Macromedia Studio MX 2004 Bible ReviewThe small non-profit company I work for needed a website, and I drew the short straw for designing and maintaining it. We bought the Studio MX suite, and I hoped this book would cover everything I needed to design a simple, yet cool website.
The thing is it DOES cover EVERYTHING I needed, but it is SO overwhelming in all the details, I was pulling my hair out and wondering what I'd gotten myself into.
You really have have some experience with website design before attempting this book. I had no idea what to do, and couldn't filter out what applied to me and what didn't; I needed a little more hand-holding than this book offered. Now that I've been through the H.O.T. and Naked series of help books (which others complain of being too basic), I'm much more comfortable with this book. I'll definitely be using it as a reference as I add dynamic content to the simple website I've built.
Overall, this book is an excellent resource for intermediate or advanced users. Beginners should shop around for other books before buying this one.Macromedia Studio MX 2004 Bible Overview

Security Log Management: Identifying Patterns in the Chaos ReviewWhen I received a review copy of Security Log Management (SLM) last month, I was eager to read it. I saw two very powerful but seldom discussed tools -- Argus and Bro -- mentioned in the table of contents. This indicated some original thinking, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, SLM did not live up to my expectations. When you strip out the pages of scripts and code and the three reprinted chapters, you're left with a series of examples of output from the author's deployment of several tools. Aside from a few examples mentioned in this review, I don't think readers will learn much from SLM.
The first problem with SLM is a lack of competent editing. Prior to publication, someone should have read the book from the reader's perspective, asking "what is the reader expected to learn from this section/chapter/book?" In other words, the editor should have asked "how is the reader supposed to implement these recommendations?" For example, Ch 2 mentions using the Bro IDS. Nothing about setting up Bro is included, which would be acceptable if a reference to an online guide or another book was given. That is not the case; the author just assumes readers know about Bro and have it running. The number of Bro users is probably less than 100. If you're one of them, you don't need to read this book!
Bro's DNS and SMTP logging modules are casually demonstrated with no regard for showing the reader how to deploy them. The Web module at least shows a sample mt.bro file, if the reader can figure out what that is or how it fits into the picture. The situation gets worse on p 101 when the author says "the SMTP module can be very powerful in helping to identify several of the 'Marcus Ranum' top mail-related statistics (Chapter 1)." Marcus Ranum is not mentioned at all in Ch 1.
SLM demonstrates two other features that are becoming increasingly common and frustrating in Syngress books, for which I detracted stars from the review. First, the editing is rough. I am perplexed by the inability to standardize on references to tools; e.g., is it bro, Bro, or BRO? Second, and far more worrisome, the last three chapters (7, 8, and 9) of SLM are reprints of chapters 6, 7, and 5 from the Feb 2005 Syngress book Microsoft Log Parser Toolkit. On the positive side, SLM did not have as many fuzzy screen shots as sometimes appear in recent Syngress books. The unexplained small, fuzzy, NetForensics screen shot on p 31 is one unwelcome exception.
In terms of stating a clear purpose and delivering material in a coherent manner, the best chapter in SLM is Ch 6 -- Scalable Enterprise Solutions. I thought the author of this chapter stated his purpose, and then delivered material that readers could use. My only problem with the chapter was reading the definition of ESM 5 times -- on pp 195, 196, 205, 237, and 238!
My favorite part of SLM was the material showing how to put Argus records into a MySQL database. This is not that common, so I was glad to see how the author implements that function.
I'm sorry I can't recommend reading SLM in its current form. Three stars means there is some value, but you could get what you need browsing in the book store. I would like to see a second edition of SLM cut out the reprinted chapters. That cuts the book down to 241 pages. If the 70 or so pages of code are moved online, that reduces the book to 171 pages. That leaves plenty of room to add material that meets readers' needs. An example of a very strong Syngress book on a related (host-based) topic is Host Integrity Monitoring Using Osiris and Samhain by Brian Wotring.Security Log Management: Identifying Patterns in the Chaos OverviewThis book teaches IT professionals how to analyze, manage, and automate their security log files to generate useful, repeatable information that can be use to make their networks more efficient and secure using primarily open source tools. The book begins by discussing the "Top 10" security logs that every IT professional should be regularly analyzing. These 10 logs cover everything from the top workstations sending/receiving data through a firewall to the top targets of IDS alerts. The book then goes on to discuss the relevancy of all of this information. Next, the book describes how to script open source reporting tools like Tcpdstats to automatically correlate log files from the various network devices to the "Top 10" list. By doing so, the IT professional is instantly made aware of any critical vulnerabilities or serious degradation of network performance. All of the scripts presented within the book will be available for download from the Syngress Solutions Web site.Almost every operating system, firewall, router, switch, intrusion detection system, mail server, Web server, and database produces some type of "log file." This is true of both open source tools and commercial software and hardware from every IT manufacturer. Each of these logs is reviewed and analyzed by a system administrator or security professional responsible for that particular piece of hardware or software. As a result, almost everyone involved in the IT industry works with log files in some capacity.* Provides turn-key, inexpensive, open source solutions for system administrators to analyze and evaluate the overall performance and security of their network* Dozens of working scripts and tools presented throughout the book are available for download from Syngress Solutions Web site. * Will save system administrators countless hours by scripting and automating the most common to the most complex log analysis tasks

Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms ReviewThis pocket book contains clear and simple explanations and illustrations. This dictionary is probably ideal for the beginning to strong intermediate user who wants to have a reference at hand which gets to the point and leaves you feeling informed. It is well cross referenced, and strong on Internet terminology. Despite its very manageable size one rarely has occasion to look up terms not described in the dictionary. If you were to have just one computer dictionary then, for most users, this would be it. Users who feel very ill at ease with computer terminology may however want to consider `Webster's New World Dictionary of Computer Terms', a equally good book which written with a slightly more experienced audience in mind.
This 'Barrons Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms' is one of the best dictionaries of computer terms I've seen on the market. But as any other computer dictionary this one is also difficult to keep current and updated. The subject changes too much to have a good guide in printed form. But I love this book very much and recommend it to everyone.Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms OverviewComputer terminology is constantly expanding, and the brand-new edition of this dictionary has been updated to keep pace with the latest important innovations in computer science and technology. Emphasis is on helpful information for non-technical home computer users. The book presents more than 3,200 computer-related terms with clear and succinct definitions. Revised features include up-to-date information on Windows Vista, networking, data storage, video, computer security and ethics, and personal computer hardware. Tables, charts, graphs, photos, and line illustrations.

Make Money Teaching Online: How to Land Your First Academic Job, Build Credibility, and Earn a Six-Figure Salary ReviewThe authors provide a nice overview of online teaching, including a lot of important considerations for job seekers (many of which apply equally well to those looking for jobs outside the realm of online education). The advice seems honest, and the authors admit that, unfortunately, there is no single source, website or service that will provide you with access to all the job listings/opportunities that are available. I didn't find anything new among the websites they suggest monitoring for job opportunities, but this doesn't mean that you won't...it may depend on how much research you've already done. Their advice on strategies for making inquiries, even when no opportunities are listed, seems reasonable and should be helpful to many.
There was a good deal of emphasis on how to use and maximize current technologies, along with accounts of the authors preferences. I had hoped there would be more focus on the actual online teaching process...e.g., tips for addressing common problems students encounter in adapting to discussion forum-based learning, etc. Granted, the advice may help you to be more organized and efficient, and therefore give you more time to think about how to manage e-classroom issues and improve your teaching techniques. Nevertheless, managing relationships with institutions, administrators and other online-teachers is covered reasonably well, but not so extensively for the online student/teacher relationship. I can't fault the book too much for these issues however, as the title is "Make Money Teaching Online," and not "How to Teach Online."
This brings up another aspect that I found troubling, in the subtitle implication that the book will show you how to "earn a six-figure salary" from online teaching. Although I don't doubt that it is possible for those who manage their time exceptionally well, I have my doubts as to whether this is realistic for all but the most committed and hardworking teachers, as well as some others who may likely be precariously overextended and therefore of little utility to their students. The advice in this book may well help online teachers to be more organized and maximize their time, possibly allowing them to take on extra work. However, is it really necessary or advisable to promote online teaching in this way? Overall, the book does makes a pretty nice guide for career exploration, especially for those who already have a little bit of classroom-based teaching experience and are interested in pursuing online opportunities. I wouldn't recommend going into this field if extremely high earnings are your primary motivator however.Make Money Teaching Online: How to Land Your First Academic Job, Build Credibility, and Earn a Six-Figure Salary OverviewDid you know you could teach from home and earn a six-figure salary? Thousands of people make a great living teaching online courses from home, and the more classes they teach the more they earn! If you want into this exciting profession, this guide will show you how to get started, find great jobs, and earn more than you thought possible.

