Active Directory: Designing, Deploying, and Running Active Directory, Fourth Edition ReviewThis is a truly excellent book. Written by the person who headed up the largest Windows 2000 deployment (in Europe) to date, it not only covers the 'What' of Active Directory, but the 'How' and 'Why'. This includes not only the technical aspects of Active Directory but also the operational and business aspects that are all too rarely addressed in this kind of book, but that absolutely have to be dealt with if any kind of ROI is to be realised from this technology.
If that isn't enough, the last part of the book shows how to roll your own scripts for adding users, querying the Active Directory etc.. Or as I prefer to think of it, repetitive tasks that you don't really want to go near the gui for. I have this book down as having 585 pages of solid fact, no filler, all examples kept short and focussing on the point in question.
This is an example of how technical books should be written - lots of hard fact with unambigous examples in a well-written style. If you have to go near Windows 2000 & the Active Directory (and I suspect one or two people may be in this position) then buy this book.Active Directory: Designing, Deploying, and Running Active Directory, Fourth Edition Overview

Mastering Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 ReviewI must say, unlike many people, I was not as excited about the Mastering Windows Server 2003 book (though I liked the SP1 and R2 Update Edition book very much). I felt the 2003 book was lacking that insightful depth that I so enjoyed when I first encountered Mark's books back in the 1990s. I assumed it was just that I knew much more about Windows environments now, but this book proves that was not the case.
I've been working with Windows Server 2008 R2 since the first TechNet Beta was released back in, I think it was, January of '09. I spent hours diving into the new features and then did the same with the release candidate and the RTM. However, I've had this book for less than two days and I've already encountered several excellent sections that clarified poorly written Microsoft documentation or provided new thoughts for the same technologies Microsoft covers in a different way.
The team for this book seems to have changed from the excellent team that delivered the Server 2003 Update Edition book and I was a little concerned when I saw this; however, my concerns were not well-founded. This team may be the best that Mark has ever put together for his Mastering series of books.
Now, for those who've worked with Windows Server 2008 over the past couple of years, you will love the small but important sections all through the book that cover "New... in Windows Server 2008 R2". You can replace the ... with Active Directory, TCP, DNS and many more. The point is that the book works for those completely new to Server 2008 or 2008 R2 and it helps those who've worked with Server 2008 find those nuggets of newness related only to Server 2008 R2. One of my favorite features, which the book addresses, is the new ability to use Server Manager to manage remote Windows Server 2008 R2 machines.
I can give this excellent book no less than five stars. Way to go team Minasi! This series is back on track.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Unleashed ReviewAs usual we are always expected to know the new stuff and support it but no one wants to ever pay for training so what to do? I did a lot of scouring for a good server 08R2 book and it was slim pickings. Most books were out of date (R1) or simply geared toward studying for a test which does me little good in defining an AD upgrade road map and figuring out what to define for app server standards. I finally found this on amazon and relying on reviews and the TOC i opted to get it. Its a fantastic resource but huge so expect to be doing some serious reading. What I loved is that right off they talk about what is new in R2. This is a big help. Lets get features out of the way immediately. The rest of the book is structured logically but is easy to jump around in since life does not follow a table of contents. I strongly recommed this if you support windows servers in a real world environment. If you are looking to take an MCSE test, then stick to the exam cram for those since this will be way over kill for you more than likely. A+ to the authors.Windows Server 2008 R2 Unleashed OverviewWindows Server 2008 R2 Unleashed is the most comprehensive and realistic guide to planning, design, prototyping, implementation, migration, administration, and support.
