The Church of Facebook: How the Hyperconnected Are Redefining Community ReviewI heard about Jesse Rice's book, "The Church of Facebook: How the Wireless Generation is Redefining Community" from an interview he did on a podcast. The topic of online community and whether or not it can be authentic is of interest to me.
I wasn't sure what to expect; perhaps a Christianized critique of the whole social networking phenomenon complete with a set of warnings for believers and suggested rules for underage children. Thankfully this is not Jesse's book. Instead it opens with a fascinating story of the opening day on the Millennium Bridge crossing the Thames River in London. The unexpected shaking that day on the pedestrian footbridge is similar to the online spectacle of Facebook and other social networking sites. Jesse uses this and several other stories at the beginning of each chapter to create a historical framework for interpreting our online interactions. Jesse has done his research well and the book is very interesting because of it.
The science of connecting with others, of creating a "home" where we feel safe is the subject of chapter one. This is followed by a chapter on revolutionary changes to society and how Facebook is set up to be, if it not already is, a world changer. Chapter three delves into the controls people have of their online presence, of the information they choose to share online with others on their profiles. He poses the question of what we will do with the power we have to create, to shape society, with our online influence. Chapter four studies the impact that all of the new information has on an individual, understanding that people have adapted their behavior with this new way to connect with people, share information and collect new data. The fifth chapter focuses on the question of community and whether or not it can be experienced online. Are our relational needs truly being met? The final chapter speaks to implications of using social networking and some of the inherent behaviors that could be attributed to living life via an online presence. Jesse suggests some boundaries to keep the experience healthy, balanced and authentic.
Although the book could be categorized as a Christian book by a Christian author, it doesn't come across as preachy or fear-based. As such I hope it will be picked up by readers interested in modern communication, community development, sociology, and human psychology. It broadened my perspectives of social networking and has stayed with me as I've continued connecting with old and new friends online. The Church of Facebook: How the Hyperconnected Are Redefining Community Overview

This timely release explores the community-altering phenomenon of social networking sites and what it reveals about friendship, God, and our own hearts.

With hundreds of millions of users, social networks are changing how we form relationships, perceive others, and shape our identity. Yet at its core, this movement reflects our need for community. Our longing for intimacy, connection, and a place to belong has never been a secret, but social networking offers us a new perspective on the way we engage our community. How do these networks impact our relationships? In what ways are they shaping the way we think of ourselves? And how might this phenomenon subtly reflect a God who longs to connect with each one of us?

The Church of Facebook explores these ideas and much more, offering a revealing look at the wildly popular world of online social networking.

Web 2.0 Heroes: Interviews with 20 Web 2.0 Influencers Reviewyou get what's on the cover; 20 interviews with Web 2.0 influencers. as with many interview books, some interviews are more/less appealing to the reader. what is crucial is that at least some should be worth reading and useful. to me, the book succeeds mostly. i found the following interviews particularly interesting; Alan Meckler (internet.com). a lot to learn from somebody who's been in the publishing business since 1969. as to expected from a veteran, he has some challanging statements like `99% of all Web 2.0 properties will never make a diem`. Gina Bianchi (ning.com) was another great interview which sparked lots of enthusiasm for the social network supported by numbers.
a good and solid read - unfortunately far from a must Web 2.0 bookWeb 2.0 Heroes: Interviews with 20 Web 2.0 Influencers OverviewWeb 2.0 may be an elusive concept, but one thing is certain: using the Web as merely a means of retrieving and displaying information is history. Today?s Web is immediate, interactive, innovative. It is user-controlled and community-driven. Organizations, marketers, application developers, and communicators must be ready to respond and to innovate or be left behind, and the experts featured on these pages are leading the charge. Their ideas are fresh, sometimes experimental, necessarily flexible, and always on the leading edge to prepare you for a Web where users rule.

