CodeIgniter 1.7 professional development ReviewI purchased this book because it was just recently published and I figured it would have the most up to date information on the current version as well as have current insights into the best practices for using the framework. By the end of chapter two, I was baffled. The writing style was unusual, superficial, and there were quite a few typos. At first I thought it was just a bad editor, but then I "Googled" the author. To my surprise, he's only 17 years old. The book states that he's had 5 years of experience programming in PHP. I'm not trying to knock this young author, after all, I wasn't programming PHP at age 12. But what was PACKT thinking publishing a programming reference book written by a 17 year old? Once the age thing came out, the writing made a lot more sense. The book supposes that the reader is versed in PHP and HTML. While some of the more complicated Codeigniter functions are glossed over with one sentence paragraphs, there's a whole page explaining what a carbon copy and a blind carbon copy are in an email. This is only one of many examples that made me question the competency of the material being presented. The book even mimics the Codeigniter style guide in the "correct," "incorrect," style of writing as well as the order in which the techniques are presented. There is nothing in this book that you can't find in the user guide or the many tutorials online.
I feel like I was duped by PACKT publishing and I'll certainly do more thorough background checks before any further purchases from them. A return is in my future... As for the Author, I certainly commend you. I certainly wasn't thinking about writing books at that age, but unfortunately, I think you were let down by your editors who should have provided a bit more guidance like "get some real life programming experience, then we'll publish." For everyone else, I suggest you spend some time in the native Codeigniter user guide.CodeIgniter 1.7 professional development OverviewThis book is a practical guide that takes you through a number of techniques. ASP.NET 4 24-Hour Trainer (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThere are no easy roads for those wanting to get up to speed on new technologies. Many books and websites promise instant gratification, or instant knowledge, via some "easy way." "Stay young with seal fat soap! No effort required!" Or "Learn through osmosis! No thinking required! Just vegetate and let the knowledge seep in like jellyfish slime!" The electromagnetic spectrum bursts with such promises and audacious claims. So who can blame anyone who becomes skeptical at the subtitle "24-hour trainer?" And it doesn't refer to making gelatin spitballs, but to learning ASP.NET. So does the skepticism hold? Can the clueless and nescient learn this complex technology in a mere 24 hours by using this book?
Well, yes and no. Despite Wrox's new rock star theme, this book will only get you so far. And where exactly the 24-hour time frame comes in remains a little mysterious. Nonetheless, the book has plenty of value and will teach anyone quite a bit as long as expectations stay clear. For starters, this book, and accompanying DVD, emphasize process over fundamentals. Each chapter comprises a defined task. For example, the chapter "Master Pages in Web Forms" covers just that and not in great detail. Given this approach, beginners may sometimes find themselves wondering what just happened. Those with some experience or knowledge will probably benefit more.
The book sticks to a pattern. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the topic and ends with a "try it" section that steps through a specific task. Unfortunately, the introductory material often provides a glimpse of the technology. For instance the web.config file receives a lot of attention in this book, but nowhere does the book delineate the file's purpose in any detail. As an introduction this approach works great to a point. But as a way to means to solidify a foundation or to obtain a thorough understanding of the concepts in general it often falls flat. Still, for those who learn best by process, this book could work wonders. And it could serve as a great supplement to more detailed reading. Give it a prolonged glance to see if it works before buying.
The book also doesn't reveal everything in its title. Apart from ASP.NET, the book also covers the relatively new MVC (Model, View, Controller) framework. Those who don't possess the fundamentals may get lost quickly. MVC represents a fairly significant departure from the standard ASP model and the book's cursory introduction to the concepts may not suit everyone. Plus, most of the chapters have "A" and "A" sections that alternate between ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC. For example, Lesson 19A, "Displaying Data in Web Forms" flows into Lesson 19B, "Displaying Data in MVC." For some, this may just be too much at once. MVC could probably stand a "training" book of its own with a more detailed introduction to its core concepts. jQuery and AJAX also appear in a later chapter and though readers will get waked through some examples of how to use them, the core concepts again receive only a speck of detail. The W3C tutorials may fill in some of the gaps for beginners.
Still, the book has value. Those needing a refresh in the "how to" and not on the fundamentals may find this the perfect resource. Or someone looking for just a taste of ASP without committing to learning the core concepts may also find this a perfect page flapper. More experienced programmers may walk away from this book and be able to start cranking out (simple) websites. Beginners, at least not all of them, may not be so lucky. Absolute beginners may need to find other resources to really understand the construction of a real world ASP.NET application. And no matter how one uses the book it will very likely involve far more than 24 hours of interaction. Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewIf you are looking for a gentle overview of the ASP.NET MVC Framework, this is a solid book. If you are looking for a "Pro" book, there are better books available.
