Professional Twitter Development: With Examples in .NET 3.5 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI must admit that Twitter is a subject that intrigues me, just like all of these social service media do. But this book is more than just about Twitter; it's also about Twitter's architecture and the use of REST-based applications and services that can be exposed through other means than just twitter (WCF, for example). It's about making web requests and responses using HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse. It's about Oath authentication requests which are utilized by Google and other services. So the concepts you will learn in this book go beyond twitter.
Content
The book is packed with a lot of content about the services Twitter offers. It's clear that Daniel has a lot of knowledge on the subject. He packs the book with API references, code he's written to simplify and make requests from Twitter, and other important information.
The book's chapters are laid out relatively well. The chapters do flow in a relative order that works, moving from overview, to API references, to working with the raw data and the various API's, and finally ending up with the advanced topics of performance, functionality, data push/pull, and cross platform applications.
I find a lot of value in the service references in the book. This makes a great reference to refer back to when using the Twitter service. The book also has a wonderful reference of error codes that twitter uses to return to the caller, as it isn't straightforward to typical HTTP requests. The information on OAuth, as it is a pain to get setup correctly, is priceless too.
The book also covers the type of information (the properties within each object) that may be returned from a given object. Some of these properties change depending on the type of data being queried. For instance, date formats change depending on the API you are using, and so you have to be careful and handle this appropriately.
At the end, he also includes information about the custom API he wrote for Twitter (making Twitter more simple to use). His API is pretty fluent and easy to use, and has much online support (google TweetSharp for more information).
I think the book could use a few more .NET examples to reinforce the lessons learned. For instance, after all the API references, it would have been helpful to have another .NET code example of how to use one of the API methods, just to reinforce the chapter's content.
Writing Style
Daniel is very knowledgeable about the subject, and you can tell from his writing. One of his strengths is his ability to lay out a solution to the challenges of Twitter. If you don't like to work with the low-level details in Twitter, you may have a hard time following the book; that is the kind of book this is, after all, because that is simply how Twitter works.
I feel that some times, the book tells you how to solve a problem, and not properly explain what the problem is. This isn't always the case, but certain areas of the book left me wondering why, instead of just getting code to resolve the problem.
Conclusion
Great book, worth the read, but know what you are getting into. This book gets into the detailed aspects you need to be aware of, which is those low-level error code, OAuth authentication, web requests and processing XML/JSON data, etc.Professional Twitter Development: With Examples in .NET 3.5 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Overview

REST in Practice: Hypermedia and Systems Architecture ReviewI started my REST journey with the two popular O'Reilly books ("RESTful Web Services" and "RESTful Web Services Cookbook") but found that they started a little too deep into the technical details and were missing the view from 30,000 feet. Sure, I learned stuff in those books about content type negotiation, the semantics of HTTP verbs and whatnot, but I was missing a really compelling answer to the question, "Why should I choose REST for my application architecture?".
At the same time I was reading about REST online and kept seeing lots of references to a mythical, magical thing called "Hypermedia As The Engine Of Application State" (HATEOAS) which lots of bloggers were effusive about but none of them could articulate very well. I was intrigued, but I wasn't convinced.
Luckily a colleague of mine mentioned this book to me and said it answered all of my questions, and he was right. Within a couple of chapters, it was obvious that the authors had made a real effort to explain not just what REST is but *why* it represents a significant shift in architectural thinking in software design. I quickly learned what REST really is and what it isn't. Most importantly I learned how it can be leveraged to build distributed systems that don't suffer from so many of the problems found with "classic" middleware technologies and architectures based on things like CORBA, DCOM, RPC, and so on.
After reading this book I returned to those two O'Reilly books and found they were much easier to follow and made far more sense. Having the architectural basis and benefits of REST explained properly by "REST in Practice" really accelerated my learning while reading those other books (which rely much more on code snippets and HTTP payload discussions rather than the underlying concepts).
If you're tasked with building a REST system or would like to figure out if REST is an appropriate approach for your designs, then this book is for you. If you're a script kiddie who just wants to learn how to write another Twitter client for the iPhone, this book may be overkill.
Building a RESTful system is much harder to do than simply consuming one that already exists. Designing a simple, usable RESTful system that properly follows the HATEOAS principle and remains easy for clients to consume is no small task either -- but this book helps immensely in that regard.
For making an architectural topic that is so poorly described elsewhere so tremendously easy to understand, this book easily gets five stars.REST in Practice: Hypermedia and Systems Architecture Overview

Sun Web Server: The Essential Guide ReviewI read a lot of technical books about a lot of topics, but I read very few of them cover-to-cover. I did that with Sun Web Server, the Essential Guide. It's an easy read about a complex hunk of software. It goes into great depth, but is still understandable and practical.
Granted, I've worked with Sun Web Server and its predecessors for more than a decade as well as its competitors, so I have a vested interest in the topic. But this book clearly explained a lot that isn't evident in the user documentation. The book also benefits by the web server software itself, which seems to have improved significantly in this version.
The only negatives I have are that some chunks of text seem repetitive. I suspect that's so the chapters can stand alone. But if you read it from front to back, there are a couple 'didn't-you-already-say-that' moments.

