Web-Based Application Development ReviewThe professor requires that we complete every exercise and review question. However, the book does not provide the material to complete the exercises.Web-Based Application Development OverviewPerfect for the one-term course, Web-Based Application Development present an introduction to concepts, theories, practices, languages, and tools used to develop applications for the World Wide Web. It explores the important fundamentals of Web applications while also introducing the programming and technology necessary to put these ideas into practice. This book goes beyond presenting the languages and tools found in other texts by including networking, architecture, security, reliability, and other important concepts and theories necessary for today's web applications. Ideal for novice programmers looking to master the basic skills critical for a successful career in web development, Web-Based Application Development provides broad coverage of the topics coupled with hands-on, active-learning exercises in one, must-have resource.

Designing with the Mind in Mind: Simple Guide to Understanding User Interface Design Rules ReviewDesigning with the Mind in Mind occupies a unique position in design literature, being neither a compendium of rules (do this, don't do that), nor a deeply detailed treatment of cognitive psychology. Instead, it offers accessible explanations of how the human brain affects our perceptions and behaviors, and then shows how these descriptions serve as the motivation for basic design principles.
Jeff Johnson's earlier books are more comprehensive on the design side (GUI Bloopers 2.0; Web Bloopers), but the present volume offers the reader deeper insight into the implications of a more modest sub-set of design principles. He uses bite-sized chapters and clear language to provide the psychological and biological background, often including fascinating research results. The examples he uses to illustrate his points are both compelling and accessible. (And politically correct: both Apple and Microsoft get some thumbs-down ratings.) The sections where he translates psychological observations into "computer jargon" are useful for engineers.
The droll headings and examples keep things lively. "Reading Is Unnatural;" "Our Attention Is Limited; Our Memory Is Imperfect": this sums up how I feel sometimes. I learned that the gap between what a user wants and what a user gets is called the "gulf of execution." And the usability test participant's comment, "I'm in a hurry, so I'll do it the long way." is priceless, as is the explanation: "Avoiding thought when using computers is important." (The participant suspected there might be a faster way to perform a task, but didn't want to take the time and effort to figure it out.)
Readers who implement user interfaces but don't have a background in cognitive psychology, or who have that background but might not know how to apply it to the world of user interface design, will get a lot out of this volume. Those who exist with one foot in each world will also enjoy it.Designing with the Mind in Mind: Simple Guide to Understanding User Interface Design Rules Overview

Designing Interfaces ReviewThis book is different from most books on designing user interfaces since the ideas are presented as design patterns, much as you would see in Gamma's classic book on the subject had it been adapted to human-computer interfacing rather than programming. Each of the patterns and techniques presented in this book are intended to help the reader solve common design problems. Patterns and techniques are presented for web sites, desktop applications, and everything in between such as web forms, Flash, and applets. The user interface design patterns presented in this book are intended to be read by people who have some knowledge of UI design concepts and terminology: dialogs, selection, combo boxes, navigation bars, whitespace, branding, and so on. The book does not identify many widely-accepted techniques such as copy-and-paste, as it is assumed that you probably already know what this is. However, some common techniques are described here to encourage their use in other contexts -- for instance, desktop apps could make better use of Toplevel Navigation -- or to discuss them alongside alternative solutions. If you're running short on ideas, or hung up on a difficult design problem, skimming this book and its design patterns may help you produce a good solution.
Each pattern is presented with an image showing a possible implementation, a "Use When" section, a "Why" section, and a "How" section with very high level tool-independent implementation instructions. The patterns are organized into groups by function - organizing content, getting around, organizing the page, getting input from users, showing complex data, commands and action, direct manipulation, and stylistic elements.
I would highly recommend this logically structured book to anyone from programmer to graphic artist who might be involved in user interface design.Designing Interfaces Overview
Despite all of the UI toolkits available today, it's still not easy to design good application interfaces. This bestselling book is one of the few reliable sources to help you navigate through the maze of design options. By capturing UI best practices and reusable ideas as design patterns, Designing Interfaces provides solutions to common design problems that you can tailor to the situation at hand.

This updated edition includes patterns for mobile apps and social media, as well as web applications and desktop software. Each pattern contains full-color examples and practical design advice that you can use immediately. Experienced designers can use this guide as a sourcebook of ideas; novices will find a roadmap to the world of interface and interaction design.

Design engaging and usable interfaces with more confidence and less guesswork
Learn design concepts that are often misunderstood, such as affordances, visual hierarchy, navigational distance, and the use of color
Get recommendations for specific UI patterns, including alternatives and warnings on when not to use them
Mix and recombine UI ideas as you see fit
Polish the look and feel of your interfaces with graphic design principles and patterns

"Anyone who's serious about designing interfaces should have this book on their shelf for reference. It's the most comprehensive cross-platform examination of common interface patterns anywhere." --Dan Saffer, author of Designing Gestural Interfaces (O'Reilly) and Designing for Interaction (New Riders)