Facebook API Developers Guide (Firstpress) ReviewAs far as I know, this was the first book released about Facebook development. So it comes as no surprise that it feels like it was written in a weekend. It's quite an accomplishment to make a book that's only 100 pages long feel padded, yet somehow the author manages to achieve this. For example, the bit of code that shows you how to set your API Key variable in the config.php file is repeated at least 3 times! The sample application that occupies the rear third of the book is extremely disappointing because it is just a plain old PHP app. It does not take advantage of the Facebook API.
I'm giving this book 2 stars in part because there is a dearth of Facebook development books. And there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the information provided here, it's just limited. As a primer it will be enough to get you started, but you'll be done with the book in a couple hours and hungering for more.Facebook API Developers Guide (Firstpress) OverviewFacebook is a huge social networking site with about 50 million members. In May 2007, Facebook announced that they were implementing the Facebook API: a programming interface that allows users to create their own Facebook applications and access Facebook data. This book takes readers through their first steps with the API, introducing all of the functionality they need to create larger applications.

Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms: The Guide to Establishing Credibility and Accelerating Relationships (Wiley Professional Advisory) ReviewMichelle Golden's book, "Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms" is incredibly valuable and worthwhile, right from the start. It may be the definitive book right now to use to understand what "social media" really means and then implement and apply it to your professional firm.
The book is written in a very conversational, informative style, which will be extremely helpful to those new to "social media," as well as those already actively using Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook and blogging for business purposes, who want to learn more and go to the next level.
The book is full of real examples, definitions and adaptable suggestions. It will help you to think about your "strategy" and how to implement social media into your business. The book is very well designed, so that it can either be read through, or used as a reference tool to learn more about a specific topic. Michelle clearly explains the rationale and issues regarding social media in general (which is outstanding), then provides the What, Why, and How to use each of these tools, as well as Tips for each. She has even included a very detailed footnote section, for those interested in further reading or support for her content, as well as a thorough Glossary.

This book will definitely be helpful to professional firms (both small and large, for a partner in charge or the social media "champion"), as well as anyone else who has an interest in applying social media for their business. This is an excellent book, which I highly recommend. Anyone who wants to learn more about this topic will find this a must-have book.
Disclosure: I have no relationship with the author of this book, other than being "connected" via Twitter.

Professional Twitter Development: With Examples in .NET 3.5 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI must admit that Twitter is a subject that intrigues me, just like all of these social service media do. But this book is more than just about Twitter; it's also about Twitter's architecture and the use of REST-based applications and services that can be exposed through other means than just twitter (WCF, for example). It's about making web requests and responses using HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse. It's about Oath authentication requests which are utilized by Google and other services. So the concepts you will learn in this book go beyond twitter.
Content
The book is packed with a lot of content about the services Twitter offers. It's clear that Daniel has a lot of knowledge on the subject. He packs the book with API references, code he's written to simplify and make requests from Twitter, and other important information.
The book's chapters are laid out relatively well. The chapters do flow in a relative order that works, moving from overview, to API references, to working with the raw data and the various API's, and finally ending up with the advanced topics of performance, functionality, data push/pull, and cross platform applications.
I find a lot of value in the service references in the book. This makes a great reference to refer back to when using the Twitter service. The book also has a wonderful reference of error codes that twitter uses to return to the caller, as it isn't straightforward to typical HTTP requests. The information on OAuth, as it is a pain to get setup correctly, is priceless too.
The book also covers the type of information (the properties within each object) that may be returned from a given object. Some of these properties change depending on the type of data being queried. For instance, date formats change depending on the API you are using, and so you have to be careful and handle this appropriately.
At the end, he also includes information about the custom API he wrote for Twitter (making Twitter more simple to use). His API is pretty fluent and easy to use, and has much online support (google TweetSharp for more information).
I think the book could use a few more .NET examples to reinforce the lessons learned. For instance, after all the API references, it would have been helpful to have another .NET code example of how to use one of the API methods, just to reinforce the chapter's content.
Writing Style
Daniel is very knowledgeable about the subject, and you can tell from his writing. One of his strengths is his ability to lay out a solution to the challenges of Twitter. If you don't like to work with the low-level details in Twitter, you may have a hard time following the book; that is the kind of book this is, after all, because that is simply how Twitter works.
I feel that some times, the book tells you how to solve a problem, and not properly explain what the problem is. This isn't always the case, but certain areas of the book left me wondering why, instead of just getting code to resolve the problem.
Conclusion
Great book, worth the read, but know what you are getting into. This book gets into the detailed aspects you need to be aware of, which is those low-level error code, OAuth authentication, web requests and processing XML/JSON data, etc.Professional Twitter Development: With Examples in .NET 3.5 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Overview
Twitter is rapidly moving up the social networking food chain and is currently outranked by only Facebook and MySpace. It features a programming API that allows you to build Web sites and applications (both desktop and mobile) for reading and posting to Twitter, finding other Twitter users, aggregating Twitter content, and other uses. This book walks you through the process of combining many programming tools in order to build exciting, useful, and profitable applications.

