Android Wireless Application Development (2nd Edition) (Developer''s Library) ReviewThis books list many code examples, but it lacks in explanation. The examples are good for understanding what is possible in Android. The beginning the book has a good introduction chapter that can get you started in Android programming. But then it goes on wasting a lot of space with xml and code listings and not focusing on explaining the essentials. It is not a bad book but i miss a little more information on how to put everything together into a real working application. There is a chapter on best practices but it only gives very general information.
Before buying the book you might just download the examples from the book website first.

How I Made My First Million on the Internet and How You Can Too: The Complete Insider's Guide to Making Millions with Your Internet Business ReviewEwen Chia is a smart guy. The question is: Is this book for you?
This book is what you'd expect. It's very similar to other books released in this genre. Info is ok, but you walk away feeling it's more of a tool for the author to find new customers than anything else.
The book talks about "mindset," which is important. Ewen's story is interesting. To me, this was the best part of the book and worth the price. If you're looking for a complete, step-by-step blueprint to millions online though, you won't find it here.
The book is divided into roughly six sections:
- Ewen's story
- basics of online marketing
- tools you'll need
- picking your market
- getting traffic
- your offer
In my opinion, the content is too advanced for newbies, yet too basic for those who have been at this for a while. Both will probably get something out of it, but newbies looking for a plan and others looking to get a sneak peak at how Ewen really makes his money will both walk away unsatisfied. There are a lot of missing pieces, even though the book is over 350 pages.
There is some good stuff here, if you can read between the lines. The book is worth the price.
If you're brand new, and can only afford one book, you're much better off with something like Quit Your Job (and Never Go Back) - How to Create, Start, & Market an Online Business for Under $500 in 30 Days or Less, which is specifically for people who are just getting started and want to get online quickly. It doesn't promise as much, but you can't deposit promises in the bank. Don't Click on the Blue E: Switching to Firefox ReviewThis book is basically a primer on making the switch to Firefox as your web browser of choice. While Firefox is a better browser in many ways, it is not without its problems. For example, occasionally you run across a website that is poorly written and has sections that are specific to Microsoft Explorer and Microsoft update will only allow Explorer to use the update feature.

So, why change from Internet Explorer? Even with the newer versions it always seems to be a step or two behind other Internet browsers. Firefox is wonderfully convenient with tabbed browsing, better support for web standards, greater user control, and security that is so much better than Explorer as to make Explorer security appear to be non-existent. It has better pop-up blocking and far fewer infections from spyware and other malicious code. Since switching two years ago and adding GhostSurf I have not had any spyware or other infections. SEO Warrior ReviewI just finished reading SEO Warrior today. I'm a professional developer (mostly systems engineering in C, python, and java), but I dabble in best-practices web design on my spare time for fun. I picked up a copy of this book as I've heard a lot about "SEO" in the industry, but wasn't sure whether or not it was something real, or just a buzz word.
The author of this book, John I. Jerkovic does an excellent job not only detailing exactly how SEO works, but also why it works, what is good, and what is bad. The book starts out by proving certain SEO elements are legitimate, by using some perl program to perform a large amount of searches for popular keywords, then compare HTML elements of the top ranked sites to see what they have in common (keyword density, title element, meta tags, etc.) In my opinion, this alone was worth the money, as it clearly shows by real-world example, that SEO does work, and proves what elements are more important than others.
The material covered is very thorough (and at times, a bit too wordy), and will leave you with no questions unanswered. The author covers:
- tools to help you test your websites for SEO
- how to use google, yahoo, and bing searches to look for competitors
- how to use google, yahoo, and bing optimizations elements in your HTML pages to promote "organic SEO"
- how to avoid search engine spam
- how the nofollow attribute works
- how to create a sitemap
- how to write a robots.txt file
- where to look for relevant information on SEO
- how to use advertising to your advantage
- how to get money by showing ads on your website
- how to find and detect blackhat SEO
- how to use social media sites (twitter, facebook, etc.) to establish your brand
and a good deal of other topic.
The book is a bit thick, coming in at around 400 pages of content, but has quite a few diagrams illustrating google, yahoo, and bing webmaster tools (among other things), which take up ~5 -> 10% of the total pages. It is a very easy read, not very heavy on coding, but also not too high level.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who does web design themselves, and is interested in making their pages popular, but doesn't really know anything about SEO. The book teaches you everything you'll need to know, and takes you from nothing to everything in a few days.

