CIW:Server Administrator Study Guide Exam 1D0-450 (With CD-ROM) ReviewI realize other reviews have slammed this book, but I didn't think it was too bad at all. I just took the CIW 1D0-450 exam today and passed with a 93% on the Internet Systems Management section and a 73% on the Advanced Systems Management section (83% overall), and this book was the only study material I used. Granted, this book could have used a little more thorough explanation of the advanced topics, and there were some silly mistakes in the testing material, but overall it covered 98% of everything I saw on the exam. The 1D0-450 is a fairly tough test, and this is not a entry level "For Dummies" type of book. I have also recently completed the Master CIW Designer cert., and this is the most difficult CIW test I have taken to date. Just be sure to read, and re-read, and re-read again every section, and take all the practice tests. Flash 4 Bible ReviewReading through these reviews, you can clearly see a pattern of complaints. Having used the Flash 4 Bible for 6 weeks now in developing a multimedia online training course (in concert with several other Macromedia programs), I would like to respond to some of these complaints.
Complaint #1. There is not enough material on ActionScript. This is the great weakness of the book, and it is indeed crippling. If you want to learn about ActionScript, you will have to go to online tutorials at flashlite.com, webmonkey.com, flashplanet.com, flashaddict.com, or flashkit.com. This is especially frustrating because Macromedia's Flash User Guide is weak in this area, so there is considerable demand for some good documentation on ActionScript. Since the Bible series claims to "do it all," this volume definitely gets heat for this one.
Complaint #2: There is virtually no documentation on FS scripts. FS scripts were the predecessor of Flash ActionScript, and my understanding is that Macromedia implemented ActionScript in Flash 4 to make scripting interactivity easier than the complex FS Scripts. We could thus forgive the authors for not including much documentation on FS Script--but only if they had at least covered ActionScript with any credibility. Nonetheless, for most new Flash users, the lack of FS Script documentation probably doesn't matter as much as the lack of ActionScript documentation.
Complaint #3: The authors spend too much time discussing using Flash with other programs. This complaint I would have to disagree with. Flash, like PageMaker, Quark Xpress, Acrobat PDF, and any web authoring program (e.g., Dreamweaver), is a package that assembles content developed in other applications for final publication. That is, you will pull in drawings and storyboards from vector drawing programs (FreeHand, Illustrator), image editing programs (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro), and word processors. I think it is both helpful and totally appropriate to have extensive documentation on working with these kinds of programs. And I think most people wouldn't mind this coverage so much were the book not lacking in precisely the area that we all hoped for the most: coverage of ActionScript.
I have spent time with perhaps 6 Flash 4 books, and sadly, this one is the most comprehensive and the most useful overall. All of them cover basic illustration and animation in great detail--but so does Macromedia's Flash User Guide. My Flash Bible has seen a lot of use--but so has my printer, as I have printed out several tutorials from the Flash sites listed above. ASP.Net Programmer's Reference ReviewThis book is terribly written, and in a lot of cases, misinformative. The author does not offer any insight to the various uses of properties and methods of the object structure, but simply states fundamental effects. Examples are the explanation of the HTMLButton.CausesValidation property... there is no explanation as to what is going to be validated when this is set TRUE.
Other serious oversights are misreferences. In one class he discusses the OnServerClick method, in other classes he refers to it as ServerClick.
Although the book is intended to be a programmer's quick reference, there is very little use of knowing the names of classes, properties, or methods if you are not given any explanation as to the effect such items will have in your programming.

Microsoft ASP.NET Coding Strategies with the Microsoft ASP.NET Team (Pro-Developer) ReviewWith ASP.NET 2.0 right around the corner, there's a new book out that will give a needed edge to your arsenal of tools with which to draw from for ASP.NET 1.x. While many in the ASP.NET community will be sticking with the first version of Microsoft's web development platform for some time to come, "Microsoft ASP.NET Coding Strategies with the Microsoft ASP.NET Team" provides a deep, insightful view of architecting, configuring, managing and extending next-gen web applications with ASP.NET.

Still, there are several code examples, albeit in the guise of snippets and clips. Many of those used are cited as being taken straight from the many free ASP.NET projects, like the ASP.NET Forums application, the ASP.NET application blocks and many of the utilities currently used on www.asp.net.

My biggest - and only - criticism of this title is, ironically, its title. Despite what the heading implies, it's not one of those books with hundreds of free scripts that you can plug into your site. It's not a gallery of free code you can rip-and-insert into your site like was available in so many ASP 3.0 books. Rather, it provides a fresh, welcome discussion on the inner-workings and processes of ASP.NET behind-the-scenes. And for that, it's very valuable.

I find it to be a great resource for experienced ASP.NET developers as an architectural guide, more than a code reference, which the title would lead one to believe (at least that's the first impression I got when I bought the book).

The book's high points are Rob Howard's outstanding comprehensive discussion of caching (which is one of the better dialogues available in print), as well as talks about working in the HTTP pipeline, developing custom HTTP handlers, and developing custom server controls.