Live Hacking: The Ultimate Guide to Hacking Techniques & Countermeasures for Ethical Hackers & IT Security Experts ReviewIt is clear that English is not the first language of the author, so some of the writing is in the idiom and grammar of his first language. It could have profited from an English editor, but the level of writing does not take any of the value from the book. I think we are all used to working with talented people who express themselves more fluently in another language, but that doesn't prevent us from appreciating the value of their work.
Here the work is an excellent and perspicacious primer at the script kiddie level for those new to hacking, but with a solid background in application and system architecture. It is an eye opener for those not otherwise engaged in security, and an entree to those interested in moving into penetration and security testing.
There are a good deal of references to outside utilities to start to build one's toolkit for all sorts of nefarious activities. There is little if any tutorial on how to use any of the tools, or how to glean the significance of the data being presented by the tool, but if the reader has the proper background, there will be a lot of forehead smacking when you see what these tools can reveal and exploit when used properly.
Live Hacking: The Ultimate Guide to Hacking Techniques & Countermeasures for Ethical Hackers & IT Security Experts OverviewDr. Ali Jahangiri, a world-renowned information technology (IT) expert, brings us the next must-have in IT training: Live Hacking, the definitive and comprehensive guide to computer hacking.Groundbreaking, insightful, and practical, this guide serves to inform IT professionals about and challenge existing conceptions of hacking, its victims, and its consequences, but with an eye to empowering prospective victims with the knowledge they need to thwart the criminal elements in cyberspace.Whether you work in a Fortune 500 company or if you're just looking to protect your home office from hackers, this book will provide you with all the information you need to protect your valuable information.Live Hacking is straightforward, easy to read, and a reference that you'll use again and again. It's the kind of book you'll want to keep in your back pocket! With a user-friendly writing style and easy-to-follow diagrams and computer screenshots.

Beyond E-Learning: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance ReviewOnce again, Marc Rosenberg shows us the way to really transform our organizations into efficient, effective knowledge-centered enterprises. He warns that e-Learning, like training in general, is often done the wrong way, for the wrong reasons. He busts myths right and left (the section on "the myths of e-Learning" alone is worth the purchase price!), and steadfastly refuses to be swept along by fads, technologies -- or even traditions of training.
What Rosenberg does is to lay out a vision of the Smart Enterprise, in which the focus is on performers rather than learners. He argues persuasively that technologies such as e-Learning, classroom learning, knowledge management, communications and collaboration technologies are best viewed not as individual technologies (or fads), but rather as complementary parts of a balanced strategy for performance improvement in enterprises which effectively translate data to knowledge to information to performance. Detailed chapters then discuss each of the key components of this strategy for performance improvement, including practical advice on how to implement them and where the pitfalls are. Examples and issue sidebars featuring luminaries in the field and corporate success stories add weight to the argument.
This is not just another "business book of the month" full of quick-fix half-truths. It is a mature, broad and comprehensive view of what it really takes to make any knowledge-intensive organization get what it needs to reach its goals. Senior line organization managers will find it essential; training managers will find it liberating and exhilerating -- or threatening. It's required reading for everyone responsible for making their enterprises smart.Beyond E-Learning: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance OverviewA follow-up to his best-selling E-Learning, Beyond E-Learning explains the most current thinking on how organizations learn and apply what they know to be successful, and explores the increasingly important role that technology plays, not as an end in itself but as a vital means to get there. The book also provides a clear path for helping to integrate learning—including e-learning—knowledge management, and performance support, and will help training professionals and the organizations they serve go beyond common myths and misconceptions about training and e-learning, focus training/learning activities directly on organizational know-how, and implement a framework that can (at last) be a catalyst for true organizational learning.