Over a third of the book is the Nerddinner walkthrough which is an excellent introduction to the ASP.NET MVC Framework. There are plenty of pictures so you don't lose your way, and the step-by-step instructions really help the beginning ASP.NET MVC Developer better understand the code, how it works, and why it was coded as such. Nerddinner will always be that beginner example we talk about and I love having it in book form.
The rest of the book starts to systematically look at the various pieces of ASP.NET MVC - Routes, Controllers, Views, and Filters. You basically get a very nice overview of each with a deeper-dive now and then. As a beginner book, I think the deeper dives are nicely placed and fine for someone who wants to use the MVC Framework out-of-the-box. However, for those who want to become an expert, extend the framework, or create an opinionated MVC Framework, you will be disappointed that the book does not go deep enough.
There are some smaller chapters on AJAX, security, unit testing, Webforms vs. MVC, and using Webforms with MVC. Again, good beginner material that gets your feet wet for more advanced and challenging books. The chapters entitled, Webforms vs. MVC and Webforms with MVC, feel like Microsoft product positioning, but they are still useful in understanding their thoughts ( whether you agree or disagree ).
Lastly the book has some quotes and personal thoughts by various ASP.NET MVC team members sprinkled throughout. I personally love those little gems as it gives you insight here and there into the development process and the decisions that had to be made. Reminds me of the book, Framework Design Guidelines. It humanizes the book, making it fun.
In conclusion, I think Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is a solid beginner book. I think it would have been better named "Beginning ASP.NET MVC 1.0," but I have been using the ASP.NET MVC Framework for a long time, too.Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewThis book begins with you working along as Scott Guthrie builds a complete ASP.NET MVC reference application. He begins NerdDinner by using the File->New Project menu command within Visual Studio to create a new ASP.NET MVC Application. You'll then incrementally add functionality and features. Along the way you'll cover how to create a database, build a model layer with business rule validations, implement listing/details data browsing, provide CRUD (Create, Update, Delete) data form entry support, implement efficient data paging, reuse UI using master pages and partials, secure the application using authentication and authorization, use AJAX to deliver dynamic updates and interactive map support, and implement automated unit testing.
From there, the bulk of the rest of the book begins with the basic concepts around the model view controller pattern, including the little history and the state of the MVC on the web today. We'll then go into the ways that MVC is different from ASP.NET Web Forms. We'll explore the structure of a standard MVC application and see what you get out of the box. Next we dig deep into routing and see the role URLs play in your application. We'll deep dive into controllers and views and see what role the Ajax plays in your applications. The last third of the book focuses entirely on advanced techniques and extending the framework.
In some places, we assume that you're somewhat familiar with ASP.NET WebForms, at least peripherally. There are a lot of ASP.NET WebForms developers out there who are interested in ASP.NET MVC so there are a number of places in this book where we contrast the two technologies. Even if you're not already an ASP.NET developer, you might still find these sections interesting for context, as well as for your own edification as ASP.NET MVC may not be the web technology that you're looking for.
It's worth noting, that ASP.NET MVC is not a replacement for ASP.NET Web Forms (aka just "ASP.NET"). Many web developers have been giving a lot of attention to other web frameworks out there (Ruby on Rails, Django) which have embraced the MVC (Model-View-Controller) application pattern, and if you're one of those developers, or even if you're just curious, this book is for you.
MVC allows for (buzzword alert!) a "greater separation of concerns" between components in your application. The book goes into the ramifications of this, but if it had to be said it in a quick sentence: ASP.NET MVC is ASP.NET Unplugged. ASP.NET MVC is a tinkerer's framework that gives you very fine-grained control over your HTML and Javascript, as well as complete control over the programmatic flow of your application.

Pro ASP.NET MVC 3 Framework ReviewI feel that this book has been rushed out to be the first MVC 3 book on the shelf. It is full of errors and not just typo's. These include errors in the code it's self! I have spent several hours wasted trying to work out why my code doesn't work only to find out that the book it's self is wrong!
The graphics included in the book don't always represent the results of the texts (for example screenshots containing tests that you aren't told about and even the down-loadable source code doesn't include!).
The use of some code is even incorrect in some cases! These are only small things that I have seen so far (half way through the book) for example parameter orders incorrect in the tests that do pop up errors when they should but the errors will be slightly wrong causing more wasted time trying to work out what is wrong!
The only reason I am still plodding though on trying to learn from this book is because I have already purchased it, there are no alternatives and deadlines are looming.
I purchased the ALPHA of this book from Apress directly when it was available and have been sending errors via there site for months but NONE of the errors I submitted have been corrected in the final release and have heard nothing from Apress.
If you are trying to learn MVC I suggest finding another MVC 2 book that you know is good and then when you have a grasp of MVC 2 topping up your knowledge on the changes (Razor etc...) in MVC 3 from other sources (or maybe any other books that will be published shortly).
