Microsoft Silverlight 4 For Dummies ReviewI'm totally new to Silverlight and found this a great entry level book, though I would put its technical content above the "dummies" level.
First half is about using Expression Blend, something I hadn't intended to use but now am reconsidering it. Second half was what I wanted most ... Data binding, WCF and RIA Services in Silverlight.
The author uses good examples that help you quickly walk through the process. There were a couple of errors in the text. On page 216 it reads ...
wc.OpenReadCompleted += OpenReadCompleted;
This may work (maybe not) but the better naming convention is used on the next page ...
wc.OpenReadCompleted += wc_OpenReadCompleted;
There were a few other places where what I saw in Visual Studio didn't match his narration nor the screen shots. Maybe that's on Microsoft with changes in the version of Visual Studio and either way, it didn't break anything. I just like it when it matches so I know I did it correctly.
I don't like the author's naming conventions. He suggested putting spaces in the database name, [Silverlight For Dummies]. In tables, he calls the primary key of every table ID and he named the Visual Studio project SilverlightForDummiesWCFDataServices. Try typing that one 3 times fast!
I had trouble with the WCF Data Services and the RIA Services sections. Could be the book was written on specs that changed before the production release, but I couldn't follow the code in these sections too well. Still, it was a good starting point. I now feel ready to launch into a more in-depth book.Microsoft Silverlight 4 For Dummies OverviewThe fun and easy guide for building Silverlight 4 applications!