You'll begin with a look at RESTful services and examine how to structure your queries, handle asynchronous operations, use headers, and post binary data. From there, author and TweetSharp developer Daniel Crenna explains how to authenticate with the OAuth specification for Web and Windows applications.
Twitter is growing in popularity at a rapid pace and this book shows you how to take advantage of its programming API to build applications
Explains the various ways to design a Twitter application, including caching, third party application interoperability, real-time data binding, push vs. pull data scenarios, and more
Takes an in-depth look at TweetSharp, a .NET library for developing Twitter applications-whose creator is also the author of this book
Walks you through requesting and retrieving responses from Twitter's API
Warns you of considerations to take into account regarding authentication and security

Professional Twitter Development shows you how to get the most out of Twitter so that you can build your own applications for this exciting new platform.

Developer's Guide to Social Programming: Building Social Context Using Facebook, Google Friend Connect, and the Twitter API, The (Developer''s Library) Review"The Developer's Guide to Social Programming" is like three mini-books in one. It covers Twitter, Facebook and Google Friend Connect. The three sections read a bit differently from each other, but there is only one author. Not disruptive enough to be a problem, just odd.
The book assumes you know PHP, JavaScript, CSS and assorted feed technologies. You don't have to be an expert, but you should be comfortable reading code in these languages.
My favorite things in the book were the flowcharts for the authentication/authorization model and the intro to some concepts. In particular, Twitter's OAuth really stood out as an excellent chapter.
The twitter chapters felt more rushed than the rest of the book. In some ways, I felt like the API was being thrown at me. The diagram form was mostly good, but the descriptions were very rapid fire. I say "mostly" because two of the UML like diagrams were in a font that was too small to read. [Edit: clearer images were posted on the socialprogramming.info]
The author does recognize technology changes quickly and says to follow his blog/site for updates.