Having said all that if you don't mind all the rushed error prone work and just want to get into MVC 3 right now (as at the time of writing this is the ONLY MVC 3 book out there) getting this book and spending the time to read and follow it (which isn't easy) you will get there or at least to a place that you can ask the right questions to find the answers and understand other examples on the net.

ASP.NET MVC 1.0 Website Programming: Problem - Design - Solution (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis book builds on existing material from Marco Bellinaso's book, ASP.Net 2.0 Website Programming, migrating the implementation of the BeerHouse eCommerce web application to using more recently released Microsoft technologies such as ASP.Net MVC 1.0, LINQ to SQL, and SQL Server 2008, and updating the text to explain concepts behind the new implementation. As the authors indicated in their introduction to ASP.Net MVC, one thing developers will gain with using this newer technology instead of classic ASP.Net 2.0 is finer control over the web application's client-side code. The flip side to this is that .Net developers, who so far have been relatively shielded from having to know too much about html, css, or javascript because of conveniences offered by classic ASP.Net 2.0, may now have to know more about these technologies in order to develop the presentation logic for their web apps. It's not surprising, therefore, to see a lot more javascript code in the revamped BeerHouse web app. So if you're trying to get a feel for what a non-trivial ASP.Net MVC application might look like and you don't mind reading through the javascript code, the BeerHouse web app presented in this book might be useful to you.
In my opinion, however, despite its title, this book doesn't delve deeply into ASP.Net MVC per se. Compared to Steven Sanderson's book, Pro ASP.Net MVC Framework, this book only provides a superficial introduction to the new framework, and only demos a limited subset of features. With a little more effort and for pedagogic reasons, the authors could have worked into the BeerHouse application showcase examples of how to implement, say: server-side data validation (e.g., use of IDataErrorInfo), or security features such as more advanced model binding that prevents the editing of certain properties, and Cross-Site Request Forgery prevention through the use of the Html.AntiForgeryToken() helper, etc. For a more thorough but still accessible tutorial on ASP.Net MVC, you should get Sanderson's well-written book if you haven't.ASP.NET MVC 1.0 Website Programming: Problem - Design - Solution (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewPerfectly suited to the innovative Problem ? ASP.NET MVC Framework Preview (Firstpress) ReviewThe first 60 pages were like a roller coaster ride! I knew the end was near but i wanted more.
The last pages which are not directly about MVC framework, are still fascinating. LINQ is explained gradually as an evolution of c#. I would like to have a C# book by Steven.
I wish a better alternative to data modeling emerges, as the current xml or decorate-your-code-with-junk approaches don't seem very elegant to me (compare to model classes in Django for example).

Professional ASP.NET MVC 2 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewStarting with the ViewModel section of chapter 1, there is plently of errata which leaves you wondering. This is confirmed on the books official forums filled with people asking for answers.
In short, the book tries to use "TryUpdateModel" which doesn't work because you aren't using the Dinner model any more, but rather the DinnerFormViewModel. You have to use one of the overloaded TryUpdateModel methods in order for it to work. You can visit the book's forums for more details.
There are also a lot of errors in the map section of chapter 1 -- mainly in the ids you have to select using jQuery (#Dinner_Address instead of #Address, for example). You also don't get the CSS to position the map correctly -- you must make your own css to float the map to the right and position it.
EDIT: More errata: The C# code for finding the nearest dinners within 100 miles is not present in the book or the downloadable code. You get the sql code. However, like another function that they give you, you need SQL and C#. You can get the C# code at the forums.
Overall, it's a good introduction; however, the various errata in the advanced topics of Chapter 1 leave me doubting the quality of the rest of the book. ASP.NET MVC Framework Unleashed ReviewDisclosure: I do not own this book, but the review is based on reading the first 4 chapters from my Safari subscription.
This book is a really, really great starting point for learning ASP .NET MVC. An important caveat is that you need to do the NERD DINNER tutorial first before ANYTHING! I'm real particular about my learning style and had baulked at the mere 10 reviews the book had received, but really, don't let that dissuade. This is a great book and the author breaks things down into easy to understand chunks. I will say that he isn't as detailed as the Nerddinner tutorial in explaining the Visual Studio features for adding Views & Controllers, but the description's for doing so should suffice.
Some people may not like that the code examples are in both C# & VB .NET; however, I don't mind this. It certainly adds to the size of the book, but I haven't found many books going through this stuff and showing VB .NET code, so that can only be a plus. Another gotcha is the book uses the Entity Framework for data access. I don't mind this since I haven't had exposure to it, but I think that might turn off some people. To be perfectly honest, I don't think there's a book that explains the basics of ASP .NET MVC in conjunction with NHibernate or ORM's outside of LINQ to SQL or Entity Framework. I did look at ASP.Net MVC in Action on Safari and I can tell you that it is definitely not a starter book; however, if you want exposure to using third party frameworks with ASP .NET MVC, that might be your book.