It also seems that most of the chapters are taken straight from, or based upon, content that already exists on MSDN. While this seems to be a point of contention for many developers, I find that it's nice to have these helpful articles aggregated in a single bound collection.

Inside Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 (Inside (New Riders)) ReviewI am a Dreamweaver user who was asked to explore the potential of UltraDev in its ability to connect our existing web site to a database. Although I am very familiar with Dreamweaver and HTML, I had no clue when it came to databases or ASP. Enter Inside Dreamweaver UltraDev 4.
I took me about a week to get through the entire book and walk through all the tutorials. By the time I was done, I had a site that was connected to a database and allowed me to add, edit, and update records. In addition, I learned the basics of password protecting sites and adding dynamic images and text to my pages. Now I can take what I learned and expand our existing, boring pages to include dynamic content. Just an FYI...until about a week ago, I didn't even know what dynamic content was
About the only downside to the book is that it shows you **how** the program works and how to build a dynamic site using UltraDev, but it doesn't focus on breaking down the code (in my case VBScript). This is probably beyond the intent of the book so I'm not counting off .

Inside Coldfusion MX ReviewOver the last few years, I've worked with ColdFusion sporadically and without great success. Everyone said how easy it was to learn ColdFusion, but I just wasn't getting it. I got a copy of this book as soon as it came out and let me tell you, the first few chapters cleared up all of the confusion for me regarding CF.

Java Programming 10-Minute Solutions ReviewThis is a great book for someone who needs to find solutions to problems quickly. However, don't consider buying this book unless you have a good knowledge of Java to begin with. I specifically worked through all of the solutions in the File I/O, String Handling, XML Processing, Distributed Programming Using XML, Searching and Sorting, Threads, JDBC Database Access, and Ant, JUnit, and XDoclet sections. All of these sections provided me with good information about topics needed while working on a recent project.
All of the code worked as advertised. You wouldn't believe how often I run into code that doesn't work. Mark did a great job telling me how to reuse code in other applications. The solutions actually did take around 10 minutes each to read. Too often I've found that 10 minutes often means a day or more. I found the coverage of topics was great. I especially found the coverage of search techniques helpful. In short, I got a lot more out of this book that I have some other books on the market. The Official XMLSPY Handbook ReviewI don't feel tempted to write a review very often but for this book I do. It is a warning: Don't buy this book. There are an awfull lot of better books about XML, XML Schema's and XSLT around (try Wrox) and the book doesn't tell you anything about XML spy (which is a great product!) that you can't find out with an hour or so of clicking around and trying the features.
More important: It doesn't even mention the more interesting features of XML Spy that do seem to require a manual: Extending the product by writing macro's for instance or this Authentic stuff.

Engineering Distributed Objects: Second International Workshop, EDO 2000 Davis, CA, USA, November 2-3, 2000 Revised Papers (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) ReviewThis book covers an area of increasing importance, ie the design and implementation of modern distributed object systems. It combines details of the technologies, eg. CORBA and COM, with design notations and issues, eg. UML and scalability. As such, it fills a very important gap in the market and deserves to be successful. I know of no other book that tackes these issues in the same coherent manner.
I have been teaching these topics for the last three years on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and have had to use a variety of different literature resouces. This book now provides me with an excellent core text - well written and presented, with good explanations of complex issues.

Apache Server 2.0: The Complete Reference ReviewThe trouble with this book can be summed up in the Introduction:
This book is aimed at two groups of people: Apache administrators of all levels and Apache module authors. This range of readers means that the book must cover concepts both having to do with programming and with basic configuration. I hope I have accomplished that task in a way the book is useful to both sets of people.
That's a monumental task to take on! Writing a book for each group separately would each take a tome the size of this book. Instead, we cram two subjects into one book without increasing size and get this -- a book that covers everything but in missing detail.
The first the sections start off on the right foot -- an introduction to Apache and how the web works; a comparison of Apache 1.3 and 2.0 with other web servers; configuring, compiling, and installing Apache; and a module overviews, including the MPM modules that handle pre-forking and threading.
After that, the details begin to slip. Sure, you can get Apache up and running with this book. Heck, you can even get it to pull off some nice tricks with this book. It's not until you start dabbling in these "nice tricks," though, that the incompleteness of this book shows through.
For example, while explaining virtual hosting, the author goes over two ways to go about it -- the one-by-one method and mass virtual hosting using mod_vhost_alias. However, he only briefly mentions using a third method, mod_rewite, which is admittedly more complex. The author also spends some time going over security and logging issues with virtual hosting, but at 21 pages, the chapter covering virtual hosting leaves a lot to be desired.
The same goes if you're interested in programming for Apache. Actually, I'm taken aback as to the amount of coverage the author devotes to the programming of Apache. Not because the author goes into greater detail on how the Apache code works than I care to indulge in (which is to say, any). It's because of it's interspersal throughout the book. In the end, this upsets both sets of people -- the administrators that don't want to program and the programmers that don't want to administer.
I guess one could say that this is a "complete reference" in that it covers every aspect of Apache. However, I'd rather have a "complete reference" that covers its subjects in full detail.Apache Server 2.0: The Complete Reference OverviewThis text gives coverage of configuring, installing, administering, securing, and debugging Apache Server 2.0. It contains information on running Apache on different platforms, including Windows NT and 2000, as well as UNIX-based systems such as Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris; and Mac OS X.

