Upstarts: How GenY Entrepreneurs are Rocking the World of Business and 8 Ways You Can Profit from Their Success ReviewLiving and working in Silicon Valley: the land of VC 's and start-ups, I was intrigued to read this book. Fenn begins by describing GenY entrepreneurs as builders of "the new lemonade stand." How true that is about the GenY revolution and their impact and influence on modern business practices. With a population size of roughly 80 million, a predisposition to all things technology and little start-up capital required to produce results, it's fair to say we all need to pay attention to how they think and operate.

Fenn opens up the dialogue with how cultural norms within this group fuel their passion and direction such as brand, social justice, and the need to work on their terms - a philosophy born out of seeing their parents get wiped out from corporate downsizing. They see a servant-leader model focused on collaboration that strives to share the wealth with all. To that end they don't view weekends and long hours as work - but an extension of themselves and their passions - the very fuel that most entrepreneurs need to be successful.
In terms of modeling, Upstarts shows the basic formula for the Millennial world view. They grew up understanding team activities so they collaborate easily. College is the incubator where they meet like-minded spirits. Throw in a dose of mentoring and encouragement their creativity flows. Soon corporations (often in the form of strategic partnerships or community outreach) get involved and fund their innovations.
Leveraging technology is key as well. No surprise as Fenn points out; Millennial entrepreneurs are accustomed to an imperfect business launch via the web, coupled with social networking chatter and buzz. Soon a community platform is built that praises (and buys) the product or service idea. It doesn't take long for this simple business plan to leapfrog into game changers or new rules of engagement. This mentality allows the GenY entrepreneur to adapt quickly to changing customer needs, uncover underserved niches, and professionalize old-economy businesses.

Acting fast on trends or rapid re-design isn't the only key differentiators for GenY entrepreneurs. Fenn describes the role this group plays in corporations and what to do about managing this talent pool. Fenn outlines key strategies such as flexibility, continuous learning, frequent feedback, open spaces, and increasing the frequency of web-based tools to keep communication flowing and dynamic.

Fenn interviewed 150 young CEOs for the data behind the conceptual and practical guidance she offers in Upstarts. The result is a rich text that gives you background, real world examples, and playlists that condense the essential learning points into digestible information chunks. The book also contains an appendix full of stats from her survey and advice from experts which is very insightful in itself.

A New Brand World: Eight Principles for Achieving Brand Leadership in the Twenty-First Century ReviewIt is difficult to review a book that one has enjoyed reading and then say that it was not up to the mark (in terms, of course, of only my expectations.)
No doubt that Scott Bedbury's work is a fast paced read, his writing is lucid and quite frequently quotably light-hearted. There is a lot of material here for people in larger corporations or even general marketing folks. And where Bedbury truly shines is in the case studies he presents in the 8 chapters.
But if, like me, you set off on this book looking for some newfangled insights into the world of branding, then this is not the book for you. The title claims to proffer "8 principles". Let's face it, at the end of the day, principles are not that hard to create and this becomes quite painfully clear when you reach the end of this book and wonder if you have learnt anything new.
But I am being unfairly critical. From his style, it seems an approachable business book was precisely what Bedbury's intended?
As a comprehensive introduction to the field of branding, I'd still recommend "Strategic Brand Asset Management" by Keller. For a discussion of some innovative yet reasonable forms of brand creation, especially on a shoestring, I'd usually point to a PR related book, or perhaps the rapier wit "60-minutes Brand Strategist."
But as a gentle introduction for executives in to the nebulous world of branding, or as a non-technical business book for business folk in general who place less emphasis on a structured analytical framework and are more interested in a soft springboard into the field, then "Emotional Branding" and this book from Bedbury are pretty near the top of my list of recommendations.
Very accessible and insightful stuff, if you aren't expecting a summary of last decade's JCR.A New Brand World: Eight Principles for Achieving Brand Leadership in the Twenty-First Century OverviewWhat does it really take to succeed in business today? In A New Brand World, Scott Bedbury, who helped make Nike and Starbucks two of the most successful brands of recent years, explains this often mysterious process by setting out the principles that helped these companies become leaders in their respective industries. With illuminating anecdotes from his own in-the-trenches experiences and dozens of case studies of other winning-and failed-branding efforts (including Harley-Davidson, Guinness, The Gap, and Disney), Bedbury offers practical, battle-tested advice for keeping any business at the top of its game.