Okay after making to about chapter 19, I've come back to this review and bumped it down to 4 stars. My main bother here is that there isn't a published errata and their needs to be one. Thankfully, this doesn't come into play until Chapter's 17 & 19. The mistake made in both chapters is they start using classes without A) defining the code for the class b) without mentioning the class anywhere outside of a code example that assumes their prior creation C) a & b.
This isn't a huge deal, just download the book code and know that you will have to copy the code for the following classes:
UnleashedBlog.Models.BlogEntry (Chapter 17)
UnleashedBlog.Models.BlogServiceBase (Chapter 19)
UnleashedBlog.Tests.Factories.ControllerFactory (Chapter 19)
The last 2 really ticked me off because there is absolutely zero mention of their creation until they are magically used in code. Despite this, they aren't complicated classes and you can still understand what they are doing without the book having to elaborate.
Despite it all, I still recommend this book. Programming Microsoft ASP.NET MVC ReviewFirst, let me say that generally I love Esposito's books and articles. His book on AJAX in Microsoft was the best on the topic. So, I expected a lot and ended up quite disappointed.
I am technical manager, and my developers have experience with MVC 1. We are all "fan-boys" MVC and for me it is the first time I actually enjoy development in Microsoft technologies.
Now, about the book. Who is this book for? The new MVC developers? It doesn't have any examples that one can build upon and learn the skills. For experienced developers? It doesn't go into the advanced implementation solutions; and the philosophy behind MVC only takes you so far. It goes to great (I would say, excruciating) details into what is the foundation of MVC design - but misses what *is* actually the MVC design. For example, the chapter on the controllers lists the role of controllers, motivation behind them, and anatomy of them. It also lists the interfaces that controllers implement. The bottom line - it convinced me what a great thing a controller is, but gave very little guidance how to use it!
It may be helpful for the instructors that can use some information in the classes. Or, it is very useful if you plan to join Scott Guthrie's team and develop MVC 3. But for real-world developers, architects, or technical managers - the value is questionable.Programming Microsoft ASP.NET MVC Overview

As someone who's already worked on a project with the first version of MVC a couple of years back, this was a good refresher and a quick way to get to know all the new MVC3 features. This includes: Razor for Views; Validation mechanisms are much easier now, there used to be way too many options to pick from; jQuery Templates; NuGet etc.
Favorite Chapters:
- Ch.7 on Security, it's very well written with quick and easy to use solutions. Great stuff! MVC 1 & 2 developers need to fix a security hole in the default authentication template if you've used it.
- Ch.12 on Testing, good examples and valuable tips towards the end.
Least favorite Chapters are:
- Ch. 11 on Dependency Injection, it's extremely abstract and that's perfectly fine for the first section given the design pattern discussion, but it becomes harder to follow subsequently with not even a single attempt to show an IoC container in action with some real code. It just doesn't seem to accomplish its intended goal, unfortunately this chapter is poorly done, needs better examples and better ways to describe the problem it's trying to solve. It's a shame since this is a key concept for building complex MVC solutions.
- Ch. 9 on Routing, it's definitely more of a "under the hood" reference type chapter, doesn't mean it isn't important, just boring to read through.
Some chapters are missing the full source code but you could just google/download the MVC Music Store application which has most of it. Also, some examples include NuGet packages which is pretty convenient to load and run within Visual Studio 2010. Another really minor issue is that chapters probably need a bit more accompanying graphics/images which help set the context than just code/text for long stretches such as the AJAX chapter.
Worth mentioning that the book feels more like a reference book rather than a walk-through with step-by-step instructions so some sections however essential can make you want to skip some pages.
Overall, the book does what it's supposed to as far as new MVC 3 features; it will not however prepare you enough for any Production ready solutions i.e. solution architecture is MIA.
I would've liked a chapter on how to structure enterprise applications which as you'll find out are quite different from a base application like MVC Music Store. A couple of sample approaches would go a long way. CMS Made Simple Development Cookbook ReviewGoldstein takes a lot of the mystery out of programming in CMSMS. With some luck, your needs for a modification of the basic CMSMS package will be readily implementable using tips from the book. As the recipes make clear, all this sits atop PHP code. Knowledge of PHP is a prerequisite for understanding most of the recipes. However, a quick glance at these shows that the PHP code examples are mostly self explanatory in terms of their semantic value, even if you don't know PHP. Which by the way is a good instantiation of why the language has proved so popular.
The other requirement is to understand HTML, since several or many recipes revolve around using PHP to construct HTML snippets. Luckily, here too HTML is a simple language to pick up.