Web 2.0 and Social Networking for the Enterprise: Guidelines and Examples for Implementation and Management Within Your Organization Review"Web 2.0 and Social Networking for the Enterprise" is an overview of IBM products for the social networking. (See my review of "The Social Factor" for a better, less IBM specific take on the world while still being written by IBMers.) I also had a "this book is in search of an audience" moment at the beginning. It assumes you haven't heard of AJAX and then goes on to show long detailed code.
As far as product overview, I think the book does well. It covers different IBM offerings (portlets, connections, quickr, etc.) There are many screenshots and the book talks about what each one is good for. There are some tips throughout, but I felt they got buried in the "how to use the tools" descriptions.
If you are working an a shop using IBM social networking products, this is a good guide to them all. My low rating is because I didn't get that's what it would be about from the title or subtite. I expected it to cover more "guidelines and examples for implementation and management within your organization." I feel "The Social Factor" does that in a less product centric way.

Practical REST on Rails 2 Projects (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewIn a nutshell this book can be broken into 3 parts:
1) About REST - 19 pages
2) Rails support for REST - 18 pages
3) Tutorials - All the other pages
I found the first 37 pages or so pretty interesting. The tutorials I'm sure have a lot of good examples, but personally I find that not the most fascinating format to read. If I have to scroll more than a few pages in a tutorial in a blog I might lose interest. That's just me.
The tutorials provide examples of how to include the ideas of REST using JavaScript, JSON, PHP, iPhone, Facebook, etc. Glance over the sections at a bookstore, if it looks like something pertinent to a project you are working on ... then buy it.
So overall, it does an OK job of presenting the material in the chosen format (tutorials). It's just not my personal favorite as far as written formats go.Practical REST on Rails 2 Projects (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewPractical REST on Rails 2 Projects by Ben Scofield is a practical projects oriented tour of extending the world's most popular open source Web framework into Web Services and Enterprise applications using REST. A great definition of the term 'REST" can be found at http://tomayko.com/articles/2004/12/12/rest-to-my-wife.This will be the first and likely only book on REST on Rails.It includes high profile practical case study projects on developing an application for the iPhone as well as Facebook and more.

Apache Axis2 Web Services, 2nd Edition ReviewIt is most surprising to see a PACKT book that simply could not have been proof read. Apart from many sentences actually making no sense there is so much bad English that you are not sure whether the authors are talking in technical terms or figuratively, for example "However, at the transport (transport sender), we have blocking behaviour" - is the author talking about the transport layer, or the server or sender? It is however, the lack of coherency across the topics, makes me think the authors had some source code and listings that they hacked into the sections of a document and then tried to document the code to form a book. The result is that there is very little flow in and between the sections that have source code, indeed if you don't have the actual source code listing, you would never be able to piece this together! Unfortunately not all the source code is available either, so sometimes you are stuck with the snippets that lie within the book. For example, even though Chapter 9 talks about the use of Asynchronous services, and provides codes snippets, there in chapter 14, there is almost identical code snippets used with no reference to the earlier chapter, hence you are left wondering (especially as the actual source code is missing from the download!)as to what the purpose of the new section is or whether it was just poor editing.
Paradoxically, where the book reads well, say in the early sections and the area on ESB Integration there is no source code at all, so after having spent a great deal of time explaining how the various open source ESB works, e.g. Synapse there is not a single piece of code to shown how all the other snippets could come together to re-enforce the importance of this integration technology.
To give due credit, of the code sections that were available for download, and those that I tried, relating to asynchronous services, did work and were educational - albeit more from looking at the application code than as a result of reading the book. And this comes to my point - a book like this only makes sense to purchase, if the code is well documented and is put together with the narrative in a coherent way. For example, I don't need to buy a book like this to learn about architecture Axis2, there is heaps of material on the net, the purpose of the book should be to show you how to apply it, and sadly with respect to this, it does not do a good job simply because it is so utterly and badly written.
Let me leave you with one gem from chapter 14. "We do not need to worry about the source code, because in real life, we are not going to use the following code to start Axis2". Well maybe so, but a single sentence on why we therefore need this extra bit of code would be illuminating!
If you after after better book on this subject infinitely better written, then you should look at Developing Web Services with Apache Axis2 byKent Ka Iok Tong.

