Objects to Components With the Java Platform ReviewAt the time it came out (2000), this was probably a four- or five-star book. It's still a competent textbook for a one-term course in Java and object oriented design. The pace is brisk, starting with Java language features and OO basics. It covers applets, elementary AWT UI, threads, JDBC, networking, and Java Beans. Every topic gets the same thorough treatment: discussions and examples, with numerous problems and mid-chapter reviews.
I guess the promise of "components" left me disappointed, though. Despite being half the title, it's only about 30 pages out of nearly 600 - the brief chapter on Beans. Even that is so short that it barely addresses basic beans, let alone the additional complexities of Enterprise Beans. And, even within the Java 1.2 framework (current back when this was written), RMI, servlets, and other models could have enhanced and broadened the discussion of Java components.
It's still a serviceable course text for a fast-paced, one-term course in Java and OO. Just don't expect much from the component discussion.