Friends with Benefits: A Social Media Marketing Handbook ReviewWhen I started my social media marketing firm three years ago I had an advantage. By autumn, 2006, I had passed through New Media Strategies as Technology Strategist and Edelman's elite Public Affairs Online Advocacy team. Even so, my business partner, Mark Harrison, and I made a lot of mistakes, walked through mine fields, and eventually started taking more hills than we lost. I started Abraham Harrison almost exactly three years ago and I would have really appreciated Friends with Benefits: A Social Media Marketing Handbook by Darren Barefoot and Julie Szabo. Actually, I am kind of bummed that I didn't write this book myself because I certainly could have and should have -- but I didn't. (Via Marketing Conversation)
Friends with Benefits spoke to me because I have "lonely nerd" deep inside of me and this book goes all the way back into the yesteryears of 80s computing when I, too, was surfing the proto-Internet via a 1200-baud modem. Like the book asserts in chapter one, we lonely nerds weren't lonely, "the early BBSs were actually very social" and so were we. Fast-forward from the early 80s -- when I was doing dial-up and geeking out in Honolulu Bulletin Board Systems -- twenty years and "social media" is invented. No, re-invented.
Darren Barefoot and Julie Szabo get it and they lay it all out into this book and basically wrote the book on starting and building Abraham Harrison -- or a firm or agency like it -- from scratch. And not just starting an agency but integrating social media marketing into your advertising or PR agency or even adding smart social media capacity into your big, medium or even small business. I am impressed.
According to the book, "social media marketing is using social media channels to promote your company and its products. This type of marketing should be a subset of your online marketing activities, complementing traditional web-based promotional strategies like email newsletters and online advertising campaigns. Social media marketing qualifies as a form of viral or word-of-mouth marketing." The goal of Friends with Benefits is to take social media, social media marketing, viral marketing, and word-of-mouth marketing and answer "so what" and "what now?"
What I like about this book is that it is not a book on Twitter or Facebook. It answers what and why with a how that is comprehensive and includes geekier-but-essential topics such as RSS, corporate blogging, and even social media news releases. The real value of the book kicks in in chapter 3, "Flagging a Ride: Finding the Right Bloggers and Communities" when the book goes into the explicit details surrounding blogger discovery, blogger prospecting, how to choose the right blog and blogger based on their type (personal, topical, or corporate) and popularity (size matters), including how best to judge bloggers and blogs using various analytics and metrics tools like [...], Alexa Ranking, Google PR, and Technorati Rank. And from more instinctual reviews such as checking out Google Trends, mentions on Google, the number of RSS subscribers on Feedburner, mentions on blogrolls, popularity on Twitter/Facebook/FriendFeed, frequency of posting, volume of comments, professionalism, etc.
Chapter 4 addresses Netiquette, something that a lot of books give very little lip service to -- a small sacrifice to Internet protocol. Friends with Benefits offers quite a solid list of lessons in nettiquette: Listen first, take baby steps, make friends, lay your cards on the table, bloggers aren't journalists, your reputation precedes you, don't be a social media spammer, and don't fib -- probably the most serious list I have found, and one that I have learned needs to be taken dead-seriously. I tried to suggest my favorites, but they're all important to consider, although making friends -- spending time together outside the office, if you will -- is probably one of the most important because when you reach out to anyone for help, especially when it is earned media (meaning you're not paying these bloggers -- or anyone -- to write about you or your client), they're going to ask, "who the hell are you?" and "do I know you?" If you're nobody they know, people are more likely to not make decisions that are compassionate or human, they're more likely to just assume that you're not much better than a bot -- don't let them.
Chapter 5 deals with the social media pitch. Make it compelling, relevant, timely, exclusive, personal, brief, comprehensive, conversational, linked, access, and offers an incentive (or gift, in our parlance). This is exactly the list I would have written -- this is the list my team would have written, too. There are also warning about blogola (payola) and other untoward things not to do, including best practices in follow-up. In fact, the value-add of this list is amazing and with a little help you could very well use Friends with Benefits as a play-book for your burgeoning (or suffering) social media practice -- and the only reason I am proud instead of threatened is that my company actually offers all the doing of the work for our clients and not just social media consulting. That said, this book is going to put a hell of a lot of social media experts (SME) out to pasture when their bosses read this book and learn that their director of social media doesn't know what he's doing. I recommend this book to all the SMEs out there -- read this before your boss does.
Chapter 6 is titled "Measuring Success: How to Monitor the Web." This chapter answers quite a few questions about defining success and return on investment (ROI), the holy grails of social media marketing and the reason why too many companies who need SMM are hesitant to take the next step, boldly. What's smart about this chapter is that Barefoot and Szabo tell it like it is: you need to ask your client and yourself how you define success. Are you interested in brand-building? Growing traffic? Conversion to sales? Social media mentions? Increased buzz? How are you going to do this? Monitoring? Listening? The issue of managing expectations is also raised. Unlike banner ads, that turn on or off like a tap, social media marketing can be a slow-burn. Being "realistic" and "humble" are recommended. Then, after discussing what success could be, Friends with Benefits discusses web monitoring and how to keep track of your successes and failures and then how to follow-up. Following up is key. Moving the relationship forward it key, too. Bloggers -- indeed everyone -- hates being used and there are too many examples of a win, a success, and a post not being followed-up with a neighborly thank you in the form of a private email or a public comment. Remember how your momma told you to be polite and to write a thank you note? Well, come on! Make momma proud.
Chapter 7 addresses risk. And there are risks, such as the campaign not getting off the ground, blogger backlash, the crowd talks back, you get rejected, your initiative dies on the vine, you put all your eggs in social media and your other channels shrivel, not being proactive (or staying in front of it), you will be measures, someone gets cold feet in the organization and the campaign is killed, or even get too much success too soon and you collapse -- #fail -- under its weight. Good advice at the end: proceed with caution, not cowardice." In my experience, campaigns fail from lack of commitment -- from fear and cowardice. Before you get out there to engage, you had better be willing to commit: be brave.
Chapter 8 deals with damage control and crisis management and is short and sweet, dealing with how to deal with crises with a useful crisis management primer. There's too much stuff in there that I can't be pitch here but they do recommend that it is essential to keep head of the crisis: create a crisis response document, create a response blog and social media platform (and reputation) right now instead of after the crisis occurs (though it is never too late) and be willing to engage and not hide down at the bottom of the spider hole.
I am going to go through the rest of the book faster because I really believe that the most important book comes in the first 8 chapters. Chapter 9 reminds us that MySpace is still amazingly relevant with about 125 million users worldwide and needs to be respected and the members can and should be engaged if appropriate. Same thing with Chapter 10 on the subject of Facebook, offering case studies, including a case study my firm took part in: Sharp's [...] campaign on Facebook done for Lowe NY. Chapter 11 deals with [...] and other video-sharing sites. And Chapter 12 briefly addresses microblogging and Twitter. Each of these chapters are brief primers, dealing a little bit with applications, with widgets, with culture and protocol, and a little about marketing.
To me, chapters 8-12 are throw-aways. If you're looking for a book on Twitter marketing, there are better more comprehensive guides. To avoid chapters 8-12 would have been too much of an omission and social networks systems are too sexy right now to leave out; however this book is invaluable and there's nothing like it out there in terms of a realistic portrayal of what works and what doesn't. This books teaches you to measure twice and cut once and to trains the reader up on the culture, the expectations, and protocol of the social...Read more›Friends with Benefits: A Social Media Marketing Handbook Overview