Professional ASP.NET 2.0 Databases (Wrox Professional Guides) ReviewThere are many ASP.NET 2.0 books on the market now, but they either come in two categories: The beginner who knows another server-side technology (ASP or PHP or even Java) or the advanced who wants to knows about web services or XML implementations or advanced web architecture. I have not found a book that is a solid intermediate ASP.NET 2.0 book on teaching the reader solid, real-life database applications, until now. This book fills in the gaps of so many other books out there on ASP.NET that it really should be the 2nd ASP.NET book you get. If you're already familiar with ASP.NET then this should be your first book. Because pretty much after you know how to use the basic controls and create some master pages and maybe some web parts you really know as much as the majority of the basic ASP.NET developer. This book by Thiru Thangarathinam really gives you a great understanding of "real-world" implementations of ASP.NET applications using any type of database.
Like any book, there always will be an introduction on the technology taught, so basically the first three chapters caters to refresh the reader on this technology. Chapter 1 introduces the ASP.NET 2.0 technology and terminology, the new data controls, how master pages work, and web parts framework. Chapter 2 is a very important chapter because it sets the stage for later chapters focusing on ADO.NET. You do not know how many books I have gone through trying to find a book with anything more than 20 pages on ADO.NET. It amazes me that no book (other than this one), really takes the time and explains this corroborating technology in detail when talking about ASP.NET. Yes, I have seen the pure ADO.NET books out there, but they put most of the explanation towards Windows forms, not web forms. I like how the author organizes the material and then further gives greater detail in other chapters (13 and 14). Chapter 3 introduces the reader to the updated data controls with some good detail on the advantages and disadvantages of using them, the new ObjectDataSource control, and how to incorporate the usual data-bound controls (GridView, DetailView and FormView) to them. A very good introduction to the basics.
The book (Chapter 4) then goes into using the SqlDataSource control (a good 35 pages) with topics like: Executing stored procedures and returning data, How to process return values from a stored procedure, How to handle null values, How to handle exceptions raised by the SqlDataSource control, How to detect conflict during updates, etc. Not to be overly praising this book, but I cannot remember one book that covered all these interesting topics before. Maybe I've seen this in two or three but not just one. A great chapter. The following chapter (5), the author reviews how to data bind XML data using the XmlDataSourceControl, how to filter the data, applying XSLT stylesheets, programmatically creating a XmlDataSource control, etc. A very thorough explanation of a control that is not talked about enough in other books.
One of the most interesting chapters of this book in my opinion is Chapter 6 which shows the basics (and much more) of data binding with objects. Instead of always depending on inline data source controls, you can create n-tier controls (though somewhat limited) and separate the code logic in separate classes. Though this chapter is semi-misleading because it still is talking about using a control (ObjectDataSource) in its examples. A better title would have been: Creating Object with the ObjectDataSource Control (or something like that). In any event, this chapter opens your eyes on one of the ways you can create some "real-world" development techniques.
The next two chapters (7 and 8) focus on making site wide changes to either your web pages (site navigation - SiteMapDataSource control) and how to modify existing controls like the GridView to create template columns and fields to unify your page look.
A great chapter that I automatically started reading right away was chapter 10 which focused on advanced data binding concepts such as creating a master/detail page (or parent/child), displaying selected rows in a GridView, creating custom templates in a GridView, using themes, using other controls (DropDownList) in a GridView, and extending the GridView. Lots of good stuff in this chapter that you will find on a bunch of websites or blogs or forums.
The last few chapters the author goes through creating a nice application (Rental Resevation System) and puts everything taught together. I think every book should have the last couple chapters of the book to put all the pieces together so the reader can get some ideas on how to use them in their own web applications. The code in the book is in C#, so for all you VB.NET developers you'll need to spend some time converting the code.
Apart from that this is an excellent book that teaches the reader how to really use ASP.NET 2.0 to its full potential and lots of tricks of the trade that would take you hours of searching online to find the answer. I highly recommend this book to any ASP.NET developer.Professional ASP.NET 2.0 Databases (Wrox Professional Guides) OverviewNow you can uncover the secrets behind accessing and retrieving data from a wide range of data sources such as SQL Server and XML sources. This book walks you through the array of ADO.NET 2.0 features and clearly shows you how they can be used to develop database-driven web applications in ASP.NET.
You'll first gain an in-depth understanding of the data source controls that enable data binding in the ASP.NET platform. Next you'll uncover the advanced features of ASP.NET, including site navigation, implementing sorting and paging, and editing data in templates. You'll then focus on designing transactions in ADO.NET 2.0, displaying data, and utilizing SQL Server 2005 XML.
Throughout the chapters, you'll find examples and source code (with ASP.NET examples written in C#) that you can integrate into your applications. This will enable you to leverage ADO.NET and ASP.NET features so you can easily create a scalable N-Tier web site.
Some of the topics covered include:
ASP.NET 2.0 Data Controls
Data Binding with the SqlDataSource Control, XML Data, and Objects
Selecting, Updating, Deleting Records
Programmatically Creating and Adding Controls
XSL Transformations with XmlDataSource Control
Using Generics with the ObjectDataSource Control

IPv6 Essentials ReviewIf your day to day involvement with IP consists only of managing WINS, DNS, DHCP and subnet configurations, then this book is not for you. Don't get me wrong, there are many interesting sections worth reading that go far in introducing administrative aspects of IPv6, and no time is wasted reading them. This title, however, is for those of you who daily get really dirty with IP and want to know everything there is to know about the new version, the differences between the versions, the features and behaviors of IPv6, and the new tools for configuration, management and tracking.
The book starts of with a very brief and concise history of IPv6, and then jumps right into well explained sections on packet structure, addressing, and ICMP. Each of those sections are written clearly and interestingly, make good use of figures to visually illustrate the information being discussed. Once the structure and hardware-related management points have been driven home, the author provides many chapters that serve as an excellent reference guide and will prove useful well after your initial read. Chapters on IPv6 security, QoS, Upper-layer and routing protocols proceed extended reviews and demonstrations of real-life networking design aspects, protocol version interoperability, co-existence configurations, and toped off with platform specific utility demonstrations.