Java(TM) Class Libraries Poster, Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition, version 1.4, The (3rd Edition) ReviewI see things well on posters; I like to sit back and view information on a wall a few feet away, or even up close, and get a larger / bird's eye view of things. Some posters are very good and helpful -- these two, however, simply aren't very helpful [I'll rate the other separately].
For me, the benefits of posters is to be able to see a set of data in one place and take in the whole picture. But with these, it's not a beneficial way to view them, because really it's just a bunch of information that's been put on a big piece of paper -- and although some folks might think "well that's what a poster is"... it's not. It should be able to convey something more.
For example, whether this is liked or not, the following poster:

is one way in how data & information can be put together to be viewed so that some people can gain more than they could from the information in sections.
The information here is actually best viewed on a monitor. It doesn't help with uses, examples, and for the most part it doesn't help with parent hierarchies. It is nearlyimpossible to memorize all the available class libraries and applicationprogramming interfaces (APIs). This poster gives the serious Java programmera four-color, visually appealing, and comprehensive view of the classes in theJava(tm) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition, version 1.4.The poster is thorough. There are a total of 357 public classes and interfaceswithin the 21 packages in this first release of the platform. For each package, allof the classes and interfaces in the package are displayed, showing theirrelationships to each other. If a class subclasses a class from another package orif a class implements an interface from another package, these "foreign" classesand interfaces are also shown. Foreign classes and interfaces are marked insuch a way as to easily determine which package they actually belong to. Alsoindicated is whether each class is final or abstract. The end result is anincredibly unique and supremely useful poster that Java programmers will beproud to hang on their walls.

Interface Design: Effective Design of Graphical User Inferfaces ReviewI wrote this book in 2000 as a tour through the elements of digital user interfaces - software, hardware, the Web, cell phones, point-of-sale machines, etc - and covered some basic design issues for students devising Web site interfaces.
As the other reviewer on this page correctly notes, software elements such as Yes/No/Cancel are ridiculously simplistic. But they are crucial to the concept of interface design: should we automatically accept Yes/No/Cancel as the best way of presenting choices or does its usability depend upon the wording of the question in the dialog above the buttons? Why are there only three options? Why can't each button be worded differently? Why does the dialog have to look like it does? Why do the buttons appear in the way they do? By contrast, hardware devices rarely give you this three-choice set, often offering a completely different approach to usability. But why? Is the determining factor to do with user input methods or legacy conventions of user interaction with different kinds of device?
You get the idea. The limitation of the book is actually its age. I wrote the book when Mac OS X was still in beta, digital widescreen TV in Britain was only just arriving, and colour-screen cell phones were extremely rare (camera phones did not exist at all). Amusingly, I even refer to BlackBerry devices in the 'future technology' section, along with the usual living-room videophone and 'Internet fridge' nonsense!
As such, the book is a snapshot of interface design at the very beginning of the century. It's a history book, if you like. But many of the issues it covers continue to be valid today, and the design examples in the back section are still inspirational (not always in a positive way!) for modern design students.Interface Design: Effective Design of Graphical User Inferfaces Overview

It succeeds very well in this, and will prove to be an excellent reference for a variety of readers. Managers can gain an overview of the reasons for and promise of portals; system architects will find out how they integrate with data warehouses and information management systems; and everyone will learn that the notion of a "Knowledge" portal requires more than has been stated in the many loose uses of the term so far.
In fact the book is a good explanation of the author's approach to knowledge management, which is the most rigorous and logically sound approach that I know of. He takes the ideas of "knowledge", "knowledge processing" and "knowledge management" very seriously, and this book will give the reader a good understanding of this. He then analyzes portal technology in the light of this view of KM, and specifies what a portal must be in order to allow the implementation of true, "third-generation" KM.
As such the book is different, and possibly unique, both in the depth of its analysis, and the clarity of its logic.
I can thoroughly recommend this book to those want to understand portals, and those who need to understand KM, particularly those who have become cynical about it. Oracle8i: A Beginner's Guide ReviewI found this books useless. There is much better books out there, even if you are a new beginner. In this book there is not any word about Java infrastructure of Oracle 8i, which is the main difference between Oracle 8i and Oracle 8. On the other hand, it tries to explain you some java related tools. No figures, charts or graphis of any sort to make the understanding easier. I could not find any correlation about how the authors organized the chapters and the chapters' contents. The author's style is very irratating as he continously praises Oracle. Oracle this, Oracle that..etc, without giving a solid information. Shortly this books is bad and do not waste your money. You can find better information in Oracle white papers or documentations which are free at technet.oracle.com and at oracle web site.
If you are a new beginner, buy dummies series.