While a good resource, I want to mention right off that bat that if you don't have any programming experience, you're going to be completely lost with this one. That doesn't mean you have to be the foremost expert, but you need to have some familiarity with how programming works because this book (no surprise by the title), moves a bit quickly.
If you do have programming experience, but you haven't done Android application development, this is a good introduction. It carries you "hour by hour" (each chapter is supposedly an hour) to bring you through to completion of a basic application. Depending on your level of skill, some chapters will be a breeze, others are going to take longer than an hour. At the end, you will probably not be the foremost authority on Android development, but you'll have a foundation to explore more.
From my own perspective, I did computer programming for several years, mainly in C and C++ (but I've had experience with Java, which you'll need here), later doing database programming. I never touched Android development until this book so I found it useful and, for the most part, I could grasp the concepts. Sams Teach Yourself Android Application Development in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself -- Hours) ReviewFinally, I finished reading this book 24 hr is a misnomer, if you are thinking to finish the book in a day (it took me 13 days 2 hr a day cover to cover). One of the nice thing is the book is in Full Colour version these include screenshots, code and references to Eclipse (especially helpful if you are new with eclipse development). The book is easy to read, font and spacing were pleasing.
I should confess this is a beginner's book. You need some basic understanding of java and its concepts. The game the author picked was too basic for me, I wish I would have stated with this book months ago as it covers androids basic concepts and the first 6 chapters builds up the ground work for development on how to use eclipse and introduction to device debugging and logging( Eclipse DDMS, Android LogCat Logging).
A very good early introduction to debugging in chapter 2 right place before you get your hands dirty with coding, which i haven't seen any other books covering in that details. The author also mentions the reason they selected to use a particular android API or functionality at places and provide links for further reading.
There are also examples and exercises and although they are simple and primitive they give you the idea how to implement or use specific functionality and the solution for exercises are missing (it would have been helpful if there was a downloadable version on the website).Tips at some places are very useful and practical, some places it was an eye opener for an advance developer like me.

Beginning Java Google App Engine ReviewI was very frustrated with my purchase and I was contemplating to write a review out of frustration. However, after I've seen the 5-star reviews from other users, I couldn't believe my eyes. One review was raving about the code samples (absolutely ridiculous) and then I saw one other reader leaving a comment for the review saying that he's been working on the sample code for weeks and still couldn't make it work and I can relate to that.
I pre-order this book from Amazon and when I start reading it, it was a total disappointment. I've been working on GAE/J for a while now and I bought this book specifically to learn more about Google Accounts. The example projects are not complete and it requires you to fill in the blanks to make them work. I've also looked at the other chapters and they lack in content. The book tries to give you overall, breadth-first view of the technology (as you would expect from a beginner level book), but while doing so it mentions about bunch of GAE topics, but fails on giving good coverage for that topic. Especially in chapter 4, when the author(s) talk about frameworks, they don't mention about gotchas on how to make these frameworks work at the first place, because if you're using Spring, BlazeDS and GraniteDS (or any other frameworks, you need to do certain tweaks to make these frameworks/technologies/APIs work with GAE, because some of the Java APIs are "black-listed" by the App Engine for the obvious reasons.
If you're a beginner, this is not a book for you. If you're advanced, then again this book doesn't give you enough in-depth information of the GAE/J topics. In conclusion, it's sad to say, but this book is useless! You can save money just by going to Google's App Engine website and find more up-to-date and complete information, because they keep changing/upgrading the SDKs for GWT and the App Engine almost every month.Beginning Java Google App Engine OverviewGoogle App Engine is one of the key technologies to emerge in recent years to help developers build web applications. A great number of the developers approach the App Engine are Java developers, and this title is especially focused for this large audience sector.

