UML 2 Toolkit ReviewUML, the Uniform Modeling Language, is a huge specification. It actually comprises a group of specifications covering thousands of pages. Without some guide, a beginner can get lost in the forest of detail.
This book is the best guide I've seen so far. It covers all of the major kinds of graphical notation - over a dozen - that UML uses for describing systems and software. The first part book follows a clear, logical path from the original exploration of requirements, into basic, static design of program elements, and on to the dynamic behavior of software and the systems built around it. UML isn't just about software - it's about meeting real human needs using complex systems.
One strength here is that the authors show Java-based examples of wht the UML notations really mean. That has always caused difficulty for beginners - which Java language constructs are the 'right' representations of UML specifications? The answer has ambiguities, but the authors show some ways to create a proper correspondence.
The later parts of the book describe successively higher levels of system representation, as supported by the UML. They show how design patterns look in proper UML - a real help, since the best DP books predate modern UML. The authors also demonstrate how UML can be extended to meet new needs, or to represent fine, application-specific levels of detail.
I admit to mixed feelings about extensions to the standard. In some ways, extensions are necessary. I have found even basic class diagrams desperately in need of extension - when they address my program design issues at all, they immediately lock in details of implementation that should have been left open. On the other hand, an extension to the standard is, by definition, non-standard. Extensions almost automatically violate UML's goal of uniformity and shared ways of expressing shared concepts. Perhaps I need to see more real-world examples of successful extensions.
The final chapters of the deal with the fundamental concepts needed to make UML work properly: the Model Driven Architecture and broad script for using UML within that paradigm.
Although the authors do a good job of presenting the material, this part of the UML spec is where I have my strongest reservations. I'll agree that analysis and architecture are different from programming, and probably deserve different ways to express their concepts. I certainly agree that all of the different ways to view a system need coherency and cross-validation. My notation should be my servant, though, not my master. Forcing myself into the mold of a person for whom UML works is painful and unproductive. If the notation is so complex that it can only be used within elaborate tool suites, I wonder how well it will accept the sets of tools that I already use. Can I really get UML tools to integrate with Mathematica, Java, Word, VHDL, and source control? If not, then they do not really work with my system. I know, my combinations of tools are idiosyncratic, but other development environments use tool combinations at least as complex. Finally, if UML requires such tool support, does it really meet my needs as a mere human?
UML is real, it has wide value and acceptance in the industry. This book, from the OMG press, comes straight from the UML standards body. I recommend it as a good way to start with most of UML's features, almost an index to the reams of OMG standards documents. An Introduction To Enterprise Architecture: Second Edition ReviewThis book provides a cursory treatment of a deep subject. At barely 250 pages of main body text--and they are small pages at that, set in a generous type--there is no room to go into detail on much of anything. You will learn, perhaps, what a dataflow diagram or an IDEF0 frame is, but you will certainly not learn how to create or manipulate them, or much about how to use them, or their relative strengths and weaknesses, beyond the casual sentence or two about any given model in this book. And, look, I love diagrams, but it seems like every third illustration is this book is a reprint or an absolutely trivial variation on the author's "EA Cube" overview diagram. You can see it on the front cover--it's not exactly as complicated as the human nervous system. Once or twice would have done it for me. Shallow? I slosh through deeper puddles on a rainy day.
But the shining feature of this book is the "case study" of a company adopting the particular flavor of Enterprise Architecture that Scott Bernard is trying to sell, something called EA3. He follows this ficticious company through the entire course of the book, costing a substantial fraction of the already meager pagecount. What would you expect such a case study to entail, dear reader? Maybe some process diagrams, data entity schemas, architecture documents...you know, an ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE for the example company? Sadly, the joke is on us. None of this is forthcoming. The "case study" consists almost entirely of descriptions of meetings where everybody talks about the wonderful things they're going to do with this new enterprise architecture, followed by more meetings where everybody congatulates each other on the wonderful things they've just done thanks to enterprise architecture. Like the rest of the book, there is just no "there" there. Actual models? No room! Sample documents? No time! Any business school or MIS student who tried to hand in this pollyanna sales pitch as a "case study" would only get an F because the grade scale doesn't go to "G."