The book divides its recipes into 3 groups - User Defined Tags, Tags and Modules. At the highest level, the most important lesson is which of these you should pick to handle your problem. So pay careful attention to the first chapter, which is essentially a flowchart of how to make that decision.
Of these groups, a module can be the most complex, at least as evidenced by the book's choices of recipes. The modules often tackle processing of data. Here is where the complexity can arise. CMSMS uses a free relational database management system like MySql or PostgreSql. What eventuates is that module coding needs an understanding of SQL grammar. Unfortunately, this can be somewhat verbose, shall we say. But if you plow through the SQL parsing, you can write the appropriate deconstructionist code to get at the various data fields.

Programming Microsoft ASP.NET 4 ReviewProgramming Microsoft ASP.NET 4 is a well-written guide to the architecture and implementation of Microsoft's ASP.NET platform. It would be most useful to experienced ASP.NET developers as it does not cover the basics of ASP.NET, and does require the use of a modern Microsoft operating system (Windows 7, etc) to perform any "hands on" activities.
Developers who are currently using "classic" ASP.NET techniques may wish to read this book for a view of at least one view of the platform's future, that is a movement away from forms and toward model-view-controller (MVC). The author lays out his reasoning in a logical manner and explores the justifications as to why Web Forms, while not quite dead yet, may not be the foundation you should choose for your next project.
For those who are happy with Forms/classic, the book still provides good, in-depth walkthroughs of the anatomy and function of ASP.NET. Architects would probably find this a must-read, and it could be useful to technical project managers who deal with Microsoft platforms.
Dino Esposito is, as usual, an engaging author who has a knack of making this material, which can admittedly be dry, into an enjoyable read. I have several of his earlier works and usually retain them as reference materials after the first read; this book should follow that pattern as well.

Book review - "Pro ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010, by Matthew MacDonald, Adam Freeman and Mario Szpuszta. ISBN-13: 978-1-4302-2529-4 - Published by APRESS
Hi all, this is my book review of the new "Pro ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010 book". Since .NET framework 4.0 went into production in June 2010, I was pleased to see that an ASP.NET book targeting the .net framework 4.0 is out for publication. Also, I was pleased to see that the samples deal with C#. I believe that C# will be the dominant language in the .net framework arena for the foreseeable future. As one who programs in both C# and VB.NET, I would have to lean towards C# as the language of choice. We can see this trend also in the fact that most of the latest programming examples out there related to .NET framework are written in C#.
In general, we don't see a whole lot of new features in ASP.NET 4.0, but there are supposed to be improvements in performance and stability in ASP.NET 4.0.
New features worth mentioning include:
*Session state compression for out of process session state service (such as the venerable adStateServer sql server storage for session state)
*ASP.NET MVC - an alternative way (other than classic webforms way) to separate your website logic into three logical parts (Model, View and Controller). This MVC pattern has been around for awhile now, but it is now officially adopted into ASP.NET 4.0. Some people love the MVC model and believe it simplifies while others believe MVC just adds extra effort.
*ASP.NET Dynamic Data - A way of quickly generating data-centric websites that focus on viewing and editing database records. The pages are populated by inferring the schema of the data model (Entity Framework or LINQ to SQL) It is based upon LINQ (language integrated query). The dynamic data model is supposed to also allow more advanced customizations, than you may have seen with this type of "easy, code-generation of database data for maintaining websites" in the past.
As I read through this book, I realized that ASP.NET 4.0 is still based upon technologies that have been around for years now. ASP.NET 4.0 is a very mature and powerful technology. Much of the content of this book covers topics that would be covered in earlier versions of ASP.NET. This is not a criticism at all because the authors of the book meant to give a "complete description and understanding of ALL of ASP.NET" and not just coverage of the new features in ASP.NET 4.0 (of which there are relatively few new features as I previously stated). This book is almost 1600 pages long and has excellent coverage of the diverse topics that fall under the umbrella of ASP.NET.
This book is a complete treatise on ASP.NET topics such as:
*Web forms
*Server Controls
*User Controls
*An explanation of the ASP.NET processing pipeline and how they work including HTTPMODULES.
*An explanation of ASP.NET state management (remember HTTP is a stateless protocol, so ASP.NET has including things like View State, Session State and Application State as an abstraction of state that helps developers build web applications).
*ADO.NET - how to talk to databases with the .net framework - also explaining the use of dataset objects in disconnected architectures
*Explanation of databinding (especially in terms of the objectdatasource/sqldatasource controls)
*How to use data centric server controls (read up on gridview /formview /listview /detailsview) server controls.
*An examination of LINQ (which is a relatively new topic to the .net framework and has to deal with being able to query and iterate through collections of data in a common way using a language known as LINQ (language integrated query)
*How to use caching to solve issues such as increasing website performance and scalability of your web applications.
