Pro Service-Oriented Smart Clients with .NET 2.0 (Expert's Voice) ReviewI had hopes that this book would be for Pro's since that is what it says it is. It is very high level and uses 2003 samples like Task Vision and Issue Vision. So none of the topics it covers are related to .NET 2.0 except how to upgrade these to work with .NET 2.0. Which means open them up in Studio 2005.
The web service material was also very high level. Nothing on WSE at all. Which makes building web services much easier.
Nothing on Mobile SQL or SQL CE in the disconnected data section.
Nothing on SharePoint and office 12, although not much is available. But office IBF is history.
No real .NET 2.0 coverage at all, none.
The architecture samples used are very very high level. And kind of pointless.
I gave this book a 2, because the material that is in it is good for beginners to get an overview of what smart client and SOA are, but it is useless in the real work and has nothing much to do with .NET 2.0.

Web applications, for example, are easily deployed; you simply copy files to a server and instantly the application is deployed to millions. Windows applications have the advantage of being very responsive but are difficult to deploy because you have to install the application on the end-users machine. The current set of resources doesn't even address what it means to be a "smart" client, much less cover issues like agility, service orientation, testing intelligence, etc. This book, the first covering service orientation with smart clients, offers a unique blend of theory and practical examples. With a comprehensive focus on testing agility in smart clients, the book gives pragmatic case studies to re-enforce theory and also explores the use of smart clients.