Perhaps the only value in this book is that, if read critically, it will teach you a great deal about why "Enterprise Architecture" has such a poor reputation in certain sectors of industry today. I really think that a lot of EA is about self-aggrandizement on the part of IT professionals, who think the entire business should revolve around their pretty diagrams and three-ring binders. We in the IT community need to get our minds right: we are here to support and enable the business, not impede it or, worse, subordinate it to its tools. If something like Enterprise Architecture is good for business, then we need to find ways to do it that don't involve saying to the people we are supposed to be helping: "Wait! Stop what you're doing and redefine everything you do according to MY methodology!" Read the first five pages of the "case study" in this book to see the new CIO do EXACTLY THAT. He should have been laughed out of the boardroom.

Event-Driven Architecture: How SOA Enables the Real-Time Enterprise ReviewI had hoped that this book would help me bridge the communications gap between event-driven systems architects like myself and architects that are primarily used to SOA. I also hoped it would help me to work with the our existing SOA infrastructure to realize the benefits of EDA on a wider enterprise level. My hopes were dashed.
The authors fail to inform us how SOA "enables" the "real-time enterprise". In fact they admit that SOA is not the best way to implement event-driven architectures. Worse, they fail to inform us how EDA can even be implemented on a SOA infrastructure.
The real thesis is that EDA is a valuable and overlooked architectural element. It has been overlooked due to the late emphasis on SOA with it's request-reply model. The authors note that many companies probably already have a SOA in place and promise to inform us how we can implement EDA on top of that. But they don't even try to do this.
The most promising chapter in this regard seems to be "The SOA-EDA Connection". But rather than connect anything the author's present yet another mostly evangelistic overview of EDA in the very beginning. It is noted that "Although simple in concept, the realities of bending the raw Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) Web services into a functioning EDA are quite challenging and complex". But no real information is given about how to solve this problem. The authors spend the rest of the chapter discussing how one should design and implement SOA; No mention of EDA or how one is to implement it using an existing SOA infrastructure.

The Definitive Guide to SOA: BEA AquaLogic Service Bus ReviewWhat I like the most about this book is that the book explains more about HOW to use ALSB to create and manage web services than just how to use ALSB which you can learn by reading the documentation.
I had played around with ALSB a few weeks before getting this book but had difficulty understanding some of the concepts and best practices. This book does a great job of explaining both the high-level concepts such as how to map your web services to your internal services/applications and low-level concepts like when to use a pipeline pair instead of a route. Anyone who has, or is, establishing enterprise architectural standards ought to consider this approach to layering assets i.e patterns.
The book introduces a real insight into reuse! I have read "Objects, Components and Frameworks with UML" (The Catalysis Approach) by Desmond D'Souza/Alan Wills and "Software Reuse" by Ivar Jacobson/Martin Griss/Patrik Jonsson. I struggled with both these books to abstract the basic concepts of software reuse. "Patterns for e-business" helped enormously.

What I liked most was that as an IT manager the book leads you through your whole cloud computing project. It provides methods and background information on how to tackle each project step best. There is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm around cloud-based solutions and services as well as the cost-savings and flexibility that they can provide. However, it is not trivial to introduce a fundamentally different service-delivery paradigm into an existing enterprise architecture.This book describes the benefits and challenges of Cloud Computing and then leads the reader through the process of assessing the suitability of a cloud-based approach for a given situation, calculating and justifying the investment that is required to transform the process or application, and then developing a solid design that considers the implementation as well as the ongoing operations and governance required to maintain the solution in a partially outsourced delivery model.