*How to deal with XML and the many ways of getting at xml (XPATH/LINQ/XSL etc.)
*How to write and use USER Controls which are a way for developers to easily reuse "nuggets" of programming and presentation layer by encapsulating the content into a user control A user control can then be "dragged" onto a page design surface and be used over and over within your website.
*Themes and Master Pages cover the ways that ASP.NET can enable reuse and standardize the "look and feel" of a website.
*Navigational Controls - (recommended readings are about sitemap /menus /multiviews)
*How to manage and deploy websites, whether it be simple xcopy, or use of web deployment packages).
*A very detailed explanation of ASP.NET security, including forms authentication and ssl. What I particularly appreciate about this book is it has very detailed information about the built-in security features that come with ASP.NET (these security features first came out in ASP.NET 2.0). This includes the ASP.NET membership api/forms authentication /role providers /profile providers and how to check principal permissions. There are more than 40 detailed pages on how to build your own custom membership provider which basically extends upon the provider model provided in ASP.NET. In my opinion, out of the box security concepts as provided in the membership/roles/profile providers are one of the most powerful and time-saving measures in ASP.NET. For example, I am building a custom "membership" portal that builds upon the standard forms authentication/membership provider/role and profile provider. This stuff is powerful and gets you up and running very quickly, much more quickly than if you had to roll your own authentication/authorization/user profile programming code. Believe me, I've been there and done that (wrote my own custom security code), but in today's fast paced software developer world, it's nice to be able to piggy back on ASP.NET security because it's powerful, well designed and easy to implement.I think this area is one of my most favorite topics of this book, because it has so much useful information here.
*The book goes on to deal with nice chapters on creating ASP.NET server controls, ASP.NET server controls are a way for programmers to build their own control that can be placed into the visual studio toolbox and used as a software component. Those of you who are familiar with Infragistics/Telerik and Component One know that server controls are powerful ways of allowing programmers to take advantage of nice web control suites to build very nice web interfaces. The companies mentioned above have written their own server controls that are available for programmers use. Microsoft also supplies ASP.NET server controls out of the box (textbox/gridview) etc.In this book, the chapter shows you the API that Microsoft provides so that any programmer can build their own server controls.
*How to deal with graphics and gdi programming as pertains to the ASP.NET world. Things like using pens/brushes as you would see in any type of graphics programming.
*JavaScript and Ajax get good treatment in this book as well, Ajax is an important technology in today's web environment for enabling very rich, responsive web user interfaces.
*Web parts are covered also in this book which is a neat technology, CMS systems such as SharePoint, make heavy use of web parts, so this is a must read for serious ASP.NET developers who also may want to leverage SharePoint and build custom web parts.
*MVC/Silverlight and dynamic data round out the rest of the book.Silverlight is an exciting technology that I expect to really get into in the near future, Silverlight 4 just came out and I want to see if we can build real business applications (LOB) with it. Dynamic data I have high hopes for, I haven't had a chance to play around much with it (Deadlines, deadlines), but I hope to see what dynamic data can do for me, this is one of the newest topics out in ASP.NET 4.0.
WHEW! This book has a LOT of useful information for any ASP.NET developer, even though I own at least 4 other ASP.NET programming books, I would definitely rate this book as a "must-have", it is chock-full of information that developers can use and take advantage of. As a full-time programmer, the more productive you can be, the more versatile and valuable you can be (not to mention, the more income you can generate). I highly recommend this book for those of you who use ASP.NET, it is very complete and the authors did a very commendable job detailing the broad and diverse topic of ASP.NET programming! With this book, you can tell a ton of effort was put into it. Note that there is also a "beginning ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010" book also published by Apress, I haven't had a chance to look at it, but the "pro" book that I am reviewing here certainly qualifies as professional level, because of the depth and breadth of its content!
One thing the book DOES lack, however is a sample website or "final project" that I have seen other ASP.NET books provide. I downloaded the source code for the book and it has samples for every chapter in the book. This book rocks though for sure!!!
With ASP.NET technology, it is a proven platform for building web applications and Microsoft has built something very powerful over the years. ASP.NET (and in general the .net framework) along with the excellent Microsoft Visual Studio programmers IDE is, in my humble opinion the best in class web programming environment out there. You can't go wrong by choosing ASP.NET as your web development platform of choice.

Programming Razor ReviewThis book is about Microsoft Razor view engine. If you do not know anything about Razor view engine then this is the right book to start with. It covers fundamentals of Razor view engine - how it works, what can be done, how can you use it, etc. Only this book does not cover other view engines like Castle and ASPX. In my opinion there should be at least one chapter about other view engines. However, I am working with Razor engine this book was useful because I learned about lot of useful tools , for example, RazorGenerator, PrecompiledMvcEngine, aspnet_compiler.exe, etc. Only sometimes when reading this book is feeling that something could be explained a little better. For example, there should be a little bit longer explanation about MVC Areas for novice who is not familiar with MVC it would be difficult to understand it. One of the things which I really liked about this book was RazorPad. RazorPad - a light-weight WPF application or online application for learning Razor syntax.Programming Razor Overview

Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework ReviewI read this book about a week after reading the wrox-published "four talking heads" book by Guthrie, et. al.