Flash Professional CS5 Digital Classroom, (Book and Video Training) ReviewThis is a great resource for a wide range of Flash users. If you are a beginner, this is a great book with easy to follow step by step instructions that include full color images along with supplemental video tutorials. The book covers items from beginning animation to action script and including audio and video into your Flash projects. The instructions are written for PC and Mac.
I have used Flash since the old MX version and have gone through many upgrades; this book is good reference tool for learning the new features in CS5. I'm a working professional with no time to take a classes to keep up with the new features in the new creative suite; so this is like having a classroom at my fingertips.
Although there is a lot of helpful information on Action Script in here; this is probably not a book advanced coders would use. The CGI/Perl Cookbook with CDROM ReviewI almost didn't buy this book after reading some of the negative reviews, but decided to take a look at it after noticing that none of the negative reviews went into much detail...making me wonder if the reviews were accurate or just the result of some kind of grudge against Mr. Patchett or Mr. Wright. I'm glad I took the time to look at, and subsequently buy, the book.
With a few exceptions, I think most of the other reviews for this book do a good job of pointing out its imperfections. There are some inevitable bugs (corrected at the book's Web site), I wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't have any interest in learning at least a little bit about Perl, and it could use some additional detail on the installation process for the scripts in some places.
That's the bad news. The good news, on the other hand, is that it is an invaluable resource for learning CGI scripting with Perl, especially for anyone who, like me, likes to learn by looking at actual code and having someone explain it. I've already used several of the scripts as is, modified one other, and borrowed code from several places to start building a custom script of my own. I think I got my $40 worth the first day I had it!
Having spent some time with the book, I feel that somebody should address some of the issues brought up in some of the other "hit and run" reviews posted here. While it's true that the scripts are written in Perl 4 (which is backwards compatible with Perl 4), the authors have pointed out that this was a conscious choice on their part because Perl 4 is easier for the beginner to learn. I agree. As for the comments about security issues, I am familiar with the problems that were inherent with Mr. Wright's older scripts and these problems, as far as I can see, do not exist in the scripts presented in the book. Either Mr. Wright has learned from his previous mistakes or Mr. Patchett had a hand in removing security holes. Searching through the archives for the book's mailing list, I only came across one reported security problem in the last two years of posts to the list and a solution to that problem was promptly posted by the authors.
One last thing that I really like about this book is the support for it that the authors provided by setting up a private mailing list for book owners. Not only do members of the list help each other out with any questions about the book's scripts (whether simple or complex), but there are also some great discussions on enhancing the scripts and adding additional features to them. How often have you bought a book and been stranded without any support? That the book's mailing list is going strong two years after the book's release is a testimony to its value.
In short, I feel that this book makes a great addition to any Web developer's library, and is particularly useful to anyone developing CGI scripts of their own.The CGI/Perl Cookbook with CDROM OverviewCustom subroutine library for developing your own CGI programsLine-by-line explanations of 20 of the most popular CGI programs and subroutines that are essential to your Web siteCompatible with Perl 4 and 5Tested under WindowsR(r), UNIXR(r), and MacOSR(r)If you want to make your Web site as interactive as possible, as soon as possible, you've come to the right place! Learning WCF: A Hands-on Guide ReviewYou may want to acquire various other WCF books for depth, but if you're just getting started with WCF, this is the book you want. There isn't another book out there that compares to it. It's cleanly written and nicely balances conceptual material on service orientation with the practicalities of Windows Communication Foundation.
Many other books on WCF take the form of a "brain dump" on WCF features, or get bogged down in conceptual discussion of Service Oriented Architecture. Instead, Ms. Bustamante has a very clear, logical path from simple WCF features to more complex. You won't be overwhelmed early, but you will eventually get to most of the advanced features you'll likely need. Other books, such as Juval Lowy's Programming WCF Services (Programming), can pick up at that point for the really advanced topics.
Many of the chapters contain step-by-step labs, and you can get working end results from the author's web site. They start easy and build nicely through more complex concepts.
The sample code in the book is in C#, but if you happen to be a Visual Basic developer (as I am), you're not left out. Many of the labs and samples are also available in VB on the author's web site.
The book was unfortunately published too early to include definite coverage of the Visual Studio 2008 features for automatically generating some of the code you need to use WCF. Those capabilities are in the Visual Studio 2008 beta now and will be released in the next few months. Some of the labs could have been simplified by using those Visual Studio features. But, on the positive side, working through the labs in more detail will give you a more in-depth understanding of the subject and enable you to use the Visual Studio features more effectively.Learning WCF: A Hands-on Guide Overview
This easy-to-use introduction to Microsoft Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is ideal for developers who want to learn to build services on a company network or as part of an enterprise system. Built into Windows Vista and Longhorn, and available for Windows XP and Windows 2003, WCF provides a platform for service-oriented architecture (SOA) that enables secure and reliable communication among systems within an organization or across the Internet. With WCF, software developers can focus on their business applications and not the plumbing required to connect them. Furthermore, with WCF developers can learn a single programming API to achieve results previously provided by ASMX, Enterprise Services and .NET Remoting. Learning WCF removes the complexity of using this platform by providing detailed answers, explanations and code samples for the most common questions asked by software developers. Windows Communication Foundation (or WCF, formerly code name "Indigo") provides a set of programming APIs that make it easy to build and consume secure, reliable, and transacted services. This platform removes the need for developers to learn different technologies such as ASMX, Enterprise Services and .NET Remoting, to distribute system functionality on a corporate network or over the Internet. The first truly service-oriented platform, WCF provides innovations that decouple service design and development from deployment and distribution - creating a more flexible and agile environment. WCF also encapsulates all of the latest web service standards for addressing, security, reliability and more.