Professional Oracle WebLogic Server (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI am a seasoned Weblogic administrator and trainer. Used the product since version 5.x. This book is a pretty good developer book, but not really a Oracle Weblogic book. The title eludes to being mostly about Weblogic and some about other stuff, but that is not the case at all. I was pretty bummed about the quantity of development topics that are not tied to Weblogic at all.
There are 15 chapters in the text, 9 are almost pure J2EE development, standard Web apps/JMS/EJB/Web Service stuff. The remaining chapters go into Weblogic. I am still baffled as to why we don't discuss a domain until Chapter 12 p547.. I think that is really pretty important to a simple Web App developer looking to get started..

I have read every SOA book available (up until Apr/06) because it's part of my job as a technology research analyst and all-around techno-geek. From those that I have read and studied, this is the only one I feel compelled to write a review about. AND - because I did have to go through it in such detail I'm going to raid my research notes and share with you a detailed review of not just the book, but each of its chapters.
Chapter 1 - Introduction
Nothing special here, this is just a chapter that introduces the rest of the book. Call it a glorified table of contents if you will. At first I felt like skipping it altogether, but then I did what I'm supposed to do for my job and that is read each and every part. In the end, I'm glad I took the time for two reasons: By reading a summary of each of the chapters I got a good feel for what this book was going to cover and what it wasn't going to cover. Secondly, I liked the author's intro stuff about ideal and not so ideal (real) SOA. Kind of insightful and stinging at the same time. Still, though, this is still just a description of other chapters. It's also a chapter you can get for free at the book's web site.
Chapter 2 - Case Studies
Here the author provides background information for the two companies he uses as case studies. If you're into case studies, then you'll definitely want to read through this. But - I found the subsequent samples pretty easy to follow and I think you could get away with skipping this chapter if you really wanted to.
Chapter 3 - Introducing SOA
Here's where I started getting into the meat of the book. If you think you don't understand what soa is or what the industry's made of it or turned it into then you need to read this chapter. It breaks it all down and builds it all up again in a very systematic manner. Make sure you leave this chapter with an understanding of how primitive and contemporary variations of soa are different because the author uses these terms later.
Chapter4 - The Evolution of SOA
Finally someone who makes a distinction between specification and standard and gets it right. This chapter talks about the soa industry and how vendors are responsible for soa but are also causing problems at the same time. How standards organizations are working for soa but also competing at the same time. Pretty interesting stuff and even though this was the least technical chapter, not once was I bored. It ends by comparing Ssoa with older architectures. I especially like how the author differentiates between soa and "traditional" distributed architecture that uses web services. (hint: rpc has a lot to do with it)
Chapter 5 - Web services and primitive soa
I read the author's first soa book last year and this chapter seemed to repeat a few sections from that. But if I remember correctly it goes into more detail and provides case study examples that the first book didn't have. If you're a web services veteran you can probably skip this one.
Chapter 6 -Web Services and Contemporary SOA (Part I: Activity Management and Composition)
Here he goes up a gear and dives right into that scary thing we've been calling ws-* Everything from transactions to context mgmt to orchestration and so on is covered. I really felt the author did a brilliant job building this chapter up by starting with simple meps and building up to activity management and bpel and so on. He really showed how each adds a layer over the other and how all add layers to soa.
Chapter 7 - Web Services and Contemporary SOA (Part II: Advanced Messaging, Metadata, and Security)
Yup, the rollercoast ride continues here as he gets into addressing, reliable messaging, security and other ws-* specs. All of these are specs I had already heard about and I think this type of coverage is appropriate forwhere soa is going. I forgot to mention that in this chapter and 6 he introduces 'in plain english' sections that are hilarious. They are humorous analogies that compare these complex technologies to analogies he writes about a car wash. Good, fresh writing in the usual dull and dry techno world.