Professional SharePoint 2010 Branding and User Interface Design (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewIt is easy to leave reviews, or even read books, but writing books is a whole another deal.
Writing good books is not easy. It is very difficult to present cohesive and accurate thoughts that are the work of many minds over many months over hundreds of meticulously carved pages.
In reading this book, I was happy to see that no stone was left unturned when talking specifically about SharePoint 2010 branding - no this is not a IT pro book, this is not a developer's book.
There cannot be a single book that covers EVERYTHING about SP2010. But when it comes to branding, this book is top notch.
I was especially pleased to see attention to detail such as not ignoring core CSS principles, HTML standards, browser sense, trends etc.. Branding SharePoint is not exactly the same your typical ASP.NET or PHP site. Branding SharePoint 2010 is it's own unique skill that requires significant SharePoint knowledge. It isn't just CSS and HTML and JavaScript, it is also navigation, security, master pages, standard CSS specific to SharePoint, SharePoint and ASPNET controls applicable to SharePoint, the theming engine, etc. etc. etc.
I was hoping that this book didn't sacrifice the classic branding knowledge, which is pure CSS,HTML and Javascript, in favor of being a pure one sided SharePoint book. And I am happy to see that this is a book well grounded in the current technology set, SharePoint or otherwise.
Finally, I like the author's writing style (disclaimer, I'm around page #200 right now). I hate to read books that have the personality of a whitepaper. This book is very conversational and fun to read.
Good work!Professional SharePoint 2010 Branding and User Interface Design (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewA must have guide for creating engaging and usable SharePoint 2010 branding
With SharePoint 2010, Microsoft has provided a more robust environment for creating collaboration and content management sites that rival any of the popular websites on the internet. Creating a branded SharePoint site involves understanding both traditional web design techniques as well as topics that are typically reserved for developers. This book bridges that gap by not only providing expert guidance for creating beautiful public facing and internal intranet sites but it also addresses the needs of those readers that only want to understand the basics enough to apply some style to their sites.
Things like creative design, the experience visitors have navigating your user interface, ease of use?these are all important branding considerations and not always intuitive. This unique book from a team of SharePoint branding experts lays it all out. The book is divided into four sections:
Introduction to SharePoint Branding: In this part you will learn about what SharePoint branding is and how the topic has changed since SharePoint 2007.
Branding Basics: This section is geared towards both getting started as well as being a guide for people that don?t want to dive super deep into the advanced topics of SharePoint branding. You will learn about how to plan for branding projects, including creating wireframes and creative mockups as well as gathering requirements and estimation. You will learn how to work with SharePoint Designer 2010, SharePoint 2010 themes, and SharePoint navigation as well as gain an understanding of the low and medium effort approaches to branding can be used to make SharePoint look more like your own visual style.
Advanced Branding: This is where you will learn about the more intricate techniques for making large changes to the SharePoint UI, such as cascading style sheets (CSS), master pages, page layouts, web parts and XSLT. You will also get an introduction to deploying SharePoint branding to production servers using solution packages (WSP).
Other Topics: Everything else that is related to SharePoint branding is discussed here, including working with the SharePoint 2010 ribbon and client side technologies such as the client object model, jQuery, and Silverlight.

Whether you want to make SharePoint look completely different or just make minor design changes, this expert guide will provide tips, techniques, and insights to get the job done.

The Open Brand: When Push Comes to Pull in a Web-Made World ReviewAnyone who is involved in marketing, product development, sales, public relations, or customer service should read this book.
Traditionally, companies have developed their message and pushed it out to their customers--this is push marketing. Companies would push demand through the sales channels. So, the various efforts were company-driven: product development, marketing, sales, and customer service, to name a few.
Today, the marketing model is increasingly a pull model. Customers pull demand through the various channels. And not just to the companies--but to a vast network of other people. This massive customer communication puts customers, not companies, in the driver's seat. If marketing is a show, the audience of customers now controls the stage. This is why a book like The Open Brand matters.
The book consists of four Parts. Part One consists of three chapters. These focus on the concept of "Open." The author has an acronym:
O: On-demand.
P: Personal.
E: Engaging.
N. Networked.
These describe today's marketing environment. While customers are empowered due to online tools such as Instant Messaging, e-mail, blogs, and communities, the effects of their communications reach well beyond the online world into every nook and cranny of the offline world as well.
Part II discusses the iCitizen. The power of the consumer is far different from what it was a few years ago. What is this power, and how did the iCitizen end up with it? Who are iCitizens? Who has more influence--a few celebrities, or thousands of regular people who all have a voice? Part II answers these questions and more. It also explains how and why the iCitizen can be both the medium and the message.
Part III explains the response to the iCitizen. It presents a strategic framework that allows a company to make sense of Part I (the social Web) and Part II (the iCitizen). It discusses the two trends that, more than any others, anchor the open brand framework:
The emergence of consumer notoriety. This is in stark contrast to what has historically been consumer anonymity with regard to brands (and the world). Now consumers can be highly visible, almost instantly. The implications are profound.
The emergence of creative production. This is in stark contrast to simple, uncritical consumption. Today, we have a dazzling array of engaging online activities that didn't exist just a few years ago. Someone writes a blog or releases a video, and a viewpoint (good or bad) can easily go viral.
Part IV is titled "Getting to Open." It's based on what the authors call "The Four OPEN Experiences." Different people experience the Web in different ways. The authors classify these as:
Collectively inclined icitizens believe "I connect."
Cultural change agents believe "I am."
Digital competence seekers believe "I can."
Celebrity-motivated icitizens believe "I matter."
Do you know which group (or experience) has the most power? The answer may surprise you, and that's OK. What's not OK is not learning the answer and doing something about it. What you do, exactly, depends on several interdependent factors. Part IV addresses those.
When you're done reading this book, you'll have an understanding of who is really driving many of the choices companies make. More importantly, you'll have a framework for developing a suitable response with long-term viability.
The book has an appendix with a glossary, acknowledgements, and index. The Open Brand: When Push Comes to Pull in a Web-Made World OverviewMany of the best brands today are of geek pedigree, powered by thetechnologies, traits and trends of the ascendant digital channel.Amidst the decline of mass marketing, push marketing tactics have beensuperseded by new forms of influence. These include the creating, sharing and influencing behaviors of an online population no longercontent merely to consume, and the potent pairing of digital notorietyand network effects, which has given rise to the icitizenry. From these sociocultural forces emerges a radical business imperative:to open up to consumer involvement in a brand's messages and offerings.Published under Peachpit's New Riders imprint in partnership with AIGADesign Press, The Open Brand illuminates both therisks and immense rewards of doing so, and describes the essentialconsumer experiences that are requisite for culturalrelevance—On-demand, Personal, Engaging, and Networked experiences, representing the chief values of the web-made world.

Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling ReviewMichael Port begins his book practically: "[T]here may be two simple reasons why you don't serve as many clients as you'd to today. You either don't know what to do to attract and secure more clients or you know what to do but you're not actually doing it" (p. xxvii).
In the pages that follow, he unpacks his "Booked Solid System" to which he ascribes the power to solve both of those stated problems.
Contrasting "old school" and "new school" marketing methods, he writes, "[Many] have come to believe that marketing and selling is pushy and self-centered and borders on sleazy ... You must never fall into the typical client-snagging mentality. If you do, you'll operate in a mentality of scarcity and shame as opposed to one of abundance and integrity" (p. xxix).
Questions to ask yourself:
How can I be fully self-expressed in my work to create meaning for me and those whom I serve?
How can I work only in the areas of my greatest strengths and talents so that I can shine?
How many relationships with people of purpose did I make and deepen?
How can I better listen to and serve my ideal clients?
How can I wow people with substance?
How can I overdeliver on my promises to my clients?
How can I cooperate with other professionals to create more abundance?
Port's claim is a large one: "If you keep asking yourself these questions, if you set a solid foundation for your business, build trust and credibility within your marketplace, and use the seven core self-promotion strategies [offered later in the book], you'll be booked solid in no time" (p. xxx).
His layout of information consists of 3 modules: Your Foundation, Building Trust and Credibility, and The Seven Core Self-Promotion Strategies.
Each of the modules has something worthy to note, but I found module 1 to be the most informative and helpful - especially chapter 2: "Why People Buy What You're Selling."
He counsels, "Marketing and sales isn't about trying to convince, coerce, or manipulate people into buying your services. It's about putting yourself out in front of, and offering your services to, those whom you are meant to serve - people already looking for your services" (p. 17).
Those who are already looking for your services are those who should make up your target market. It's in this section where Port shines. He says, "Your target market's urgent needs [the things they would like to move away from] and compelling desires [the things that they would like to move toward] prompt them to go in search of you and your services ... You must offer what your potential clients want to buy, not you want to sell or think they should want to buy" (p. 22).
What will cause someone to purchase the service that you are selling?
" [I]f your potential clients are going to purchase your service and products, they must see them as investable opportunities; they must feel that the return they receive is greater than the investment they made.
... This return will come in different forms, depending on what you offer, but the return is almost always financial or [24] emotional.
... Rather than talking about what you do, focus instead on clear, specific, and detailed solutions that solve your clients' problems" (pp. 23-24).
The next biggest issue that Port addresses is how we talk about what we do - commonly referred to as "The Elevator Speech." This is important because, in Port's words, "A primary reason that many service professionals fail to build thriving businesses is that they struggle to articulate - in a clear and compelling way - exactly what solutions and benefits they offer" (p. 47). Port offers guidance and examples for a long version, a mid-length version, and a short version by mixing and matching your answers to some exercises that you've already worked through. Those exercises include: Summarizing your target market in one sentence, identifying the three most critical problems faced by that market, telling how you solve these problems (the more unique the better), mentioning the most dramatic ("Wow!") results that your clients have experienced, and including the benefits your clients receive" (see p. 51).
This wisdom alone is worth the price of the book. The rest is just bonus as far as I'm concerned!Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling Overview