Pro Apache Beehive (Expert's Voice in Java) ReviewI have been using beehive since it was in alpha, but, I still found some parts of this book informative, enough to where I may have to change one of my applications, to make it better.
I did find that there was too much talk about BEAs product, but, for those that may be coming from that framework to beehive, this may be important.
Understanding how to use the various development tools, such as Pollinate, is useful, so their coverage of that is reasonable.
I do think that if you are looking for an intro to intermediate book on beehive this is a fantastic book.Pro Apache Beehive (Expert's Voice in Java) OverviewThe primary audiences for this book are developers and software architects who are looking to get exposure to the Apache Beehive project, and other related projects. This book covers the Apache Beehive project and projects closely related to this - such as XMLBeans, Pollinate etc. We will cover Page Flows, Controls, JSR 181 Web Services and XMLBeans technologies. The book will also talk about how these technologies are used in WebLogic Workshop, and how other IDE's are extending support for these technologies (Pollinate project from Eclipse).

Official SWiSHmax Bible ReviewI've been using SWiSHmax for at leat a year as a very serviceable alternative to the much more expensive Macromedia Flash. Web Design Studio Secrets ReviewThis book is a compilation of "real-world" techniques of a dozen "real-world" web designers. I think all the folks interviewed (that's right, the two "authors" are really just editors/interviewers) are very talented, but the information they give leaves one thinking whether they really divulged any trade secrets.
The book describes a lot of web-layout and design techniques, but unfortunately many techniques do not go deep enough. For example, I bought the book to learn intricate table layouts, but the chapter on tables just rehashes what every non-beginner web designer already knows and does. How about information on how table elements interact as well as things like merging cells and spliting cells, which can be very, very tricky to handle?
Overall this can be a useful reference.Web Design Studio Secrets OverviewDo you keep an archive of killer Web sites? You're not alone. Fifteen leading Web designers reveal the secrets behind their favorite sites in the updated edition of Web Design Studio Secrets. Featuring interviews with the experts, undocumented tips and techniques, and full-color illustrations in an oversized format, this edition also presents case studies packed with advice.
Discover what's in a winning site -- Dynamic HTML, Flash animation, and JavaScript rollovers are among the contenders. The CD-ROM contains demo software from key industry players, artwork from the book, and QuickTime interviews with featured artists. With Web Design Studio Secrets, 2nd Ed., you'll find out what the competition's been up to and how to use it to your advantage.

Designing with the Mind in Mind: Simple Guide to Understanding User Interface Design Rules ReviewDesigning with the Mind in Mind occupies a unique position in design literature, being neither a compendium of rules (do this, don't do that), nor a deeply detailed treatment of cognitive psychology. Instead, it offers accessible explanations of how the human brain affects our perceptions and behaviors, and then shows how these descriptions serve as the motivation for basic design principles.
Jeff Johnson's earlier books are more comprehensive on the design side (GUI Bloopers 2.0; Web Bloopers), but the present volume offers the reader deeper insight into the implications of a more modest sub-set of design principles. He uses bite-sized chapters and clear language to provide the psychological and biological background, often including fascinating research results. The examples he uses to illustrate his points are both compelling and accessible. (And politically correct: both Apple and Microsoft get some thumbs-down ratings.) The sections where he translates psychological observations into "computer jargon" are useful for engineers.
The droll headings and examples keep things lively. "Reading Is Unnatural;" "Our Attention Is Limited; Our Memory Is Imperfect": this sums up how I feel sometimes. I learned that the gap between what a user wants and what a user gets is called the "gulf of execution." And the usability test participant's comment, "I'm in a hurry, so I'll do it the long way." is priceless, as is the explanation: "Avoiding thought when using computers is important." (The participant suspected there might be a faster way to perform a task, but didn't want to take the time and effort to figure it out.)
Readers who implement user interfaces but don't have a background in cognitive psychology, or who have that background but might not know how to apply it to the world of user interface design, will get a lot out of this volume. Those who exist with one foot in each world will also enjoy it.Designing with the Mind in Mind: Simple Guide to Understanding User Interface Design Rules Overview