Chapter 8 - Principles of Service-Orientation
Essentially a whole bunch of theory about designing services and then eight specific 'principles' (dos and don'ts) about how to design services the right way for soa. I had to go back and reread this chapter after I finished the book. I sort of glanced thru it at first but then found out that later chapters really use these principles. When I went through it again I actually thought this was pretty important stuff. This really is the next oo. You can get this chapter for free at the book web site too.
Chapter 9 - Service Layers
STudy this if you're a application architect or enterprise architect. It shows what you canh do with services built with service-orientation. The diagrams showing different types of layers combined together are pretty cool.
Chapter 10 - SOA Delivery Strategies
If you're a PM you'll love this chapter. It gets into the different phases in a soa project and how you can reorganize them using 'delivery strategies' depending on your budgets and priorities. I'd pay extra close attention to the pros and cons parts where, after documenting these strategies in abstract, the author points out their true colors.
Chapter 11 + 12 - Service-Oriented Analysis I + II
Don't know where to start when it comes to figuring out your services? Well, the author lays it all out here. He provides a process for systemtically breaking down your business logic and divying it up into services. Chapter 12 is like an instruction manual about service model. Being froma web services background this was all new to me.
Chapter 13 - 16 - Service-Oriented Design I, II, III, IV
Roll up your sleeves man, because here is where you get into the real muck of building web services for an soa. There are a bunch of processes that hash out the nitty gritty of wsdl, xsd, and bpel and show you how to build services for the types of layers set up in ch.9. Tons of code and case study samples and tips for design. This is probably the most valuable part of the book for developers and architects.
Chapter 17- Fundamental WS-* Extensions
I forgot tomention that in chapters 6 and 7 no code samples are given. He only covered ws-* specs conceptually. All of the corresponding code is placed in this chapter. A bit inconvenient if you're a developer who wants to see the code while learning about the spec, but not tragic. The neat thing is he ties the code samples into the case studies. This was my first experience with ws-* in real world tyhpe scenarios.
Chapte r18 - SOA Platforms
The author documents j2ee and .net frameworks here first in total abstract and then about how they support the different parts of soa. This was very interesting because it related a lot of the concepts stuff to actual technology and the let you compare different technologies in how they support soa.
I recommend this book to colleagures and clients and I'm recommending it here. If you have questions about SOA then this book probably has the answers you're looking for. I say that because by the time I finished reading it I ran out of questions myself.

Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 Inside Out ReviewI was looking forward to the release of this book having had good success with other MS Inside Out books. The author mostly repeats what is obvious when viewing configuration pages without providing much in the way of additional, anecdotal information that would help explain the various settings.
The section on backups using the stsadm utility is frustrating as the author keeps repeating the location of stsadm for 32 and 64 bit versions, which happen to be located in the same directory for both. I count 14 times within 5 pages using 4 lines each time. I couldn't help but feel he was getting paid by the word and trying to fill the pages.
The book would be most useful as a quick reference guide or if you are considering using WSS 3.0 and want quick facts regarding it's features.

SOA Principles of Service Design ReviewWhere do I start?
On the positive side. It is the only computer book I have read in years that is completely free of typing and grammatical errors.
On the negative:
Thomas Erls' previous book contains lots of valuable information about services. This book does not.
A good design book would have contained more.
Every time he starts to discuss something of depth, it is always beyond the scope of the book, contained in the companion Design Patterns book or in a book that he has yet to write, or he references another chapter containing a paragraph of clarification. The OOAD section is great, but that's not the topic of the book.
You know those articles where the text is great, but the diagrams confusing and innane. Well in this book, the diagrams are inane and so is their description. Take for example, page 327. There is a drawing of a stationary car and a moving car. The text reads "State refers to the general condition of something. A car that is moving is in a state of motion, whereas a car that is not moving is in a stationary state." What enlightenment. Another figure, Figure 8.10 ( I know it well ), is repeated 4 times on two pages, and at various other places, with only changes to the text. I can't help but feeling, that if I read all of the following books that this one promotes, I may get one book's worth of content.