Mobilizing Generation 2.0: A Practical Guide to Using Web 2.0: Technologies to Recruit, Organize and Engage Youth ReviewEdit of 18 May to recommend Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies as a different book, with more practical tips and annecdotal support, but in no way does that reduce my appreciation for this book. Both are excellent, I think of them as truly complementary of one another.
-----
I *like* this book. Although I have years of exposure to advanced information technology and read everything by gurus like Paul Strasssman (cf. Information Productivity: Assessing Information Management Costs of U. S. Corporationsand Steve Arnold (Arnold IT, look for "Google 2.0: The Calculating Predator, not sold on Amazon), I learned stuff from this book, and I found it to be exactly right for getting an old-school CEO or other management skeptic "oriented."
In 268 well-organized and well-presented pages, the book covers:
+ Blogging
+ Social Networking
+ Video and Photo Sharing
+ Mobile Phones
+ Wikis
+ Maps
+ Virtual Worlds
Each chapter has extremely clear headlines, gray boxes, figures, and endnotes. To get a sense of the book and the online offerings that back it up, visit mobilizingyouth.org, just add the www.
A special value is short essays from top practitioners including Mitch Kapor whose essay, next to last, focuses on the coming convergence of virtual worlds and social networking. Visit BigPictureSmallWorld for a sense of the possibilities there--I have very deep admiration for Medard Gabel, who built the analog World Game with Buckminster Fuller, and I am so very eager to see him create EarthGame(TM) in which we all play ourselves and have access to all information in all languages all the time--at that point, we will end looting of our commonwealth, end corruption, and create invite wealth or as he puts it in the title of his new book, "Seven Billion Billionaires."
Most useful to me were the following:
+ Use all these tools internally to get a sense of them, before trying to do something with the broader online population
+ One billion people are connected, the rest are not, but what the billion do with their connections could impact on how quickly we get the other 5-6 billion connected and creating wealth
+ 55% of teens are active online, 80% of college students have a Facebook profile
+ Digg is an example of a global intelligence service in which every citizen is an intelligence consumer, collector, and producer
+ Cool examples that I will certainly look into include Care2, Causes, Hi5, and Gather
+ Politicians (including the three running for President now) simply do not get it. They are still using phone banks that call at all hours and spamming (Obama does less of it) instead of asking permission and then building on the relationship
+ I am very impressed by the natural manner in which the book communicates the relationship between having a good story with heroes, villians, and catalysts, and the sequence of fund-raising via text connection and follow-up. This book strikes me as both a very very good elementary text for digital immigrants (us old guys) and also a useful "once over" for the more experienced who may be overlooking a couple of pieces of the overall campaign.
+ The book emphasizes the many uses of the wiki, many of them internal, some external, but the most important being that wikis are a way of crowd sourcing. See the first book from Earth Intelligence Network, Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace (free at oss.net/CIB just add the www, but utterly lovely here at Amazon) and especially the later chapters on large scale collective and collaborative intelligence in action.
+ Tag clouds are vital, as is the selection of unique tags for clusters of informaiton you want to make easily available.
+ Virtual worlds are in their infancy, and when they finally develop, will be extraordinary as nuanced immersive learning environments (low cost low risk environmental, I would add).
The last essay from Katrin Verclas is great, and I selected the following quote with which to end this review--it captures the essence:
"Web 2.0 describes a participatory, bottom-up, decentralized world full of individual expression where people have direct access to one another and enjoy an unprecedented ability to organize, meet, and coordinate without centralized control or traditional hierarchies."
YES!