The Data Webhouse Toolkit: Building the Web-Enabled Data Warehouse ReviewWow; what a powerhouse!
The Data Webhouse Toolkit is a crisp and clear recipe for successfully realizing the unprecedented opportunity that we have to better serve our customers, made possible by Web commerce, and for promoting the assimilation of these new insights through web based presentation to our decision makers.
Both sides of this symbiotic relationship: bringing the web to the warehouse, and bringing the warehouse to the web, are presented separately, but always with a holistic sensitivity.
I was also quite impressed with the terrific balance between "earth and sky"; pragmatic issues of performance, security, and web site structures are linked with non-religious, sensible discussions of privacy, corporate responsibility, and user interface philosophy.
All in all, a wonderful contribution to the field; congratulations to the authors. Highly recommended.

Ajax on Rails ReviewScott Raymond's book "Ajax on Rails" (published Jan 2007) serves as an introduction, tutorial, and reference for web development using Ajax and Rails. It is roughly 1/3 introductory and intermediate level text; 1/3 more advanced material for developing "Ajax on Rails" applications; and 1/3 sample - life-sized - applications. (The sample applications can be downloaded from the O'Reilly site.)
The author writes that Ajax is "a really simple idea: web pages, already loaded in a browser, can talk with the server and potentially change themselves as a result." [p. 2] There is elegance in this simplicity and the book reveals a lot of the mystery around Ajax and how it works.
The author does a great job exploring the basics. You will quickly get all the motivation needed to realize why this simple idea is so powerful in practice. You'll also soon see why "Ajax on Rails" is a productive approach for developing next generation applications on the web.
One of the real strengths of this book is its many working examples. I found even tricky techniques described in ways that were easy to understand. As I read the book, I entered sample code described on each page. (Having a working Rails installation is key for getting the most out of the book. The author provides a quick installation introduction which is supplemented with URLs for added help.) It was easy to apply "Ajax on Rails" to my own project, which I worked on as I read the book.
The centerpiece of the book is Chapter 5, which covers RJS (also known as Ruby-generated Javascript.) I expected to learn about Ajax, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned about the magic of Rails and Ruby development! A number of critical technical topics, often overlooked, are also covered - including `Usability', 'Testing and Debugging', 'Performance' and 'Security'.
The author does a great job taking the reader from simple working examples to more complex applications. I certainly felt more comfortable with advanced aspects of Ajax and Rails by the end of the book. It seems to me this is the definitive text on the topic.
"Ajax on Rails" has been a joy to read and work through. It was easy to mark my learning progress along the way. The material is organized clearly. The writing moves at a great pace. Sample code explores how everything works. (I expect I'll be referring back to the extensive examples in the future.) This book is a great tool to sharpen your skills around two of the most exciting aspects of the evolving web - Ajax and Rails.Ajax on Rails Overview
Learn to build dynamic, interactive web applications using the two most important approaches to web development today: Ajax and the phenomenally efficient Ruby on Rails platform. This book teaches intermediate to advanced web developers how to use both Ajax and Rails to quickly build high-performance, scalable applications without being overwhelmed with thousands of lines of JavaScript code. More than just recipes, you also get a thorough, low-level understanding of what's happening under the hood.

Ajax on Rails includes three fully worked out Rails/Ajax applications, and quick reference sections for Prototype and script.aculo.us.
Testing lessons show you how to eliminate cross-browser JavaScript errors and DOM debugging nightmares using a combination of Firebug, and Venkman.
Advanced material explains the most current design practices for Ajax usability. You'll learn to avoid user experience mistakes with proven design patterns.

Beyond the how-to, Ajax on Rails helps you consider when Ajax is (and isn't) appropriate, and the trade-offs associated with it. For those new to Rails, this book provides a quick introduction, the big picture, a walk through the installation process, and some tips on getting started. If you've already started working with Rails and seek to deepen your skill set, you'll find dozens of examples drawn from real-world projects, exhaustive reference for every relevant feature, and expert advice on how to "Ajaxify" your applications.