I was quite disappointed in this book, which is both repetitive, drawn-out and shallow in its coverage of web services. Although the book covers most aspects of web service development using JWSDP, as a result almost nothing is covered in great detail, and the book's 700+ pages ultimately provide a dreary drawn-out overview of web services better found elsewhere.
I am now using Apache Axis to create web services, trying to figure out how to create stateful web services. Axis is barely covered by the book, and I cannot find any mention of how to implement stateful web services. Web Services: Principles and Technology ReviewThis book stands out from the vast array of contemporary SOA and Web services literature in many ways:
1) It presents business context and technical requirements for Web services design on an adequate level of detail.
2) It provides important historical insight without putting the reader to sleep.
3) It covers relevant related work such as e-business, EAI, and networking as needed, unlike most other Web services books.
4) It separates abstract concepts such as messaging from implementation technology such as JMS appropriately, but shows the connections when needed.
5) It builds up a non-trivial example that demonstrates how the various specifications fit together, many unique illustrations help to digest.
6) It has non-trivial exercises that will deepen your understanding.
7) The author's has a hype-free, vendor-neutral writing style and is very experienced in his field.
It always is a good sign if as a reader I want more... so I would also have been interested in the author's view on the ongoing WS-*/SOAP vs. REST debate, and about adoption of the presented concepts and technologies in the industry (tools and project usage); for example, UDDI does not seem to have much traction these days. Maybe something for the Website accompanying the book, which will also have additional material for students and lecturers?
As a practicing IT architect, I have helped many companies to transform their existing applications into Web services-based SOAs. As a book author, I have captured my own experience with the technology in writing. As a researcher, I now investigate many of the architecture design issues the author points out. Still, I find this book to be very educational and informative; I highly recommend it for practitioners, students, and researchers that want to understand the big picture as well as technical rationale and details behind the various concepts and technologies. Those of you that believe some WSDL-to-Java wizards or RESTful POX/HTTP calls are all that is required for successful enterprise development and integration, please do have a look as well - you will begin to appreciate that there is more to the picture!Web Services: Principles and Technology OverviewThe first textbook to focus on Web Services – the wave of the future for Web-based distributed computing.

Java Soa Cookbook ReviewThis book is intended for experienced Java developers and architects who need to know the details of SOA development with the Java programming language and associated technologies. It is not a very good big picture book on SOA. For that I recommend Service Oriented Architecture with Java: Using SOA and web services to build powerful Java applications, which was published in 2008, so it is still current in its approach.
To get the most out of this book the author assumes specifically that you are familiar with Java SE 5 or 6, servlets, JSP Enterprise Edition containers such as Glassfish, Enterprise JavaBeans, as well as JDBC, JNDI, EARs and WARs, and XML. In short, the author assumes that you have been involved in enterprise development using the Java technologies and APIs mentioned. If you have used web services but not recently, this book does help you get your feet back in the water. It is those that are complete novices that will get truly lost.
Parts of the book address strategy, design, and patterns, but largely it is a book that stays at a low level. A really good book on SOA design patterns is SOA Design Patterns (The Prentice Hall Service-Oriented Computing Series from Thomas Erl). The author also talks about SOA and Ruby, Python, and .NET. However, it is not necessary to have a background in these languages since Java is specifically the language and environment that the author addresses.

SOA Using Java Web Services ReviewMark Hansen says SOA using Java Web Services is hard and he seems to do his best to prove it.
The author states in the Preface, "...it is inevitable that I will have disappointed some readers because a particular topic of interest to them isn't covered." For me, that wasn't the problem. The problem was there was not enough grounding in what I already know to give me enough lift to understand the text.
I couldn't really follow most of the book. Reading this book, my concentration collapsed under a borage of acronyms and complex notations. I don't think this book is for someone who is not already nearly an expert on the subject. Too many times I saw phrases like "my purpose is not to write a detailed tutorial for..." -- leaving me wondering what background information he would provide.
I cannot say this is a bad book. I can only say I didn't get much out of it and that most developers would be challenged themselves. I am not an expert in SOA or Web Services, but I have been a Java developer more than six years and a software engineer for more than 20.
Despite being a book about Java Web Services, there is really not very much Java in the book. It's mostly dense text with XML examples.