Search Engine Optimization All-in-One For Dummies ReviewBruce Clay is one of the gurus of Search Engine Optimization, so I was very eager to read this SEO book. I teach SEO in San Francisco and also online at [...], and am always looking to the SEO leaders like Bruce Clay to learn.
The good - the book does have a lot of useful information. It is especially strong on the technical aspects of SEO, such as how fast your server responds to Google queries. This is a relatively new emphasis in SEO and one that many beginners are not yet aware of. His concept of siloing - putting like items into like directories is also a very good way to conceptualize how you should organize your website.
But, like so many SEO books, the book suffers from esoterica fatigue. Too much information, too many details, and not enough clear "big picture" guidelines into what should be done when. As I have learned from my own SEO students, they often need a simple step-by-step guide to SEO, and need to prioritize their efforts. Yes, your server response speed is important, but getting your home page TITLE tag correct is even more so.
I would recommend this book for experts and advanced SEO people. Google Maps Hacks: Tips & Tools for Geographic Searching and Remixing ReviewThe Google Maps API lets developers embed Google Maps in their own web pages with JavaScript. You can add overlays to the map (including markers and polylines) and display shadowed "info windows" just like in the maps section of Google. "Google Map Hacks" shows you how to use the power of the Google Maps API to perform useful tasks via your web pages. A key is required to use the API, and a single Google Maps API key is valid for a single directory on your web server, so the key you get will be good for all URLs in that particular directory. You must have a Google Account to get a Maps API key, and your API key will be connected to your Google Account.
The book starts out with a simple "Hello World" map application and moves on to show you how to map local weather conditions, find the best prices on a particular product, share pictures with your community, and add interactivity by causing a map to pan or zoom in response to user input. There are a total of 70 hacks that are actually map projects rather than just tips, which is often the case in other O'Reilly Hack books. I particularly liked the set of hacks in chapter 4, "On the Road". Since I live in the uber-congested Washington DC metro area, it is helpful to have hacks that tell me how to avoid traffic jams and how to find out "why my cell phone doesn't work there". Because using the Google Map API depends on inserting the correct code into the Javascript of web pages, the reader should already be familiar with HTML and with Javascript in order to get the most from this book. The Art of SEO: Mastering Search Engine Optimization (Theory in Practice) ReviewI am one who has been very outspoken about the more shady SEO practitioners and about the ridiculously overprices "courses" that are heavily promoted on the Internet. SEO has acquired some of the taint of huckster marketing because of that.
I hope this book helps eliminate some of that. There's no need to pay some self-styled "Internet Guru" hundreds or thousands of dollars for SEO secrets. There are no secrets: every concept, every "trick", every piece of advice is available on the Internet for free. Of course you have to find it all, you have to learn what things are outdated, what advice doesn't work - or you could find 99% here in this book.
Of course it's not for everyone. It assumes some technical knowledge or at least access to someone with that knowledge. As an example, at several points 301 redirects are used as the solution certain SEO issues. Although some minor direction is given about implementing these, you'd need more than is provided here if you were a neophyte - someone using Blogger or [...] isn't going to become proficient with Apache from reading this.
The only small complaint I can make is that sometimes the authors use too many examples, especially for the more basic concepts at the beginning of the book. However, too many is far better than too few, so I won't complain too much. I definitely can't complain that they left anything out: this could serve as a course book for a SEO class.

Your Google Game Plan for Success: Increasing Your Web Presence with Google AdWords, Analytics and Website Optimizer ReviewGoogle AdWords can be a powerful addition to your marketing strategy, but a confusing one. Teixeira's book is a good introduction to AdWords, but overwhelms with details and underwhelms with strategy. He does, however, a good job leading us step-by-step through AdWords as a software platform.
The book does not have enough information or guidance on keyword strategy, how your ads should interface with what you as a company sell or do. Nor is it connected to your SEO strategy, yet these things should work together.
On a technical level, I was disturbed by the discussion on 'broad match.' 'Broad match' is often misunderstood by most of my clients; putting in 'dog boarding' may yield results not just for the words 'dog' and 'boarding' but also 'puppy' 'animal' and even cat. Few seems to get this, and Teixeria doesn't tell you this hugely important point, nor how to find out the true keyword matches once you are running. I have had many clients waste thousands of dollars on broad match!
Strategically, the most important issue I teach students in my classes on SEO and Social Media (Google Jason McDonald to find me), is that AdWords should be part and parcel of your SEO strategy - get what you can get for free, first, and build AdWords on top of it. This book doesn't embed AdWords into a strategic perspective; for that you are on your own.
So in sum, it's a good book on AdWords, but not a great book, and it won't make my shelf of recommendations for my students in AdWords and SEO, either online and in San Francisco.Your Google Game Plan for Success: Increasing Your Web Presence with Google AdWords, Analytics and Website Optimizer Overview