It was like night and day. This book is, simply put, perfect. I could not put it down. Sanderson does such a magnificent job at taking the reader from "Hello, MVC" all the way through fairly advanced application concepts that I have a whole new threshold for what a "good" programming book is.
Throughout the book, he does a wonderful job of keeping true to good, solid principles of design, using proven patterns of Test-Driven Design, Domain Modeling, and Dependency Injection; but (to borrow another reviewer's term) never from an "ivory tower" perspective. His approach is always well-grounded in real developer concerns and application needs.
I sincerely hope this isn't Mr. Sanderson's last programming book.Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework OverviewThe ASP.NET Model-View-Controller (MVC) Framework is a widely anticipated extension and improvement to the way that ASP.NET applications are architected and developed. Beginning Rails 3 (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewEvery Rails books needs to set the stage, to "explain the rules" so to speak, since using Rails is quite different from other "traditional" approaches of web development (LAMP, etc.). Beginning Rails 3 sets the stage nicely, and continues to deliver throughout the entire text - at least, until it comes to getting your Rails app on the web.
The first three chapters follow the typical pattern of a Rails book, explaining the origins of Rails, why it's good, how to install it, and then setting up a very simple web app so the reader can see how easy it is to get Rails up and running. One thing I liked in particular was in Chapter 1, where the authors stressed the importance of being open to the "Rails way" of doing things. This was a nice touch, as there's a good chance the "Rails way" is different from what the reader is expecting, especially if they have some experience developing with PHP.
From there the authors continue to get more in-depth on the various aspects of Rails, focusing on Active Record (the database aspect of a web app) and Active Pack (the "bridge" between the user interface and the database) for the first half of the book. Readers who prefer the programming aspect of development will enjoy these chapters, though they do get a bit dry to read in some places, with some sections (throughout the book actually) being virtually nothing but code for several pages.
One key thing to note at this point is that beginning with version 3, Rails is much more modular than before. This makes it much easier to "take out" things you don't need, or switch certain portions for something else (like using HAML for building your HTML templates instead of eRB, or DataMapper in place of ActiveRecord). It would have been great to see examples of how to do this, rather than just mentioning it's possible, but then that might push this beyond a "beginner's" book.
Web designers more interested in the user interface aspects of a web app will enjoy Chapter 8, which goes over Rails' Ajax support. I would have preferred this chapter to be a bit more in-depth, but I like the fact that the authors covered how to switch from the built-in Prototype library to jQuery, which is more common and better suited (in my opinion) for Rails development.
Chapter 9, "Sending and Receiving E-Mail" was a welcome surprise. In previous Rails books I've read (Simply Rails 2.0 and Foundation Rails 2) I don't remember this being mentioned - but it's such a common requirement for web apps, that almost every Rails developer needs to learn how to do this as some point.
It seems that many Rails newbies (like myself) are also somewhat new to programming in general, and we often don't quite grasp the importance of testing a web app to make sure it works properly and can handle errors and unforeseen difficulties with grace. Chapter 10 stresses the importance of testing a Rails app, and points out that testing is something you're probably already doing to some degree (though perhaps just by hand on an "ad-hoc" basis).
Rails has a very systematic way of testing, and this was a good (though hardly exciting) overview of how to test the various aspects of the web app you've been building (if you've been following along and typing in code as you've been reading - you can also download the code rather than type it all out, if you prefer, and links are provided at the beginning of each chapter).
I was a bit surprised that Internationalization was covered in this book, as it's something most people (in English-speaking countries at any rate) don't usually think about until after their app has been deployed. Fortunately, an entire chapter is devoted to Internationalization, and this was a really nice touch.
It's a very rare Rails developer that doesn't, at some point, want to add some sort of plugin to extend the functionality of the web app they're building. Chapter 12 goes over how to do this, even covering how to create and add your own plugin to Rails.
Probably my biggest expectation for this book was Chapter 13, which goes over deploying a Rails app to the web. It's just not simply uploading the finished files to a server (I wish!), and I have yet to come across a book that really nails this well, so that it's easy to understand for "traditional" web designers. Unfortunately, this chapter is lacking. It does cover Capistrano and Phusion Passenger, which really help ease the deployment of a Rails app to the web, but instead of also explaining a bit about server configuration (for those who want or have to do it themselves) there is instead a section preaching the benefits of outsourcing this to your hosting company, recommending you stay away from cheap Rails hosts (which I agree with, to a point) and instead use an experienced Rails-specific host.