SharePoint 2007 User's Guide: Learning Microsoft's Collaboration and Productivity Platform ReviewRecommended for "Power-Users," or those people that are comfortable working in Office, etc. Not for techies, per se, and perhaps a bit much for the average user. Get it for those people that will comfortably read a 300 page book on a computer program and then actually do something with it. Don't get it for those whose permissions you wouldn't dare leave without significant restrictions.
Has been very helpful to me as someone new to SharePoint. Only 4 stars because it's a bit much for the average user that we have in our organization -- I 'm not sold that I could distribute this as a User's Guide and expect increased understanding of how it works from the typical user. Perhaps it takes this much detail to present the information, but the lack of a general "how-to" or "quick-start" section makes me think that most users will be intimidated by the size and scope of the book and never crack it open.
However, from a Power User perspective, this book is excellent. The writing is clear and well-organized. I've been able to find just about everything I've needed to understand and answered most questions that have come to mind. I like how the book presents the different choices available, without shoe-horning you into the author's preferred choice. Comparing it to explanations available online, the information it typically presented better in this book.SharePoint 2007 User's Guide: Learning Microsoft's Collaboration and Productivity Platform OverviewMicrosoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is the next generation of Microsoft SharePoint technologies. Eclipse Web Tools Platform: Developing Java™ Web Applications ReviewThe reason I bought this book was so I could quickly get through some hands-on examples and see the power of WTP. Also, I thought it would be really helpful to see various web development tools through the lens of Eclipse development. After going through it, though, I'm afraid I can't recommend the book for those purposes.
But first, let me applaud the web development "wisdom" portions of the book. There are some really good "why are we doing this?" and "why are we doing it this way?" explanations in this book. Nothing to do with WTP, really, but these portions of the book were very well done.
The majority and purpose of the book are the hands-on exercises. Here's where I had some issues. Throughout the exercises, the reader is always being asked to go out and download some tool or another. I spent way too much time at update sites, trying to get the right versions of things. I would rather all of this be established up-front. Just say "if you want to do all of the exercises, download these specific versions of these 8 tools". Later, there can be some explanation as to why those tools over others, but lets get a platform that's going to do everything, and not sprinkle installation issues throughout. In fact, I think that in an Eclipse book, they instructions should say, "start with a clean install of (some version of Eclipse) and build it with (these versions of these plugins), and you will be able to do every exercise."
I know it's not the job of the authors of this book to detail a tool's installation, but a line like "check the (some tool) documentation for the exact list" is a cop out. Presumably, the authors just got done using the list, so a few words as to how to find the list within the documentation would be really helpful. With a little guidance, digging time could be reduced from an hour to two minutes.
The exercises had separate iterations, which I found helpful. I did run into discontinuities that required some improvisation, though. I'm pretty sure that nobody sat down with an empty machine, installed all of the tools and ran all of the exercises, start to finish. Or if they did, the book didn't get updated.
The book was written using WTP 1.5, EJB 2.1, etc. These are older versions than what's currently available, but it's not a problem to run through the exercises with the older versions. The problem comes at the end of the exercise when they give you a "tease" about how cool the next version is. I resisted temptation for almost the whole book but finally I grabbed some updated versions to try out the cool new stuff! Bad idea. I backed-up to earlier exercises, and although I was able to replicate most of them under the newer versions of things, there's not enough detail to get through quickly (lots of trial and error). And when I was finished, I wasn't convinced it was an optimal result. But I just couldn't sit still with the old versions when the authors were plugging the new versions.
A picky issue I have concerns references to other books. I don't think they belong in the main text, really. They wouldn't even need footnotes. Just a recommended reading by chapter would be sufficient. If you are more of an academic than someone who needs to apply this stuff quickly, maybe reading these other books might be a possibility, but I'll tell you I'm not going to make time to read a 9 year old EJB book!
I'm not sure that pitching to a WTP user and a WTP volunteer developer in the same book was really in the flow of the book. This is a picky one too, and there weren't that many pages dedicated to this topic. I suppose there's a need to recruit, it's just that I'm not sure the audience overlaps very much.
The bottom line for me is that a book should simplify the task of setting up the environment so that I can concentrate on the "why" and "how" of coding. Although I wouldn't have enjoyed the "wisdom" and other continuity the book offered, I don't think I saved any time on the development environment. I spent as much time tinkering with the development environment as I would have if I had just grabbed 6 or 8 tutorials from 6 or 8 different authors off of the internet.Eclipse Web Tools Platform: Developing Java™ Web Applications OverviewDiscover WTP, the New End-to-End Toolset for Java-Based Web Development TheEclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) seamlessly integrates all the toolstoday's Java Web developer needs.