Mobile Marketing: Finding Your Customers No Matter Where They Are ReviewAs a marketer for over twenty years, keeping up with all of the technological marketing medium opportunities that have emerged and continue to evolve isn't as easy as it once was. Well-focused, detailed and informative books on a specific growing opportunity, written by an expert, definitely help. This one delivers well on this front. Here's the more specific upsides and potential downsides I see, depending on your expertise and needs.
KEY UPSIDES:
- It's a thorough and well-organized in-depth look across the spectrum of mobile marketing.
There isn't anything I can think of this book should have included that it didn't. It starts with a history and overview of the strengths and complexities of Mobile Marketing and a detailed look at how to target and track your MM audience.
Throughout the book there are great case studies. After looking into each of the different approaches that one might take with their mobile marketing efforts. It goes on to explore the international MM landscape and privacy/spam issues. There's also an appendix of supplier resources, text symbols and a glossary of frequently used terms.
- It's a practical, tactical "how to guide" too.
For each type of potential mobile marketing campaign - including advertising, promotions, application creation, e-commerce, search engine optimization and integrating it with mass media- you'll get a break down of the various mobile marketing tactics available, considerations to help you decide if that kind of effort is right for your business needs, and the best practices, instructions and resources to help you make it happen.
- You recieve free access to the on-line version of the book, w/ purchase of the hard copy.
It's a good reference that's only a click away.
POTENTIAL DOWNSIDES:
- It's not going to be current for long.
One of the great things about this book is that it includes recent research and has added things like a chapter specifically dedicated to iPhone marketing - not included in many other books. But, w/ the recent launch of the iPad - there's already a new chapter waiting to be made. Some of the more specific info is just going to get outdated extremely quickly.
- It'll be easier to understand and more useful to marketers who are already fairly savvy on Internet Marketing and have worked with larger scale campaigns.
Mobile marketing opportunities, to a great extent, parallel Internet marketing ones. So, in many cases the book is highlighting the differences between the two, and it can and does get very technical. MM is also very resource intensive. This makes it more difficult currently for smaller organizations to use as efficiently - and the book really focuses on larger scale initiatives.
BOTTOM LINE: A well-written, thorough and practical guide, as well as reference book. For as long as it remains current, I highly recommend it to marketers that want a greater understanding of the potential Mobile Marketing opportunities available to their brands.

The section on traffic analysis at least talks about a professional tool (WebTrends) but then goes down a long and unnecessarily technical talk about web logs that is sure to bore the heck out of non-technical readers. If you don't mind getting spammed big time, by registering for some of the services the author recommends that are still around, and don't mind dropping in the ranks of Google at all, then get this book and follow its advice. I wish I had had this book when I started. This is the best explanation I've seen of entities and how they relate to transactions. The code examples in Python and Java are extremely helpful and give great insight into how the two languages approach the App Engine abstractions. The sections on data modeling and Django integration are particularly good. Not only did this book fill in gaps in my knowledge, but it is sufficiently detailed that I'm sure I will keep it on my desk as a reference. I've tried the other App Engine books and this is by far the best. Essential GWT: Building for the Web with Google Web Toolkit 2 (Developer''s Library) Review"Essential GWT" covers the intermediate to advanced level features of Google's GWT2. While a little time is spent getting the reader set up, it is certainly not aimed at beginners and rapidly dives into the topics that receive inadequate coverage in starter books. There appears to be plenty of confusion about this book, but in my opinion this is caused by assuming that the basic topics will be covered.
I liked it a lot. The prose is easy to read and often amusing and the author is experienced and well aware of the realities and limitations of GWT and doesn't try to over sell the product. Even excluding the value of the technical content this alone makes it easy to consume.
Between the covers lies a wealth of information to help design your next application or improve an existing one. While each chapter covers an important subject, the code samples and best practices are of equal value in boosting the strength of any GWT app. The range of topics covered in the chapters will help elevate your applications to enterprise level stable and mature applications and allow you to apply full testing rigor.
So while I understand the negative comments regarding this book, in my opinion it is an excellent GWT resource provided it is not your first GWT resource.

Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform (Pragmatic Programmers) ReviewI've read several books on Android from cover to cover, and skimmed several others, and "Hello, Android" is hands-down the best introduction to Android development.
Here's why I say that --
You really can get through the book in a day or two. The explanations are clear, the topics focus on what's relevant to getting started in Android development, and when you're done you have the skills to dive into the SDK to continue learning.
There is a consistent example project that is developed throughout the book. I found this very helpful, because it showed me how all the different parts fit together. For example, launching activities from an existing activity, using multiple classes in your project, adding preferences, etc.
There are very few (if any) "gotchas" in this book. I followed the examples step by step without any problem. I think some people have used the book's online forum to ask about which packages to import, but when I used Eclipse it was done automatically for me. (By the way, all the files are also online.)
Even after having many months of Android development under my belt, I find that I still refer back to this book from time to time. That's saying something for a book that sets out to be an introduction.
Remember, this book is a great introduction. If you already know Android and are looking for a deep-dive, look elsewhere. But if you are curious about all the excitement around Android and have a few hours to spare, spend them with this book and find out what developing in Android is all about.Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform (Pragmatic Programmers) Overview