I know that my review differs from the others. I have extensive experience in design ( although not SOA design ), and found most of what was discussed repetetive and obvious. Also I can't help but notice when I look at other reviewers' profiles, they have only ever reviewed one book, or at most two.
I will probably buy, or at least checkout the SOA patterns book ( referenced extensively in this one as published, but lost in book desert ). I hope it contains the content that this book should have contained.

SOA with .NET (The Prentice Hall Service-Oriented Computing Series from Thomas Erl) ReviewThis book is a must have for anyone that wants to know what Microsoft technologies have to offer to accomplish Service Oriented Architecture.
If you are a .Net Enterprise Architect, this book should not leave your side. It covers all the right ways to accomplish distributed application architecture and enterprise integration using .Net technologies.
It is a book for both the beginner and the experienced. It covers SOA fundamentals in the beginning of the book as well as a history of legacy .Net distributed technologies. I enjoyed reading the history chapter. It brought back a lot of memories of COM+ and .NET remoting issues, which made me happy to be be using WCF.
The book does a great job of covering WCF and WCF Extensions. After two chapters on WCF, it then covers .NET Enterprise Services Technologies. They include SQL Server, Windows Workflow, Application Blocks and Software Factories, and Biztalk Server. The book does a great job of showing why, when, and where you would consider using the technologies.
There are several chapters on how to accomplish service orientation. Topics include Service Contracts, Interoperability, Coupling, Abstraction, Discoverability, Reusability and Agnostic Service Models, Service Composition and Orchestration Basics, Orchestration Patterns with Windows Workflow, and Orchestration Patterns with BizTalk Server.
There also several chapters on Infrastructure and Architecture. Topics include Enterprise Service Bus, AppFabric Service Bus, SOA Security, Presentation Layers with .NET, Performance Optimization, and SOA Metrics.
The book ends with several very helpful Appendices. They include an Industry Standards Reference, Service-Orientation Principles Reference, SOA Design Patterns Reference, and the Annotated SOA Manifesto.
I found the coverage of topics in this book to be just at the right level for introducing them, and then showing how they fit into the .NET SOA environment.
I will always have this book with me. It will not leave my side. It contains all the topics I need to consider when doing enterprise architecture. It will serve as a great one stop shop for solutions and ideas.
My only disappointment was that it was in black and white. I own the SOA Design patterns book which is in full color. With the type of diagrams in these books, color does make a big difference in ease of reading and understanding them. It would have been worth paying an extra $10-15 bucks for the book in color.
My other gripe is with Amazon. I had this book in hand for weeks because I ordered from the publisher before Amazon even had it available. Not sure where that went wrong, but it is no ding to the book.
I am counting both of my dings against the publisher and not against the book.
All in all you must buy this book if you are building applications with .NET in an enterprise environment. Even if you are building stand alone applications this book is worth reading. Enterprise System Architectures: Building Client Server and Web Based Systems ReviewThis book is an A to Z compendium of how to design, build, deploy and maintain enterprise-wide architectures. As such it is one of those rare books that should be in every architect's and consultant's short list of resources.
The book is divided into four sections. The first two sections lay the groundwork by providing an overview of network-centric computing solutions, then providing the foundation in the form of architectural frameworks. Section two, in particular, is valuable because the frameworks address both application delivery (development)and service delivery factors that need to be taken into account. I like this holistic approach because production support requirements are addressed early on - something that is lacking from many such books.
Section three covers the design and implementation of an architecture in great detail, with a lot of emphasis on testing, release strategy and infrastructure requirements. Section four is devoted to special topics, such as security, knowledge management and collaborative computing, and data mining. Some highlights of this section include information delivery and "componentware". What I liked most about this section was the in-depth treatment of managing costs of a production client/server environment.