I understand the reasons behind the authors' choice in this matter, as it's simply too much to expect new Rails developers to become experts in server configuration, but for companies or independent developers on a shoestring budget, high quality (read "expensive" here) Rails hosts may not be an option. I personally wanted to know how to do this, even if I decide not to do so with a real web app. As such, having more in-depth information about Rails deployment is, in my mind, necessary in a book like this (even if the reader decides not to do it themselves). This is a serious omission, in my opinion, and mars an otherwise great book.
Beginning Rails 3 is a great resource for those who are new the Rails, covering most of the key aspects of Rails 3 web development. Unfortunately, it falls short when it comes to actually explaining how to get your Rails app out into the world.Beginning Rails 3 (Expert's Voice in Web Development) Overview

Introducing Microsoft WebMatrix ReviewFirst of all, WebMatrix & Razor are cool, a big step up from the old ASP.NET. You can write server side C# or PHP, use SQL Server Express (free) or MySQL. The WebMatrix tool makes it easy to develop and publish small to mid sized web sites.
And this is the first WebMatrix book.
The book takes a tutorial approach, and you create web sites from chapter one onward. It's a collection of features and a tutorial for each one.
It was written during the beta, but the tutorial worked (mostly) fine for me. The examples show off many of the features of Webmatrix, but can be inconsistent. Often, but not always, the new code you need to add is in *bold*. But sometimes it's just buried in a sea of plain-text.
There is no guidance as to when to use, or not use a feature. Some problems I had were of the underlying technology, not the book, but the book doesn't warn you of any pitfalls. For example, Chapter 4 "Using Images in WebMatrix" is all about the wonders of the WebImage helper object. Took me hours to figure out why some of my image files worked and some failed. Silently. Turns out WebImage is case sensitive, and if you point to a file named .jpg it will work, but if you point to a .JPG (like all my images from my digital camera) it will fail.
Using the Facebook Helper also could use some guidance. After searching the FB dev forums, I found you need to have the browser set to accept cookies from 3rd parties or the Facebook Helper object would fail. At least this helper object gave an error message.
This is a 324 page book, including a nice index in the back. The book feels smaller, probably because of all the big screen shots. It does not take long to go through this book.
The book assumes you know C# and HTML, but little else. A seasoned web developer can skim some of the "how a web site works" bits. You don't write any Javascript in the tutorials.
I do wish there was some "How" to use WebMatrix, but that is beyond this first book. It's worth getting, but I have the feeling once bigger books come out, I won't be returning to this.Introducing Microsoft WebMatrix Overview

Agile Web Application Development with Yii 1.1 and PHP5 ReviewSometimes I read a tech book there are a few annoying errors that detract from the overall experience, but this one, the errors are so many and so egregious that it makes it impossible to follow along unless you are already a very highly skilled developer and can 'guess' what was meant.
For example, the author uses the InnoDB engine for his code examples, but fails to declare this on several of his schemas. This causes big problems as mySQL ships with MyISAM as the default database. Normally, schema should explicitly set the engine, particularly if you're not going to use the default!! Perhaps InnoDB is the default on his database, but the reality is that most people will probably be learning this framework against mySQL. Hopefully you're experienced enough with databases to catch this and figure out why the code doesn't work. Once you get past this 'gotcha', then you have to deal with code errors in almost every other example. It completely undermines my confidence in this writer's ability to teach the framework and make for hours of frustration as you try to track down why things aren't working. The writer clearly is an expert in Yii, but he's not much of a writer or instructor.
Then there's the general spelling errors. It seems to get worse as the book goes on. I've got 10 bucks that says this book was turned in by the author and published without any editorial review or proofreading at all.
Perhaps it's just me, but the Chapter on User Access Controls seems to be missing an entire section that would make the example work. He builds some tests, then builds the code, but doesn't cover getting the initial state set for a user with 'admin' level access. Another word, you run the code, but there's no 'user' setup who can then access the admin level pages he just spent time testing and developing ??? Perhaps this was another example of where the author suggests that you try and figure x, y or z out on your own as an "exercise".
Here's an example of some inelegant prose; how many typos can you find in this short block (I cut-and-pasted it directly from the pdf version):
One other small change we made as to add a simple link from the project details page so we could access this form form the application. The following line was added to the project show.php view file's list of link options:
[]
This gives us access to the new form.After that, I quit the book. Perhaps I'll be able to learn it better online.
I've read quite a few tech books over the years and this is a close contender for "Worst Book Ever". Unfortunately, it's the only book specifically on Yii right now. Hopefully the framework will continue to grow and somebody will write another one.Agile Web Application Development with Yii 1.1 and PHP5 OverviewThis is a step-by-step tutorial for developing web applications using Yii.
