Building on SugarCRM ReviewThis "book" looks like it was thrown together by copying some text from various SugarCRM marketing materials and some random code that the author had on his hard drive. In 80 pages he starts from "What is SugarCRM", to a pseudo-manual type of coverage of a couple key GUI pieces and then spends the second half on PHP code examples - which makes any of the 3 pieces completely useless. Not a single one of the questions I had (and for which I bought the book) were addressed, because other than platitudes like "type the label" in the field where it says "label", there was absolutely nothing until you jump into code.
And if you are a developer, then the code example is too long for the few things it addresses, and it's basically all just standard PHP which you really don't need a book on SugarCRM for.
Finally, and most irritating, is that the book starts with a breakdown of the editions (and what features are available in which). Now, the main differences between Community and Commercial editions, according to this section is "Support for Teams", a "Reporting Tool", "Mobile Version" and "Office Plugin".
So off I go into the next few chapters to understand how logic, dependencies and workflows work, which is really what I cared about and couldn't figure out how to get to it in my implementation. After spending a few hours reading, trying to figure out what's wrong with my installation, etc.. I finally saw the ONE TIME mention, in the middle of an unrelated sentence, that these things are only available in the Commercial Editions. Needless to say I run Community and none of it works!
How about mentioning this in the section where he describes the differences between the editions, especially given that the rest of the book is dedicated to it? How about making sure that it's clear that these chapters only apply to commercial, before readers waste their time? Even better, how about making that clear before people buy this piece of junk?
I want my money back for this useless book and for the time and irritation wasted on it.
I have bought many books published by ORA - shame on them for publishing this.
