Cloud Computing Architected: Solution Design Handbook ReviewWhile Cloud Computing Explained focused on the what's and why's, Cloud Computing Architected focuses on the nuts and bolts of the how. I really enjoyed Cloud Computing Explained and was not disappointed in this follow-on volume. Cloud Computing Architected is a superbly researched and clearly written volume that succinctly examines each of the major open source and commercial products available to technical architects.
This tome is suitable both for advanced technologists and senior technology leadership, as it really provides a one-stop source for each of the major technologies available today, which is in itself a breathtaking achievement. The authors did a superb job of breaking each of the major areas into a well-organized outline with in-depth coverage of each significant project and product.
Some of my favorite sections include Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine, Windows Azure, Rackspace, Engine Yard, Facebook, Intuit, and Salesforce's Force.com. Other critical areas of coverage include an entire chapter on Authentication, covering such critical infrastructure as OAuth and OpenID, and other chapters on data structuring techniques such as sharding.
Two chapters are devoted to reliability and elasticity, as befits their importance in cloud architecture, and significant coverage is devoted to the CAP theorem as well. An excellent appendix explaining development of a case study cloud aookucatuib and an index round out the book.
All in all, a remarkably complete exploration with detailed implementation notes of the most critical cloud components and an excellent and enjoyable read.