This book has reinforced some of my previous ideas and experience, and has opened my eyes to factors that I had not carefully considered on past projects that involved application or service delivery. I like the coherent and comprehensive approach taken in this book for all aspects of enterprise architectures, and applaud the authors for addressing the hard part: production support of solutions. This book will travel with me to every engagement and will be the first general purpose reference to which I will turn for ideas and methods. Professional Enterprise .NET (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Review
Ok I admit it, I buy too many development books. Most of these I never get around to reading properly. Most of that is my fault. Some of the time I'm put off by dry academic type text that doesn't engage with reader. It must by hard too, right? to produce a book covering topics that are far from exciting whilst still making it enjoyable to read.
So it comes as a pleasant, scratch that, 'fantastic' surprise to read this book that manages to convey a vast amount of information on a broad range of key design patterns and methodologies, like TDD, Inversion of control, Dependency Injection, Entity Frameworks and MVP/MVC and yet still remain a joy to read. I own and have part read books on similar subjects from the most established of authors, the likes of Martin Fowler and Bob Martin. While there is no denying these authors have a wealth of knowledge (having developed many of these patterns and methodologies), it's Professional Enterprise .Net that manages to cut past the waffle and terse examples and provide me with the key information I require.
Highlights for me are the topics on TDD and Refactoring, Inversion of Control and Dependency Injection, Business Logic layer patterns (Active Record & Domain Model patterns) and Data Access Layers including ORM. The examples given lead from the simple solution to the most complete and preferred solution. Each chapter is concise enough to be read through again for reference and is a great book to keep at hand when developing.
Minor quibbles I have are the inclusion of the C# primer in the appendix, I feel this has been used to pad out the book. The book is short for this sort of subject (at around 470ish pages), but I count that as a positive. Also I'd like to see a few more common patterns and practices included and given the same treatment relating to examples are guidance on when to use (maybe we need a 2nd book).

SOA Design Patterns (The Prentice Hall Service-Oriented Computing Series from Thomas Erl) ReviewThis text provides a wonderful and thorough explanation of base SOA principles. The core definitions are concrete, base references well chosen and contains many useful points for consideration. The key topics are covered in a logical structure and approached in logical order. This makes the text much more useful for building a foundation on SOA than its competitors.
However, the text clearly overstates the issues. The use of non-illuminating case studies coupled with needlessly complex re-definition of key terminology makes this reference sheer overkill. This book provides a key example of taking simple concepts and turning them in on themselves to make them appear much more complex than they really are. I am unsure whether this is because of the author's desire to become the biblical reference that Distributed Systems: Principles and Paradigms is or if it is simply because the author wants to make the topic seem more intellectually difficult to grasp than it really is.
I do not want to take away from the value of the content covered, but there are much more succinct and light-hearted publications that will lead you to the same base understanding. It is VERY wordy and over-stated, but it is worth having in your stack of SOA, Web Services, etc. etc. etc. reference stack. If for nothing else, than key citations and consideration points.
Possibly the most value thing I got from this book was the ability to ask additional questions and put key things to consideration that would have otherwise been missed. Sometimes the most obvious things are taken for granted and hence overlooked -- this book touches on that wonderfully.
To summarize: a wonderful book with a thorough examination of core SOA principles, but it breaks the primary principle of "I'm sorry this letter is so long, I didn't have time to make it shorter."
I enjoyed the author's/publisher's other books on the topic, but this one was a bit of a disappointment - perhaps it should have been first on my list instead of close to last. It is important for people to understand that this book does not focus on implementing web services - there are plenty of other books that do that. This book focuses on the hard parts - how to design an architecture around the concept of services.
This book is also not a "cookbook" - it does not offer easy answers to these tough problems. Instead it walks you through the thought process so you can learn how to come up with the right answers yourself.
I am actively using this book to help my customers get started with SOA and to help them avoid common design pitfalls. My favorite chapter is Chapter 9: Using Services to Build Enterprise Solutions. The distinction between today's monolothic applications and tomorrow's composite applications requires a paradigm shift that the authors express well.