33 Million People in the Room: How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking ReviewI highly recommend this book to anybody trying to get their head around the concepts of social networking and why it may be relevant to you.
This book really clarified in my mind, why it is so important to put yourself out there and make growing your network part of your daily ritual along with eating a healthy breakfast and exercise. In all three cases, the benefits may not immediately felt, but over time the payback is indisputable!
Each chapter contains important lessons of how to leverage the tools that now exist so that you can establish and grow your brand online. The story of how Gary Vernechuck, a 22 year old, transformed his parent's wine business from $2 million a year to $45 million a year and became a mini-celebrity in the process is a lesson that can be applied by both individuals and corporations.
In today's down economy, creating a rich network of people that you can tap into is more important than ever before. Need a job? Need a recipe? Need advice on where to stay in the south of France? The more people who know you directly relates to the more people who can help you achieve your goals whatever they may be. It worked for Obama (he tapped into the social networking to raise huge amounts of campaign funds), it can work for you too.
The tools that Juliette gives you in this book can easily be applied by anyone regardless of your field. These are the ingredients you need to know in order to become a 'mini-celebrity'.
The book is both a practical guide for anyone looking to carve out a niche online and get their brand noticed.33 Million People in the Room: How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking OverviewChinese edition of "33 Million People in the Room: How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking" Now that sites like Facebook, Twitter and other social networking websites are flourishing, it is a force that no sales should ignore. Design and Launch an Online Social Networking Business in a Week (Entrepreneur Magazine's Click Starts) ReviewI suppose I shouldn't have taken the book at its title. However, I expected a book on how to launch and design an online social networking business in a week. As in, day 1, you do this. Day 2, let's do this now. Day 3, and so on. What I got was a lovely overview in how to design and launch an online social networking business, but the ideas weren't laid out with enough concrete detail that if I hadn't had the technical expertise I did, well, I don't think I would have gotten as far as I had.
The software recommendations were woefully limited. There was no discussion of many free open source platforms out there, and the focus seemed to be on a "facebook" clone, rather than something unique and different.
It's a good book. A basic book. But one that I probably wouldn't use as the sole basis for my business, and I'm glad I picked up other books. Needs more meat, and probably a better time table, so someone could, indeed, launch their online social networking business in a week.Design and Launch an Online Social Networking Business in a Week (Entrepreneur Magazine's Click Starts) Overview

Web 2.0 and Social Networking for the Enterprise: Guidelines and Examples for Implementation and Management Within Your Organization Review"Web 2.0 and Social Networking for the Enterprise" is an overview of IBM products for the social networking. (See my review of "The Social Factor" for a better, less IBM specific take on the world while still being written by IBMers.) I also had a "this book is in search of an audience" moment at the beginning. It assumes you haven't heard of AJAX and then goes on to show long detailed code.
As far as product overview, I think the book does well. It covers different IBM offerings (portlets, connections, quickr, etc.) There are many screenshots and the book talks about what each one is good for. There are some tips throughout, but I felt they got buried in the "how to use the tools" descriptions.
If you are working an a shop using IBM social networking products, this is a good guide to them all. My low rating is because I didn't get that's what it would be about from the title or subtite. I expected it to cover more "guidelines and examples for implementation and management within your organization." I feel "The Social Factor" does that in a less product centric way.

