetes and start hacking their way in, following a particular path. You'd get all dirty and sweaty and get a lot of experience, but not necessarily understand exactly how you got there.
This book decidedly takes this latter path. After a brief introductory chapter, it concentrates on the core APIs and the most commonly implemented configuration and device profile. Although there's plenty of practical information on tools and lots of code examples, as a reader unfamiliar with J2ME, and someone who doesn't own a Java-enabled phone, I felt disoriented. As an introduction to J2ME programming, I felt the book was lacking in background and motivations.
Striking a balance between the two approaches I described might be a fool's errand. Therefore you would probably need one book from each category to really get involved in J2ME development.Beginning J2ME Platform: From Novice to Professional OverviewJ2ME is a platform for wireless and mobile Java application development. Beginning J2ME makes this and all the fun you can have with it accessible to the first time wireless Java developer as well as useful to the experienced. This book includes coverage such as sound HTTPS support, lots of user interface API enhancements, a Game API, sound/music API, 3D graphics, Bluetooth, and much more. It's easy to read with lots of practical hands-on and able to use code examples.