RESTful PHP Web Services ReviewThe book is a good introduction to PHP web services, cURL and DOM. It goes into details of building a web service from scratch. That is good for understanding, but I would much rather use a framework from WSO2 or Zend.
Book has a lot of examples. Though the examples have a few problems
1. Very basic sample programs for RESTful server.
2. A lot of code is printed, but with very little explanation.
3. Code explanation does not offer more than what you would get by reading the code itself. No options or pitfalls are described.
4. Printed code formatting is awful. Statements wrap around, instead of line breaks and indentation. Random words are highlighted. Bold words have no connection to the concept being explained. For example, frequently (but not always) functions have plain "return;" highlighted.
All that makes the book hard to read.
Before buying the book, check websites for WSO2, Zend, Flickr and Yahoo. They have good documentation and tutorials.
RESTful PHP Web Services OverviewLearn the basic architectural concepts and step through examples of consuming and creating RESTful web services in PHP. This book targets PHP developers who want to build or make use of RESTful web services, or explore the options available to them in PHP. You will need to know the basics of PHP development, but no knowledge of REST is assumed, nor any knowledge of creating web services generally.

(1) It has a gradual progression from concept to implementation that is both easy to read and very structured. It made the whole book very valuable. The initial section on REST is concise and either enlightening or revision, depending on what you already know. The transition to WCF programming is just as smooth.
(2) It zeroes in on the essentials and provides very lean tutorials on the meat of implementing RESTful services. This is key because WCF as a technology is fairly dense and sprawling. Flanders starts with a quick tutorial of non-SOAP based web programming using WCF. And he covers both server side API implementation and client side consumption of the same.
RESTful .NET's biggest strength is that it is concise, clear and lean. To that point, you need the basics of HTTP, SOAP, WCF, XML, C# and (briefly) ASP in place.RESTful .NET: Build and Consume RESTful Web Services with .NET 3.5 Overview

RESTful Web Services Cookbook: Solutions for Improving Scalability and Simplicity ReviewAs is common with O'Reilly's Cookbooks, the style of this book is very terse and to the point. There is not much handholding. The intended audience seems to be system architects who already know what they are doing, but who need to know what they should be aiming for when they want to be RESTful. The "recipes" in this Cookbook are more like Best Practices, since figuring out how to implement them is left as an excercise for the reader.
Compared to my previous readings on REST, this book strongly emphasizes the use of consistent XML formats. For me, this was the most important lesson in the book. It is not enough to just use PUT and DELETE: in order to really think in terms of "representations," you need to design meaningful XML. Along these lines, Allamaraju's discussion of the Atom protocol is particularly interesting.RESTful Web Services Cookbook: Solutions for Improving Scalability and Simplicity Overview

Designing Web Services with the J2EE 1.4 Platform: JAX-RPC, SOAP, and XML Technologies (Java Series) ReviewThis book is primarily geared towards reader at the architectural end of the spectrum. Code samples are few and far between, and the illustrations are primarily UML. That's not a bad thing, it's just a matter of what you are looking for. Though even for an architecture work I would like to see a little more code (thus the four stars instead of five.)
The book starts with XML basics, then spends the largest portion of the book on SOAP and JAX-RPC, then finishes off with an excellent chapter on security issues. There is some mention of mobile, but nothing in depth.
I recommend this book to Java architects who want to learn more about this topic. Applied SOAP: Implementing .NET XML Web Services ReviewHere's what you get in the book: you will learn how to use .NET in order to shape your SOAP messages. There's a lot to know and understand: manipulating XML, creating custom attributes, debugging, reading messages. This book covers all of those items in detail and has the code to save you time. The book tells me exactly what I needed to know in order to make better use of SOAP in my .NET applications. Kenn teaches this stuff for Wintellect and developed the course on this. It's also pretty clear that the day jobs for both these guys involves writing Web Services. When you are done with the book, you will understand all you need in order to write your own Web Services.
I read the two other reviews and I don't understand why the readers are complaining. SOAP is one way to do Web Services and is the only thing that the authors talk about in the entire book. Perhaps this reader has a problem with the fact that, for the most part, SOAP == Web Services? As for the horrible waste of time review, I again think that the person didn't really look at the book. This is the best book I have seen to date which describes how to mold your SOAP messages, write custom attributes, etc. These guys explain pretty well what SOAP is for. Better for Web Page scraping?