Facebook Cookbook: Building Applications to Grow Your Facebook Empire ReviewThis tutorial is for developers with a broad but not necessarily deep background in web development who are interested in building Facebook web applications. Although Facebook Desktop and Mobile apps are covered where applicable, the content of this book is about straight web applications. Material covered includes how to plan an app, API details and FQL calls, and how to market and attract users, so there should be something for all participants in Facebook app development.
The author assumes you already know your way around web development in the areas of HTML, CSS, PHP programming, and SQL/database design. You don't need to be an expert with any of them, and the author makes suggestions on good books on all of the supporting technologies. The following is the detailed table of contents for the book, which is currently not included in the product description:
Chapter 1. Introducing Facebook Platform - A general overview of Facebook, Facebook Platform, and an introduction to the opportunity it represents.
Chapter 2. Ideation and Strategy - If you don't have an idea in mind already for an app, this chapter helps you out by giving you some ideas for some applications that you can extend. Shows techniques for doing app design quickly and with the best possible results.
Chapter 3. Hello World - Walks you through the classic Hello World first programming example.
Chapter 4. Architecture and Design - Covers the best architectures for Facebook apps, provides some recommendations for database performance, and produces an overview of the design and user experience of some winning applications.
Chapter 5. Setting Up Your Environment - Learn about all the things you need to download in order to get started. Learn how to add apps to Facebook, how to set up a test account, and how to get information on the latest changes to Facebook.
Chapter 6. Facebook Markup Language (FBML) - FBML is the glue that holds the Facebook Platform together. Covers all of the tags, discusses some odd behaviors you might encounter, and explores some great tricks for building better frontends.
Chapter 7. Facebook JavaScript (FBJS) - This chapter explains why you can't just use regular JavaScript in your app, how to build great Ajax-like interactions using Facebook's Mock Ajax techniques, and goes into detail about all of the useful functions available to you.
Chapter 8. Facebook Query Language (FQL) - As FBML is to HTML, FQL is to SQL. This chapter examines the schema of the various database tables to which you have access, and catalogs some really useful FQL queries you can use in your apps.
Chapter 9. Facebook API - Digs deep into the code of the API that connects everything together. The chapter goes through each of the objects and methods you have at your disposal, and gives you some tips and tricks for desktop apps. The chapter covers the API using the official Facebook PHP Client, but it shouldn't be too hard to convert these examples into your language of choice.
Chapter 10. Marketing Your App - Supplies some general marketing options for Facebook applications and some techniques for measuring your success at attracting people to your app.
You should be able to use the book either by reading cover to cover or by skipping around in it. It is well-illustrated and the code is well commented. Highly recommended. Also recommended for those just starting out is FBML Essentials, since a good understanding of FBML is essential for success.Facebook Cookbook: Building Applications to Grow Your Facebook Empire Overview
Want to build Facebook applications that truly stand out among the thousands already available? In addition to providing easy-to-follow recipes that offer practical ways to design and build scalable applications using the Facebook Platform and its new profile design, this Cookbook also explains proven strategies for attracting users in this highly competitive environment. Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust ReviewI was looking forward to reading this book as I work in social media and highly respect the authors. I'm always weary of reviews of social media books because, let's face it, in general the authors know more about reviews/ratings and how to manipulate them more than authors of other books. Anyway, I was very disappointed in Trust Agents. I felt that it was similar to other social media books in that the authors are trying to create catch phrases or buzz words (e.g. "trust agents") being that this is a new industry and creating a buzz phrase is a great marketing tactic. Despite the book's description, this is more of a theoretical book and does not offer practical advice that can be used at the tactical level.
It might not be a bad book if you're new to social media, but if you're experienced you're basically going to hear the same old stuff with different jargon. Then again, if you're new to social media you're much better off reading Groundswell. You'll get plenty of interesting supporting data there rather than anecdotal evidence of why certain strategies work.Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust OverviewThe New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller-now in a new, updated paperback edition
