The information in this book had all the vocabulary needed to use the program, working examples that will exceed the next version release, and saved my frustration with the Visio software. I watched all those Visio Guy films at Microsoft's website, and I thought they were great and imaginative, yet when I wanted to work with Visio beyond playing with its interface, those videos weren't of much help. This book opens the software secrets up quick, and gets you into production. Agile Project Management with Scrum (Microsoft Professional) ReviewOur organization recently implemented Scrum, and although the
Beedle/Schwaber book was great to get us off the ground on Scrum
theory, we immediately had many questions once we actually tried to implement it in real life projects. I agree with the notion that Scrum is conceptually easy to understand, but actually quite complex to implement correctly. The scrum forum has been helpful, but we really needed a cohesive reference of situational problems. The APMWS book really hit the nail on the head and delivered what we needed the most: a practical guide to Scrum with anecdotes and "what happens if..." situations from real world Scrum implementations. This came just in time for us, and we are feeling more confident for our upcoming certification class.
The appendices in the back are also very helpful. The "Rules"
appendix is perfect as a quick introduction to Scrum for new Team
members and Product Owners. It's actually quite detailed for being such a short appendix.
Also, for newbies the three main Roles are very nicely explained. We had some misconceptions that were immediately addressed by this book.

Developing Effective Websites: A Project Manager's Guide ReviewIf you are managing small-to-medium web projects, or are managing vendors who are implementing a small-to-medium site, this is an ideal book. What I like about this book is that it sticks to the basics and doesn't pretend to be a "silver bullet" or "killer methodology".
What it does do is step you through web site development, starting with the most important part: requirements, and from there through the development and management of a project plan. Here is where the book shines because the project planning starts with a work breakdown structure (WBS), which is essential to a viable project plan. Only after the WBS has been developed does the author cover scheduling. This is a refreshing change from other "project management" books that [erroneously] jump right into scheduling. Another strong point is the author covers cost estimation in a thorough manner.
This book is also complete from a workflow perspective in that roles and responsibilities of the project team are defined, and all project milestones are covered, including testing and maintenance, which are not always covered in web project books in any great detail. I especially like the way the author addresses contractor/customer relationships. If you are reading this as either a customer or a consultant this part of the book will prove valuable for advice and insights. Another key point that I like is the iterative development approach taken. This reflects the way most web projects proceed, although some books portray such projects as a linear waterfall process that leads to false project assumptions.
This book and "Web Redesign: Workflow That Works" by Kelly Goto and Emily Cotler complement one another. I recommend getting both if your budget allows it. If you are faced with a large-scale web project this book may not fit your needs as well as "Web Project Management: Delivering Successful Commercial Web Sites" by Ashley Friedlein. Regardless, this book is well written and is a refreshing change from many I've read because it's based on tried and true project management principles that have been closely integrated into the workflow of website development.Developing Effective Websites: A Project Manager's Guide OverviewIs your website project out of control?Every website project needs a manager. Head First Web Design ReviewAs a member of its target audience, I found this to be a tremendous book. It's perfect for web developers who know (X)HTML and CSS but are clueless when it comes to the design process itself. The only thing to beware of is the large number of errors that should have been caught in the editing process.
I do a decent amount of PHP/MySQL and Javascript/AJAX work, so I have to already know how HTML & CSS operate. I don't need to be told what a div element is, or what a style declaration looks like. I am the least creative person on the planet, though, and this book feels like it was written specifically for me. I can't think of higher praise than that. It takes you through the process of building a site - not just what a good webpage looks like, but how a whole site is structured and fits together and ways to make that come alive through design. I never felt confused, but never felt like the authors were moving too slowly, either.
This is my third book by Head First (I also have the HTML and AJAX books), so I already knew that I liked the Head First writing style - perhaps a little light on technical side, but the lessons get driven home. The reader simply retains material from these books, and that is tough to find in most technical books on the market.
Again, the only thing to watch out for is the sloppy editing; there were a few too many editing errors for my taste. I still gave the book five stars, though, because it was just that good.Head First Web Design Overview

Adobe Flash Platform from Start to Finish: Working Collaboratively Using Adobe Creative Suite 5 ReviewI have read all the way through this book, and I found this book to be the best resource on Flash development to date. That doesn't mean it is perfect, but it is the only book I have found that even tries to adequately detail "workflow" for interactive application assembly of any kind.
Most developers already know HOW to do things, they know the software interface and they know the hands-on part of Flash use -- plus there are any number of resources teaching which button to click or what code to type for anyone that wants to be a developer. Unlike more mature media, like Print, which has had a defined workflow for a long time, Interactive is relatively new, more sporadic and its workflow ad hoc. This book goes a long way to to resolving those problems.
This is an exploration into a Flash project's life cycle from creative brief to programming. Its not going to describe how to create an event listener or a conditional statement in ActionScript 3. Nor is this book going to explain rigging for IK animations. But it will show you how to manage these kinds of projects, people and most importantly, the expectations of all of the above.
The book is divided up into Overview, Planning, Design, Development, Build/Release and Maintenance. It covers the whole Adobe product line, including Flash Professional, Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst. In addition, there are some other CS5 Suite integration as well. There's a good introduction including Adobe Workflow Lab and DACI (Driver, Approver, Contributor and Informer). Concepts are general at first, defining stakeholders and scope of projects. But this book quickly evolves into specifics of iterative and Extreme Programming as it relates to Flash as well as preferred design patterns like MVC for AS3 OOP. This book is an excellent resource for management unfamiliar with these terms as well as developers unfamiliar with project management of interactive production. In my experience, that's every developer and manager.
As an Adobe Certified Flash user, this book completes the overall picture for me, providing context for all the bells and whistles in latest edition of Flash. Considering the production of applications in Flash can deploy across a variety of devices, its indispensable. You can even develop now for the iPhone with Adobe's Packager for iPhone, since Apple has had to lift its restrictions. Although anyone serious about iPhone development should probably learn Objective C -- the Quark of programming languages.
